Oil. Looks like there's a massive issue with supply and demand due to Iran - look at tankers and refinery capacity. Iran is targeting US allies and suppliers.
Gas. Similar to the above.
Suggests there's about to be a shock to the market globally. Massive implications.
I fear it could get worse than we might be realising at this stage. It's not going to go down well with the US public that's for sure. But it could be even worse than simply price - it could spark panic buying and/or rationing here too. I'm hoping the situation isn't as bad as this, but Im looking at this questioning the numbers here.

I'm not even considering wheat prices (and dependency of imports to certain volatile middle east and North African countries) nor lack of fertiliser issues which also feed into market volatility.

Nor am I going to touch too much on how both Ukraine and Russia actively targeting energy sources and warehousing. (Warehousing is the big logistics target of the drone war era - with this being a vulnerability domestically too).

Japan in trying to stabilise the Yen is pretty much in direct conflict with the dollar. This has not gone down well in the US. China is also putting pressure on the dollar by getting rid of us bond debt and buying oil. Collision course incoming.

Lots of chatter is about a market crash being imminent. I don't know if that will happen but there's lots of people wanting to speculate on what happens next and there's multiple governments intervening in the markets. The violatility here is troubling me in terms of what the outcome will eventually be.

The UK is exposed here due to our debt. If we can't finance our debt, we have to go begging to someone who can along with the terms and conditions that go with this. (Think about this and who has the power to enable this).

I'm getting the same vibes I got in 2007 and again in early 2020 in terms of something being off and up and something about to materialise.

I am worried an economic issue which Trump loses control of could push him into a corner and do something drastic. Equally I am worried about how it could also hand more power to Trump too. Not just in terms of money. Crises mean opportunities. There may be incentive to create a financial crisis in certain scenarios too.

I am watching how this develops but I don't think enough people are paying close enough attention to these forces. The missiles are almost distracting from the money and oil. I can see a wall of reality moment about to materialise soon.

It's making me nervous. I am not so nervous about the missiles flying around themselves (at this point at least) but I'm concerned about what the implications are of what the missiles are hitting.

So I'm not sure where this is headed fully just yet. Many options still, of various levels of shitness. But forces are coming together at the same time at a rapid rate and that I think we have a significant key point coming into focus that will bring huge consequences around the world. Forget anything Burnham says or does on the economy before this point - we are passengers to this.

None of which are likely to be good for ordinary people.

Yes, I'm nervy.

No problems at all according to Trump.

He says the Iran war will be over immediately after the midterms, and that Iran are already finished but are just hanging on for these elections. He says oil will drop quick to $3 for gas, probably $2 even.

Quote " China is also putting pressure on the dollar by getting rid of us bond debt and buying oil."

Where are China buying this oil ? The issue is the Iran war when it comes to oil. And if China are selling US Bonds, then someone is buying them.

You missed mentioning helium supplies.

On "something big" happening. We have discussed here about some countries moving their gold out of the US.... for some reason. I think we concluded that Trump plans to " take it", or " liberate it", to gold plate his ballroom.

Did you see the cost to attend Trump-a-palooza?😱 Wonder who keeps the $$ (not really, I can guess).

'The convention is being used by Trump and the RNC to raise millions of dollars of political contributions, including by charging $250,000 per person for attendance at a round table with Trump and $65,000 for a photo opportunity with the president. The Hill reported that incumbent Republican legislators have been asked to pay $25,000 for the opportunity to attend (eta but more for all the events).Ticket prices have varied among state parties. Alabama's tickets to the convention are being sold at a reported price range of between $1,300 to $1,500; while California is selling some of its tickets at the "golden VIP member" price of $250,000.The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) reportedly distributed more than 2,000 tickets.'

Edited

I had no idea! I really haven't paid attention or read much about it to tell the truth. Anyone who pays that price has shit for brains. I do wonder how much of the MAGA faithful will be let in at no cost just to fill the seats and scream. I can't imagine there are enough rich fucks paying those prices to fill whatever venue they're using. Probably going to be another one of those events where cameras are strategically placed and do tight shots so you can't see that the venue is only 20% full. And as far as I can tell, none of the networks are covering it. It's not even on Fox News' schedule, although I'd expect they might breakaway when he takes the stage?

I'm sure he's cut in for the biglyest slice. Does anyone else's autocarrot change 'biglyest' to 'bilgiest'? Mine does. I didn't know it was that smart.

Great news folks. Trump says Iran war will end 'immediately after' midterms.🥳🎊🎉🪅
www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cq62j6xkmvyvt

Am I the only one who thinks that's totally class? I don't like war, from a personal, community, feminist, person, existential POV.

I am beyond happy that President Trump will end the Iran war. I just wonder why he's waiting for the mid-terms before it happens.Confused

WTF is that about like?

logicisall · 10/09/2026 01:17

@RedToothBrush everything that you are concerned about has already been discussed on the ME board. Btw far from being upset, the US is actively supporting the Japanese Yen.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/03/trump-japan-currency-yen-explainer

It doesn't make sense for China to sell all its US bonds as that will drive the price down and make interest rates rise and lead to inflation or more realistically stagflation and QE. Where will China then invest its money?
Iran war affects oil, (Vz) fertiliser, (Morocco) helium.
We are all aware on the Iran War threads that today's USD100 barrel trading price is equivalent to a USD177barrel pump price.

Why has Trump stepped in to prop up Japan’s currency?

The US has bought up yen to strengthen the currency for the first time in almost 30 years, with the moves raising questions about America’s motives

He misspoke when he said immediately after the Mid-Terms. He really meant in two weeks.
Seriously though, I did wonder at the precise timescale given but we all know that Trump lies or maybe 'immediately' IS the new 'two weeks'.

'Autocarrot. Thats a cool word :-)'

Attendance isn't overwhelming

What I don't want is an autogarrote.

On his convention, I was just reading a transcript of his press gaggle outside Air Force 1. The one they had while they waited for the auto escape chute to be folded up and put back. Or replaced. Or maybe they just take it off and put an "out of order" sign on the emergency exit. No Idea.

We can ask Trump

"No. They were checking it before and they just wanted to make sure. So they've, uh -- I guess they've already put it up. They wanted to make sure everything works perfectly."

Cool. Be careful putting things up though. They don't like it up 'em. Moving on now, with a wee skip.

"QUESTION 00:01:56-00:02:02 (6 SEC)
And Mr. President, several Republicans in competitive races are not coming to the convention. Do you understand why they're deciding not to come"

"DONALD TRUMP 00:02:02-00:02:13 (11 SEC)

Everybody that's everybody is coming to the convention. Everybody wants to come, but we only want and the people that are -- by the way, we're going to be sold out tonight, just so you understand. Who are you with?"

Everyone wants to come. Except me. I don't want to. But I don't count, do I Don. And yeah, who is that reporter with anyway?

"QUESTION 00:02:13-00:02:14 (1 SEC)
ABC News, sir."

Oh oh

"DONALD TRUMP 00:02:14-00:02:36 (22 SEC)
ABC fake news. One of the worst -- you are the worst of all, in my opinion."

Told ya. Right, back to the convention.

"The reason that some people are not coming is because we don't have room for 500 politicians. We have room for the ones that have a close race, if they're slightly behind or slightly ahead or tied. But we don't have rooms for people that are 35 points up and don't need to be there."

Ahh. The Venue can hold 21 thousand people, but you can only fit in 500 politicians. They must be big politicians. Ahh well, everything is bigger in America I suppose.

But wait. You changed from room to rooms just there. Do you mean someone did not book enough hotel rooms ? No problem surely. The VisitDallas site says the city has 30k hotel rooms. And if you are stuck, I am sure 4 Seasons Landscaping must have a branch in Dallas. Put some bunks down in their yard ?

"We said, stay back and campaign. Every politician that we've wanted to be there is there."

Wait. You just said there is no room/ are no rooms, but you are now saying everyone you want to be there is there, so the people refusing to come....... oh sod it.... its that odd Trumpian logic again.

1/25th of the entire US GDP

Crash the global economy. The only people who have assets still have money. It's an oligarchs charter. He can crash the market knowing he personally can benefit.

The assumption that Trump is acting in the best interests of America and the American people is one that I don't necessarily hold.

If crashing the market screws the American economy, if he can put people against each other enough, he wins. Why? Because ordinary Americans need money to survive day to day and anyone who dissents doesn't get a job for example. Poverty allows exploitation and control over the public.

Better still if he crashes other western economies he can take advantage of that because he has personal assets. Other countries will have to do what he wants because they are desperate for investment. So if he wants Greenland there would be a way to potentially get Greenland via this route.

Trump admires Putin. Putin and the other Russian Oligarchs robbed the Russian state so they could control it themselves as individuals. It gives them huge personal power.

So there's two things here. The calculation for me here is that Trump wants to try and destroy Iran economically but since Iran has had sanctions for years it's less exposed and more used to hardship. But even if this gamble by Trump to destroy Iran doesn't work it doesn't matter because in destroying the American dollar he can reset the world economic order for his own personal gain and power. He doesn't lose.

The removal of gold from the US is a loss of confidence in the US dollar. But the dollar isn't everything. It doesn't mean that there will be a loss of Trumps power / American influence. It's more than Trump becomes American power going forward.

It's disaster capitalism at it's finest.

So if the Repubs win the midterms, and Trump has to find $1.35 trillion to pay his promised 5k to every adult citizen in the US, what do you think that will do ?

I wondered if it would push inflation up?

Inflation is going up regardless.

I think it's baked in as inevitable now.

This money will either never materialise because inflation has gone up because of 'civil unrest caused by the democrats' if the economy tanks or will be conditional being part of Trumps Fan Club rather than merely being a Republican voter (think along historical lines here).

Some of it is really useful though in terms of understanding disaster capitalism.

I think the problem here is the assumption that Trumps interests are aligned with anyones but other Oligarchs. We have seen this play out in how he plays politics repeatedly and still people are not fully grasping it.

Trump doesn't care if the world burns and everyone else is fucked. Even his own supporters. He has a cult core loyalist based who will still try and play out another Jan 6th if there's the opportunity that arises. Because they are hooked on the idea that he will someday pay out for them.

Even if he doesn't there's always a reason why he can't.
