Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

I'm just scratching my head . . . I mean there's very little difference between that and bangers and mash and beans cooked from scratch this afternoon? Does she think you should be making things more difficult for yourself for the sake of it?

It looks fine. I want it now.

My DH would absolutely LOVE this dinner. Unfortunately DD doesn't like mixed up stuff

She’s very uptight. A lot of people avoid her (me included when it comes to volunteering at the school, it’s not easy to be in her company in close quarters for a few hours).

Kinda hoping she sees this and has some self reflection but she’s probably too busy dusting her skirting boards to lower herself to be on MN.

logstore · 10/09/2026 13:30

Another one about to steal this idea. And modify it for increased laziness by deploying the supermarket frozen mash 😂😂😂

JaelFuryck · 10/09/2026 13:30

How did you stop yourself saying "fuck off no one asked you"

Frankly my kids - and DH - would love this as a quick grab meal on a busy evening. And there isn’t a woman I know - SAH or working - that doesn’t have one night in term time where they fall back on something like this. She’s a judgmental prig LOL

I wouldn’t even call this a “fall back” meal, it’s a perfectly normal family meal.

Just a couple of packs of Aldis own sausages (imagine if I’d told her that 🤣), I cook them in the stainless steel tray in the oven while the potatoes are cooking, chop them up, shove a couple of tins of beans in, top with the mash and then into the oven.

Aside from peeling potatoes (I hate doing that), it’s so quick.

You can make mash with potatoes that have not been peeled, once mashed you don't see or taste the skins.

honeylulu · 10/09/2026 12:29

That looks and sounds lovely!

I might have pulled a face if I saw it but it would be a jealous face because I would want some. Can't believe she was rude enough to judge and tell you so!

She might make everything fresh and from scratch but enjoyment of eating it is probably ruined by the smell of burning martyr.

🤣🤣🤣 burning martyr is exactly right!

Or you could dice them (with the peel on) and roast them in the oven with the sausages - one less pan.

Horrible dinner and to be honest I get the judgement.

A cottage pie would be much better for you and easy to do.

You sound nice Confused

Criteria16 · 10/09/2026 13:38

I had to read lot of comments before getting a vague understanding of her point! SO very ridiculous to be even funny to be honest. I consider myself to have quite good standards, I cook from scratch, avoid PCFU and yada yada....but a nutritious home made pie made in the morning is actually a really good idea to feed people in the evening, given they will eat at different times! What's wrong with it? It will not go bad as it's actually been made only few hours before! It's home made. It has lot of nutrients. What is the issue here?? Mad lady!

Thatsillymama · 10/09/2026 13:39

Simple dinners are the absolute best. My childhood fave was sausage, mash and beans with cheese and a fried egg on top. Unreal 😋

MsLllama · 10/09/2026 13:42

Cheeky Bitch is probably on here recognising that picture😂,loooks yummy btw.

wandererofthekingdom · 10/09/2026 13:42

It's a classic which I would have also used frozen mash for in the interests of ease!!

Iwilladmit · 10/09/2026 13:49

Helpmyarse · 10/09/2026 12:20

Oh dh and ds will both definitely be cracking out the bisto this evening!

My 6 year old is incapable of eating anything without a side of peas, so I shall go to the garden later and loving handpick some from my well tended garden, that I have all day, eveyday to look after I will microwave her a bowl of frozen peas.

Can I microwave frozen peas?! You have probably just doubled my veg intake.

how long? Water? Covered?

croisette · 10/09/2026 13:49

She was definitely very rude to comment. But that isn’t something we would eat in my family. The mixing up of the three gives me the horrors and I eat most things !

pbwriter · 10/09/2026 13:49

Given me the answer for a tea next week for the teen! Thanks!

Yes, but would you say so to someone's face?

Who's to say that the OP doesn't make cottage pie too? Nutritionally not that much difference, anyway.

Kadiofakit · 10/09/2026 13:52

See this is my kind of meal and I am not that keen on beans on their own but that combo is absolutely delicious! My Mil taught me it as I am a forriner and wouldn't have thought of it myself 😁My DH loves it too but unfortunately my kids don't like beans, weirdos

I had those types of mums in primary so can totally sympathise

bookmarket · 10/09/2026 13:52

She was downright rude to make such comments about your dinner and how you are all going to eat separately. Unless you are very close friends and used to being jokingly honest with each other.

Does she have secondary aged dc yet?

Monvelo · 10/09/2026 13:55

Looks great! Apart from one kid won't eat beans or mash and the other won't eat sausages or mash 🤦🏻‍♀️

BCBird · 10/09/2026 13:55

It is not something I would particularly relish, but i have manners so would not react

PallidSausage · 10/09/2026 13:56

Dear @BillieWiper ,

Thank you for my new username. Your phrasing made me laugh.

Love, Pallid x

NoisyMonster678 · 10/09/2026 13:57

The fool who you had this issue with has an attitude problem.

She is ignorant and if she comes to your house in future, even if it is raining, she should be told to wait at the front door, so she can't interfere because she can't be trusted not fire her mouth off.

Oh and your family meal is excellent.
