Lighthearted one for you - I’ve offended someone with my dinner for this evening

A fellow school mum popped in to drop some things off for me to take up to the school (I volunteer Thursday afternoon).

While she was here, I got tonight’s dinner out of the oven. I always make something in a tray on Thursdays as it’s a busy day for everyone (me, dh, ds 23, dd 13 and dd 6). It’s a cluster fuck of afterschool clubs, dh working from the office, ds on a late shift. So it just makes sense to have something in a tray that everyone can help themselves to and eat at different times; it’s only me and the 6 year old here at our usual dinner time on a Thursday.

Today I made sausage and bean pie. Sausages cut up, mixed with beans, cheesy mash on top. Easier than sausage, mash and beans kept separately IMO, when people are grabbing dinner.

Lazy bitch, aren’t I? Stay at home mum as well, I should be standing in the kitchen whipping up a three course meal whenever anyone wants to eat.

Anyway, I got it out the oven and you should have seen her face. Appalled that I would feed my family cut up beans and sausages and that were weren’t all going to sit around the table to a freshly prepared meal (we would all have to wait until about 9pm on a Thursday to eat together at the table, sod that).

She would never feed her family this meal. I did ask, would she feed them sausage and mash. Yes, she said. So I asked what the difference was. “This isn’t fresh! You don’t work, you could have made it this evening.” okay, crazy lady.

Anyway, lighthearted as she’s a silly cow, but here’s a photo of the offending dinner that horrified her.

Imagine commenting on someone’s dinner prep 🤣 what a sad life.

I have only one thing to say...

The potatoes should be sliced!

(This a family favourite here)

Ladybirdflyawayhome · 10/09/2026 11:50

I too was a sahm and I’ve got a theory about women like this. She is envious and would love to be able to give one pot/pie dishes to her family also.

AlwaysExtraHot · 10/09/2026 11:51

i'd inhale that, it looks delicious.
She needs a life.

What kind of sausages and do you precook them before you mix them with the beans? Because you've just given me an idea for tea tonight.

What a vile piece of sh*t. Her that is. I would have thrown her out the door.

Franpie · 10/09/2026 11:52

That is DH’s favourite meal! It reminds him of his childhood. Me and the kids hate it and always sort ourselves out when he makes it (I was as shocked as your friend I think the first time he made it!) but he doesn’t mind as there more for him.

KidsAndDogsGalore · 10/09/2026 11:52

That's a hell of a lot more effort than my go to quick fix dinner!

(I am talking 1x bag of frozen veg, 1-2x can of chickpeas- or lentils or any other beans, pot of curry paste, coconut milk powder & veggie stock. All chucked into the slow cooker in the morning! It's surprisingly delicious!)

BleedinglyObvious · 10/09/2026 11:53

I hope you grew the potatoes yourself and dug them up this morning, made your own baked beans from home-grown haricots and tomatoes, made the cheese or bought it from an artisanal cheesemonger, and made the bangers from scratch.
And serving it with a large home-grown organic salad.

If not, you are a slattern

MyShrivelledGnarlyFinger · 10/09/2026 11:55

Does this PTA lady make lemon drizzle cake?

BillieWiper · 10/09/2026 11:56

It does depend on if you browned off the sausages first. I can't be doing with a pallid sausage!

But her argument seems to be that it's not fresh. So a lasagne, a shepherd's pie, a tuna pasta bake, a beef bourginion (soz sp?) would all meet the same horrified reaction?

Seems ridiculous. Has she never ever eaten leftovers? That's all it is, very recent leftovers. Does she not know how to operate a microwave?

intothedark · 10/09/2026 11:57

omg i'm glad she doesn't see my version as I use frozen mash

Traitorsclaudia · 10/09/2026 11:58

This sounds incredible. Going to make it for dinner one night next week.

Lentilcakes · 10/09/2026 12:00

Looks like a normal dinner to me!! How rude of the woman.
I sometimes dinner early as if I’m getting home at 6pm u know I won’t be faced to cook then.

almondflake · 10/09/2026 12:00

My dad used to make that for tea years ago when I was at school (I’m 62 now) . It was my favourite tea ever.
she’s just being judgy , it’s a great tea and so easy when everyone is busy . Shame she didn’t come round when you were making your 13 course tasting banquet lol 😂
I have to make teas like this as my husband’s self employed and he never knows what time he’s going to be home so at least he gets a nice meal when he comes in that he doesn’t have to cook himself .

Picklelily99 · 10/09/2026 12:00

Never had it. Need to make it!!!

Soontobe60 · 10/09/2026 12:01

Love cheesy mash and bean pie!! Never thought to put sausages in it, but will do now!!
PS I buy sausages when they’re on offer and cooks them all at once then freeze them in portions. Makes for a quick sausage butty breakfast or just with beans and a fried egg.

cantthinkofagoodusername2026 · 10/09/2026 12:03

Probably the only criticism my DCs would have is that there isn’t enough cheese (never enough cheese)! It looks amazing

Soontobe60 · 10/09/2026 12:04

Helpmyarse · 10/09/2026 11:42

I must say, part of me was expecting someone on here to say, “where’s the veg?”

(It’s in the cupboard, mate. You are welcome to come round, chop it up and boil it. I can’t be arsed today).

I’d have it with frozen peas. DH would leave the peas. We’d both have gravy- using Bisto granules

Sounds a complete melt. Your dinner looks lovely.

My mum used to cook stew in the morning and serve it for dinner. And the rest of it the next night. Maintained it tasted better (it did) and I think I heard Nigella Lawson also say this, so you can tell your snooty mate that.

My own ma did the same. She worked FT so would make a pan of Scouse on Sunday whilst she was making the roast dinner and that would be Monday's tea. It really is so much better when it's a day old and the same is true for curries, chilli, bol etc.

LuluLemons · 10/09/2026 12:08

That sounds delicious… you’ve given me a dinner idea 🤣🤣

LondonLass2026 · 10/09/2026 12:08

Looks lovely, op. I'd love to tuck into that!

There's always going to be the ones like her, looking down their nose. She is certainly not a jot better than you, so ignore her.

TorroFerney · 10/09/2026 12:09

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 10/09/2026 11:11

Did you not just tell to learn some manners or fuck off? That's certainly what I'd have done if someone was standing over me in my own home critiquing a meal I'd made that was none of their business.

Agreed. I’d be saying luckily for me “insert name” my self worth isn’t linked to my cooking or my ability to clean a toilet better than anyone else.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 10/09/2026 12:09

My husband would be delighted if I made that! I might make as a treat for him😂. I love to get ahead by doing things like this.

Oh I don’t like a pale sausage either.

I fully cook them in the oven first, then chop them up.

I could so devour that delicious looking creation right now, you lazy bitch 😂😘
