Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Frankly my kids - and DH - would love this as a quick grab meal on a busy evening. And there isn’t a woman I know - SAH or working - that doesn’t have one night in term time where they fall back on something like this. She’s a judgmental prig LOL

There's nothing wrong with the dinner as you well know, but I am amazed you stood there and let her speak to you like that, and you think it's funny. And it sounds like whatever she said about you or your home etc would be acceptable. I must be missing something!

The only ones to eat pale sausages, are dogs. That's because they eat any and all sausages.

She would be disgusted with me. I am a SAH wife - no children at home now. I did a pasta bake last week - cooked the mince and pasta in the morning. Put it together and left it in the fridge and placed it in the oven in time for DH to come in from work. Does it really matter when you prepare it!

I do a similar thing with cheesy mash and sausages but put the sausages on top because DH and I like different sausages and we need to be able to tell which are which.

Awesome. Not lazy at all then! I'd just cook them in tray in oven with a couple onions or something and then maybe serve boiled potatoes on the side. I'd not bother even opening the tin of beans for the others! But I'd leave them in a pan if I ate first. I'm sure it's lovely your one anyway!! X

I hate cooking with a passion but that sounds grim, especially after it's been reheated.

I wasn't hungry yesterday so I was naughty and got this new packet pasta thing from Lidl it took 2 mins into the microwave 🤣🤣🤣 only for me thou !!!

Oh dh and ds will both definitely be cracking out the bisto this evening!

My 6 year old is incapable of eating anything without a side of peas, so I shall go to the garden later and loving handpick some from my well tended garden, that I have all day, eveyday to look after I will microwave her a bowl of frozen peas.

I would of booted her out of the front door.

I’ve known her for years and feel a bit sorry for her sometimes. She’s just one of those people who is always like this. There is always usually a reason.

I prefer just to smile and show a bit of compassion. You never know what has gone on in someone’s life. I had another friend once like this but she had grown up in extreme poverty and neglect, so she always had to go above and beyond for her own children and would harshly judge anyone that didn’t. But I went to school with her and I knew how horrific her childhood had been.

So sometimes, people have reasons for behaviour. Other times, they are just complete dickheads, but you never know.

It’s actually okay. You’d think it would go a bit dry, but enough beans and cheese and it reheats pretty well.

I thought the same. It seems so unbelievable, that someone should go on like that. Fair enough if she does not want to give something like that to her own children. I fail to see what the fuss is about, it is just sausages, beans, and mash, at the end of the day.

I was born in the '50's but wouldn't say those thingsbor pull faces.

I used to layer potatoes beans, sausages, potatoes cheese in the 70's. Usually I was looking for inexpensive meals to make.

I might have pulled a face if I saw it but it would be a jealous face because I would want some. Can't believe she was rude enough to judge and tell you so!

She might make everything fresh and from scratch but enjoyment of eating it is probably ruined by the smell of burning martyr.

I love these sorts of OPs when the OP is obviously not wrong, some other person is very obviously being unreasonable, and the OP is just so chilled/cool/just-a-bit-chaotic - i mean what other kind of response is there to this post?! If someone does show up commenting about oooooh it aint organic/there isn't X or Y in it the only person that looks stupid is the person making the comment!

She'd be horrified to know that I make a lasagna an entire 24 hours before it is due to be eaten for dinner 😂

I have a bean refuser so while that is an absolutely fine tea, I can't do it.

OP what other reheat able wonders do you make? I need ideas.
