What did your parents say when you asked what’s for dinner?

Inspired by the thread about words used in different areas of the UK,
what was the stock answer to ‘What’s for dinner?’ in your house?
In our house it was “Ham, jam and baa lamb”. In my friend’s house it was “Shite with sugar on top”.

I'd have been stirring the pot or washing vegetables so would have already known!

My step dad’s mother apparently used to say cow’s cock and cauliflower.

My mum used to say .. snot and bogey pie …

I'm not saying it was, I'm just saying I find it gross and unfunny and mean. My parents would never have said anything like that I feel sorry for those whose parents did.

Ok. The way you said it sounded quite judgemental of the posters recounting what was said, rather than of the parents themselves.

We were always told what we were having, but if we ever asked how much longer it would be, we’d get “how long’s a piece of string?’.

I do not know about other posters, but mine was always said with a smile in the voice, as a mildly funny saying. Just in the same sort of way she might say “yeah, and pigs might fly” to a politician pontificating on the radio or whatever.
