Anyone else feeling sad about summer ending and autumn beginning?

Is anyone else sad that summer is ending? I’ve really embraced the sunny days this year, I find the summer mornings spur me on, and have explored the outdoors a lot with my children.
I’m feeling pretty sad now that summer is over and it’ll soon be dark mornings, back to school and all that jazz. Don’t get me wrong once I adapt I do love autumn and winter. But I hate letting go of summer.
Anyone else?

Usually I feel sadness at the end of summer but not this year!

The wildlife, my garden, the countryside around my city in this corner of France all look parched.

Bring on some autumn weather.

Pamcakey · 29/08/2026 06:52

Yup.
I have horses so winter is hard work for me. They live out in summer but stabled at night in winter which increases the workload dramatically. Plus less daylight to get things done. And it’s always raining or windy. Mud. Etc.

Summer feels so short in comparison!

PinkTonic · 29/08/2026 06:54

I’m sad about it. I know it wasn’t right but I’ve loved the long glorious summer and I’m always a bit down when it starts to be really obvious that the days are getting shorter. I hate the dark months. I have a sunshine holiday next week and then it will really be all downhill until spring.

MarthaLovesLaughing · 29/08/2026 06:55

I've found the heat challenging. I'm looking forward to rain and green ness

i have decided I have reverse seasonal effective disorder and the first time I haven’t felt anxious in a few months has been when the temps dropped. I have really enjoyed the what I would call acceptable summer temps and sitting in the garden in the evening once the weather dropped to low 20’s. In the first time in ages people haven’t asked what my weekend plans are and I’m sure it’s because the weather has changed and it’s made me feel less anxious about not having plans or I’m not making the most of the weather. I finally got out hiking last week and felt so good

Nannyfannybanny · 29/08/2026 07:09

No,in the SE UK corner, weeks of high 20s,up to high 30s.. Crops are dead, fruit trees stressed and dropped their fruit. Hosepipe ban,so. attempting to water 200foot of garden. On vaso dilators, which cause hot flushes and sweating anyway. Hardly able to put one foot in front of the other. Routine completely altered, dogs had to be walked really early morning. No beach trips because its too hot by 8 am. In spite of factor 50, I knew I had 1 skin cancer, turned out multiple..on my face,

.

mumumental · 29/08/2026 07:17

I’m definitely going to miss the summer and wish the winter to pass by quickly.

AgentKim · 29/08/2026 07:26

The only good thing about this hot summer was I could get my washing on the line and it was dry within a couple of hours. Hated the heat was nakered all the time. Glad its raining and has cooled down.
No peas or beans have grown this year in my garden either and I hate the hosepipe ban, just shows how badly run the water company's are, what withall the burst pipes and water wastage.
Time to get cosy.

JuliettaCaeser · 29/08/2026 07:31

I’m with you op. Love summer and the warmth. How can anyone prefer the cold grey months? It’s not usually the autumn colours you imagine either but grey cold wet dark. Urgh. What’s to like?

Augustus40 · 29/08/2026 07:41

I prefer seasonal variation myself. Especially keen on spring and autumn.

DancelikeFredAstaire · 29/08/2026 07:42

Me. After 4 glorious months (give or take), we're now going back to 8 long months of wet, gloomy, cold weather. It's depressing.

MargaretMeldrew · 29/08/2026 07:46

pinkstripeycat · 28/08/2026 22:00

Yes I am feeling really panicky about it. Hate the winter. Roll on spring.

Panicky. That’s exactly how I feel too. I love summer and the heat really isn’t as much of an issue in NI! But I always feel a bit anxious about what I see as the ‘serious stuff’ starting again in autumn. Possibly left over from my days of returning to school (specifically secondary school) where I was so unhappy. I hate the nights drawing in. I love Spring. Spring is hope.

Bambi3919 · 29/08/2026 07:49

I love summer, I live in Aberdeen so no heatwaves here. Never baking hot here either. Not looking forward to winter if anything like last year. 2 full weeks of snow falling after Christmas last year, it was so deep. Then 3 weeks of rain everyday, I absolutely hate it. I’m a summer person.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 29/08/2026 07:53

Winters are not that cold in the south any more. More wet I think. I like winter! Love watching winter sport and winter clothes. Usually have a holiday in Jan or Feb so it gets broken up with better weather if we wish. India wildlife trip this year!

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 29/08/2026 08:11

I'm not devastated, but I do love summer. The long evenings are the best, and I'm in the north so we don't get the very worst of any extreme heat. Plus I have a short, north east facing garden and stuff only really grows well in spring and summer due to all the shade in autumn and winter.

scalt · 29/08/2026 08:15

i know the MN status quo is that we’re not allowed to enjoy hot weather, ‘cos climate change innit, and El
Nino has become a new scary buzzword, 25 years after Bridget jones said “it’s a blip, Latin music is on its way out”, but I have a question:

Why are so many people (especially on mumsnet) never, ever content with the weather or seasons at any time? It’s always too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too full of spiders’ willies, too full of the horror of men in flip flops, too full of people talking about pumpkins, winter boots and hot chocolate, etc.

cluefu · 29/08/2026 08:24

I am amazed at how quickly this year seems to have gone and the change of each season emphasises this, but each season comes with its plus sides for me so I try and focus on those.

Totally understand that SAD is a thing for some and Christmas isn't necessarily something to look forward to for some either.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/08/2026 08:24

Cleo65 · 28/08/2026 22:35

Nope - I'm wholly excited. Not all of us like being melted or battling hoardes of tourists every which way. It's our turn now..... I've just made my first batch of soup.

Season of mists and mellow soupfulness….

Cushionseams · 29/08/2026 08:27

I'm sad that I'm going to have to wear long pants again. I've lived in shorts this summer.

runningwild908 · 29/08/2026 08:30

HRHCurmudgeon · 29/08/2026 05:24

I hate:

jumpers
rain and drizzle (it’ll be like living in a cloud)
frizzy hair
umbrellas
tights
’hot choccy’
being blown about by wind
heavy coats
Christmas
getting up in the dark
coming home in the dark
layers of clothes
wrapping presents
closed windows
snow (after the first hour)
boots
stodgy food

Give me t-shirts, Birkenstocks, shorts, mini skirts and dresses, sunshine, heat, tanned skin, garden doors open all day, no coats, linen, salad and hours and hours of daylight and heat.

This - 110000% ❤️❤️
Are you me?

Anotherslicedear · 29/08/2026 08:32

No - we’re itching to get the wood burner on and hibernate 😆

emmetgirl · 29/08/2026 08:33

No.

millit · 29/08/2026 08:44

I’m totally with you OP. I don’t mind crisp, cold sunny days but last winter seemed to be endlessly grey and wet and I find it incredibly depressing! Summer seems to creep up on us and then boom, it’s over. I don’t think it’s so bad when we have a dry September and October and the temperature slowly cools but last year seemed to plunge straight from summer into winter.

I love shopping but I’ve also come to feel sick of the consumerism with Halloween and Christmas. The bargain shops like b&m and home bargains are full of it already! It’s like we’re constantly rushing from one thing to the next.

I also love how social the summer months are and I can never fit it all in and then January and Feb no one wants to do anything but hibernate and go on diets 🤣

Epoisses · 29/08/2026 08:46

Anotherslicedear · 29/08/2026 08:32

No - we’re itching to get the wood burner on and hibernate 😆

Had the chimney swept this week all ready! Loads of logs ready!

ExOptimist · 29/08/2026 08:51

Not feeling at all sad.

If summers were like they were when I was a child and young woman I would be though. That was when a lovely summer's day was about 22 degrees, over 25 was very hot, 28 was rare and 30 was almost unheard of. And it rained too.

This summer has been unbearable, fed up with sweating, having fans on to sleep, half-dead garden, yellow lawn, no rain for weeks on end. I've had no energy and have stayed indoors on the very hot days.

We have had some showers in the past few days and it has poured all night, having a lie in now listening to the rain and wind and feeling very glad.
