Should I worry that my 13-year-old has no particular accomplishments?

My 13 yo dc is not accomplished. Is ok but not great at school. Does not play any musical instruments (gave them all up in primary), has no hobbies apart from playing video games and hanging out with his friends. Doesn’t have much drive.

he’s a really nice person. Gentle, funny, kind, thoughtful, a good friend. But I feel like I’ve let him down by not getting him to be accomplished in some ways.

Is it too late? Is there anything I can do? Or should I just appreciate that he seems happy and let him get on with it?

Having caught up on the thread, I think I might revise my earlier comment. I wasn’t brilliant at anything at his age. But I did have interests and hobbies. None of which I was brilliant at but I got enjoyment from them and still do with some of them. That’s actually important. They need to know it’s actually ok to not be Mozart to like composing music. Being average isn’t a bad thing. It’s fine.

Thank you so much to everyone for these comments.

ds does have friends, enjoys socialising and planning trips together, and he likes cycling but he has fallen off the radar of all his primary hobbies - he either didn’t like them (musical instruments) or he aged out of all the clubs that do things for fun instead of competitively (there are no 11+ football clubs near us that aren’t insanely competitive, for example). so he is not only gaming alone, although I would rather he did less of that if I’m honest.

what I have learnt from this thread is to recognise him for the wonderful person he is, and to gently encourage his interests as and when they develop. I will look into cadets too.

i do worry that I’m a bad parent/ bad example but I will keep that to myself and avoid projecting my own insecurities. I actually have lots of hobbies (although I’m not ‘good’ at any of them). Ds is not interested in coming with me, perhaps it’s an age thing as he used to come along.

He sounds great. Please don’t do that.
