Presidential proclamations have been around forever. George Washington issued the first one on October 3, 1789, designating Thursday, November 26, 1789 a national day of public thanksgiving and prayer for the ratification of the Constitution and the establishment of a government to protect religious and civil liberties.

In the case of the Canadian liquor ban, official Proclamations regarding foreign trade and commerce have the same legal weight as statutory law Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 (codified under 19 U.S.C. § 1338). So, I guess as of 29 Sep no Canadian wine for me.

Proclamations are also used for 'ceremonial' purposes such as lowering the flag to half-staff, naming special/commemorative 'Days', and honouring notable personages. That type does not carry the force of law.

Thank you, @AcrossthePond55, I learn something new every day Grin I'd never have guessed, as a proclamation sounds so regal to me (or like something out of a fairy-tale, truth be told! Oyez, oyez!)

walllaw · 09/09/2026 16:51

It's not discussed enough that George Washington was the first person to use the phrase, Thank YOU for your ATTENTION to This Matter.

In our house, which contains a retired aeronautical engineer who is particularly interested in aircraft accident investigations, we are amazed to have found a competent Trump appointee who was originally proposed by Trump, confirmed by Biden and re-confirmed by Trump. I give you Jennifer Homendy, NTSB Chair, who I am reliably informed is currently doing an excellent job.

(Wait, what, a female Democrat in charge?)

I would imagine they've just forgotten she's there and now that they've been reminded she'll be fired as an affirmative action hire and be replaced by someone who'll be confirmed on his merits.

Or they don't have a donor who has asked for it.

Merits = being a Friend of Epstein?

Merits = being a Friend of Epstein?

That's not the only qualification, but it's up there

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/09/2026 18:58

This is one of those many days when I have to refrain from sitting here, typing "arsehole" over and over again, like when I was in detention in the Upper Third (yeah, no, arsehole wasn't a word we used then, particularly not when in detention in a convent school).

Llttledrummergirl · 09/09/2026 19:17

Yeah, I'm managing to not type fuck off you half wit, but it's taking real restraint.

It's like a quarter of the country has gone temporarily insane- since when do civilsed peaple support men in masks in groups threatening people.

It's like some weird take on Stephen King's Needful things, just needs a tinder to set it off.

Who do we think is pulling the strings on this one?

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/09/2026 19:33

Who do we think is pulling the strings on this one?

If there is a God, it's definitely not them, @Llttledrummergirl.

Llttledrummergirl · 09/09/2026 19:35

I was thinking Putin or Musk. A number of threads seem to lead that way when pulled.

Thanks for clarifying. Good to know I was half right!

So, today is the day of the first (and hopefully last) Republican National Midterm platform for Scrotus to spout more lies and insanity Convention. For those of you not in the US, this is not something that is 'usual'. National Conventions are normally only done for presidential elections. My feeling is that the GOP is either really running scared of losing the House or Senate so they're trying to gin up the vote OR no candidate wants Scrotus to speak at their own campaign events so they're giving him ONE bully pulpit to spout his nonsense from and hope it's enough to keep him away from their own rallies. Or both.

Yes. I see what you're saying, but to what end? World Domination? Could that really happen? I'm flummoxed. (Genuinely, sorry if I'm being argumentative.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/09/2026 20:33

I think that with Musk at least the answer to "to what end?" may actually be "habit". No particular end in view but that sort of behaviour has simply become habitual.

In Putin's case, of course, it may just be a fervent desire not to end his life strung from a lamp-post by his own guards because they are fed up to the back teeth with the way he carries on. Anything that makes him look better than he is would be desirable if fear is his driver.

In Russia's case they are escalating the shenanigans and generally annoying behaviour because that's all they have left to do. They would love to have swept through Ukraine in three days and have the rest of Europe cowering before the Russian might. But that didn't work. The only revenge open to them for the UKs support of Ukraine is the tedious stuff- cyber attacks, trying to stir up discontent as much as possible etc so that's what they are doing. I'm not saying it's Russia in this case. But when it is Russia that's why.

Unless you have lived here for a long time, it's impossible to truly grasp the insular nature of the British mind.

Are we all watching the financial markets closely enough yet?

Bigly issues incoming.

Don't forget to add What a F in front of arsehole. I say it frequently. I went to the dentist this morning where I had to close my eyes to not see the news on the tv above me because I'm so annoyed about the US messaging around Canada for once not giving in (and as an aside WHY do they do that?? If I need distraction, maybe a video of mountain meadows, not news and commercials))

Did you see the cost to attend Trump-a-palooza?😱 Wonder who keeps the $$ (not really, I can guess).

'The convention is being used by Trump and the RNC to raise millions of dollars of political contributions, including by charging $250,000 per person for attendance at a round table with Trump and $65,000 for a photo opportunity with the president. The Hill reported that incumbent Republican legislators have been asked to pay $25,000 for the opportunity to attend (eta but more for all the events).Ticket prices have varied among state parties. Alabama's tickets to the convention are being sold at a reported price range of between $1,300 to $1,500; while California is selling some of its tickets at the "golden VIP member" price of $250,000.The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) reportedly distributed more than 2,000 tickets.'

Why? I was responding to someone asking about why would Russia be potentially targeting the UK. I didn't say they were only targeting the UK or that everything that went wrong with the UK was Russia's fault. But in the context of things like the recent protests and Musk/Putin potentially helping to stir up existing tensions and why they would be interested that's why rather than any realistic ambitions for Russian world domination at this point.

I did wonder. Because these National conventions are where the delegates pick/ announce their Presidential candidate. But it's there are no national candidates to pick.

It's really just a bit of cosplay.

Oil up, worldwide markets down and US support the Yen. What are you expecting?

Oil. Looks like there's a massive issue with supply and demand due to Iran - look at tankers and refinery capacity. Iran is targeting US allies and suppliers.
Gas. Similar to the above.
Suggests there's about to be a shock to the market globally. Massive implications.
I fear it could get worse than we might be realising at this stage. It's not going to go down well with the US public that's for sure. But it could be even worse than simply price - it could spark panic buying and/or rationing here too. I'm hoping the situation isn't as bad as this, but Im looking at this questioning the numbers here.

I'm not even considering wheat prices (and dependency of imports to certain volatile middle east and North African countries) nor lack of fertiliser issues which also feed into market volatility.

Nor am I going to touch too much on how both Ukraine and Russia actively targeting energy sources and warehousing. (Warehousing is the big logistics target of the drone war era - with this being a vulnerability domestically too).

Japan in trying to stabilise the Yen is pretty much in direct conflict with the dollar. This has not gone down well in the US. China is also putting pressure on the dollar by getting rid of us bond debt and buying oil. Collision course incoming.

Lots of chatter is about a market crash being imminent. I don't know if that will happen but there's lots of people wanting to speculate on what happens next and there's multiple governments intervening in the markets. The violatility here is troubling me in terms of what the outcome will eventually be.

The UK is exposed here due to our debt. If we can't finance our debt, we have to go begging to someone who can along with the terms and conditions that go with this. (Think about this and who has the power to enable this).

I'm getting the same vibes I got in 2007 and again in early 2020 in terms of something being off and up and something about to materialise.

I am worried an economic issue which Trump loses control of could push him into a corner and do something drastic. Equally I am worried about how it could also hand more power to Trump too. Not just in terms of money. Crises mean opportunities. There may be incentive to create a financial crisis in certain scenarios too.

I am watching how this develops but I don't think enough people are paying close enough attention to these forces. The missiles are almost distracting from the money and oil. I can see a wall of reality moment about to materialise soon.

It's making me nervous. I am not so nervous about the missiles flying around themselves (at this point at least) but I'm concerned about what the implications are of what the missiles are hitting.

So I'm not sure where this is headed fully just yet. Many options still, of various levels of shitness. But forces are coming together at the same time at a rapid rate and that I think we have a significant key point coming into focus that will bring huge consequences around the world. Forget anything Burnham says or does on the economy before this point - we are passengers to this.

None of which are likely to be good for ordinary people.

Yes, I'm nervy.
