Thanks for the new thread @Spandauer

We've had biblical rain here for at least four days now, with thunder and lightning thrown in for good measure. Eyeing up the bits of wood lying around at the end of the garden. I have nails aplenty an two hammers.

Spandauer · 31/08/2026 09:35

Nah! You just need a few rolls of paper towel thrown at you.

2017... seems like the good old days.

I would still put $1 that come 2029 we still have Trump, or his heir (not necessarily biological - remember how the US fetishised the Romans) having decided that an election with 100% for him is a waste of time.

I agree. Depressing as that is.

JadeHare · 31/08/2026 10:34

Some of the counter videos of Donny placing his Lake of America sign on Lake Ontario in the HuffPost are quite funny.

logicisall · 31/08/2026 11:54

Thanks for the new thread on an increasingly delusional POTUS and the crazy shit going on around him.

I can't help feeling that on his usual form, he'd be entirely likely to put them up by the wrong lake.

Difficult to tell really. I have not seen any full on pro Trump posts in ages. But there does appear to be a change of method, or at least I think there is. The incognito smash and grab post.

You know, where a new user name appears in a thread, smashes a few insults in, then vanishes. Are these long term Trumpers ? Could be. But I don't do the post history checking stuff. I prefer to take each post as it is.

I just see one regular poster who appears to believe what Trump says. But that poster claims to dislike him. I think that is maybe ideological overlapping circles on a venn diagram rather than full on in his club.

I get the impression that pro Trumpers are a bit embarrassed now to admit they are pro Trump. But maybe that is wishful thinking.

@Spandauer . Thanks for new thread :-)

I get the impression that pro Trumpers are a bit embarrassed now to admit they are pro Trump. But maybe that is wishful thinking.

You know, I don't think it necessarily is. His rating are in the toilet, people are feeling the pinch as far as CoL, and he's making increasingly incoherent pronouncements.

You certainly don't see the billboards, yard signs, and 'Trump trucks' around as much these days, at least not in my neck of the woods. It may be different in the Deep South, parts of the upper MidWest, and the rest of his 'traditional' fan base. Embarrassed? I don't know if it's that or just caution. Just as those of us who supported Dem candidates and/or social causes used to keep a low profile for fear of getting our cars keyed or being confronted by aggressive bigmouths, now it's their turn to cower in the face of 'disapproval' and worry about confrontation. I guess what goes around does come around.

Right now I'm so sick at the possible 'sell off' of parts of Yosemite that I can't think straight. I consider it my 'home park' since it's just a few hours drive and the idea of such desecration is anathema to me.

@Spandauer Thanks for the new thread. Dolly would be plumb proud to have her lyrics used on our thread.

The Defense Department was forced on Monday to deny the U.S. had struck Iran’s main petroleum export facility after President Donald Trump posted a fake but very realistic AI-generated video showing a purported attack by American forces.
The video, posted to the president’s Truth Social account, appears to show oil storage tanks and refineries erupting in flames from the perspective of someone filming from inside a helicopter above the carnage, with an accompanying message describing the scene as “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens” and signed as “President DJT.”
But a U.S. official said no such attack had taken place, with Kharg Island not being among the locations targeted overnight in what has been the first exchange of fire between American and Iranian forces in weeks.'

Vance, ever the pseudospin doctor, said "U.S. President Donald Trump was sending a message to Iran with his social media post about Iran's energy hub of Kharg Island being blown to smithereens. The president likes to switch it up on social media a little bit. He would be the first to say he doesn't make announcements about military actions on social media (italics mine 😂), but I think that he's sending a message to the Iranians.

Unclear whether the orange one mistook Larak Island for Kharg Island (both have a k?) or whether he's playing 4D chess as Vance suggests. The Iranians struck back at Jordan. I knew they'd done something before reading the news as gas prices went from 1.98 to 2.12/l overnight.

And thank you for the new thread, @Spandauer 🍻

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom just wanted to say I was so sorry to see the news of the ferry sinking off Cyprus.

I'm sure the whole island is in shock.Flowers

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 31/08/2026 19:19

Thank you for your kind thoughts, @PerkingFaintly. The weather on Saturday was dramatic for Cyprus and I'm presuming the seas must have still been rough in the aftermath. Terribly sad loss of life.

Justsaynonow · 31/08/2026 19:57

Proud of my country - still don't understand the ones choosing to travel to the US. Think they're the ones that don't "do" politics 🙄

"Millions of the politest people on Earth, a nation that apologises to furniture when they accidentally bump into it, have sat down at their own kitchen tables, one household at a time, and concluded that the cunt next door who keeps calling their country the fifty-first state can get stuffed, and if that doesn’t translate, get fucked, and if that still doesn’t translate, they’ll happily wait while he gets booted the fuck out." (another masterpiece from IFLA)

Brilliant article. Not all Canadians travelling don’t do politics. I have a Canadian cousin who may have visited my uncle in California once or maybe twice. Uncle won’t be able to travel now. Definitely travelling despite Trump and not just for a holiday like they did in the past, but would show up in the statistics.

Establishing the United States Space Academy

A proclamation from the fella who seems to lack awareness of anything.

Hey. That is totally harmless though is it not ? I suppose there is an issue for Republicans on an ideological level. You know, free market, small government, controlled spending and all that. But apart from that, it's good innit ?

Well no. And I am just going by what the proclamation says. I have not seen any articles in the "space press". But I would bet there will be loads. This blurb from the first paragraph.

"To continue to lead the world in space exploration and technology, while securing and defending our national interests in space, the Nation must prepare the next generation of astronauts, scientists, engineers, operators, entrepreneurs, civil servants, and warfighters and ensure that they are capable of advancing American interests in space. Achieving this goal requires us to recruit, train, and retain America’s best and brightest from across the Nation."

" warfighters". Oh. Lets see what else . So there is a commission first, with -

"(b) In addition to the Chair, Vice Chairs, and Executive Director, the Commission shall include the following officials or their designees:

(i) the Secretary of War;
......
(v) the Secretary of the Air Force; and..."

And this commission will

"Sec. 3. Duties. (a) The Commission shall advise and assist the President regarding proposals to establish the United States Space Academy (Space Academy), a proposed NASA-led Federal academy dedicated to combining rigorous technical education with leadership development, discipline, and a durable commitment to public service. The Space Academy will develop a professional corps of civically grounded leaders prepared to advance American interests within the space domain."

Ahh. "civically grounded leaders". I looked up the word " civically" in case it means peaceful. And it don't.

And looking through this,

"(v) the process for selection of the permanent physical location of the Space Academy appropriate for the chosen governance framework;"

It is a physical school he wants. No mention of it's name. But we can guess.

All harmless though, right ? Expensive perhaps, but harmless. Well no. Because of this

International Space Law Explained | United Nations

And from that UN treaty -

"At the height of the Cold War, following the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, countries recognized the need for a global legal framework to address the unique challenges and opportunities of space exploration, aiming to ensure "the use of outer space for peaceful purposes." The framework states that space exploration should benefit all people and emphasizes international cooperation in the security of outer space."

There we go then. This whole thing of "the use of outer space for peaceful purposes." . That's out the window then.

Are they not supposed to pretend it's for peaceful purposes ?

RT @realDonaldTrumpThe only reason that communities throughout the U.S.A. should not want Data Centers is if they want to end up being backwards and poor. If they want to be successful and rich, with far lower taxes and jobs all over the place, let Data Reign. The good news is that there are plenty of other places that want them. If we kill the Golden Goose, you will only have yourselves to blame. China could not be happier with this anti Data Center movement. Actually, they can't believe it is happening! President DJT

Wot he say ?

"backwards and poor."

Looks like Nats did not do her homework on this one. Resistance against data centers is not Dem v Repug it seems. I am talking AI data centers here. Trump missed that by the looks of it.

I can't post a link to any polls unfortunately, because where I am opposition to anything the guv want to do is really not allowed, but it seems from site headers, that opposition is across the board. The dems cos of environment, the repugs... cos they are repugs. The dems were more in opposition, but that has changed apparently. Now even.

Personally I am not against them, if they use renewables that is. The whole AI bubble/vapourware thing. I am firmly planted on the fence.

But yeah. Trump just called a large part of his base "backwards and poor.".

JadeHare · 01/09/2026 09:31

So after 10 months of bobbing about in the deep, blue sea, the first port of call for the USS Abraham Lincoln will be in Pattaya, Thailand.
I know I am an absolutely horrible person for letting this cross my mind, but can’t help but think some of those service wives might be getting more than a novelty tourist Buddha when those seamen (🫢) return.

FortnamsTea · 01/09/2026 10:09
