Anyone else feeling sad about summer ending and autumn beginning?

Is anyone else sad that summer is ending? I’ve really embraced the sunny days this year, I find the summer mornings spur me on, and have explored the outdoors a lot with my children.
I’m feeling pretty sad now that summer is over and it’ll soon be dark mornings, back to school and all that jazz. Don’t get me wrong once I adapt I do love autumn and winter. But I hate letting go of summer.
Anyone else?

I used to love summer and grieve when it ended but the heatwaves this year have made me ill, my little back yard has all but been destroyed by the relentless heat and lack of rain. The wider picture of failed crops and food shortages and damage to wild life has changed my attitude to summer. I hate dripping with sweat, having no appetite, twice as many migraines and not being able to sleep.

willowstar · 28/08/2026 22:20

Yes I have loved the summer and really really struggle with autumn and then winter. The gloom just really affects me and the cold hurts me.

Rainbowstarssunlight · 28/08/2026 22:23

Yes I always feel low this time of year. I hate the cold weather and the short amount of daylight and always wish I could emigrate!

Hycosaneyedrops · 28/08/2026 22:24

Absolutely not.

I can’t wait for the dark mornings, dark afternoons, temperatures low enough that you feel the cold in your bones, constant rain for weeks on end.
Multiple meteorological sites suggest this winter could be a “Beast from the East” repeat but worse due to El Niño and I’m excited.

Im expecting a final round of nice weather in late September, early October as we usually get but I’m really hoping for a brutal winter this year.

bluewanda · 28/08/2026 22:25

Nope! Roll on Autumn.

westcott · 28/08/2026 22:27

Not really. It happens every year !

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 28/08/2026 22:27

Yup, I hate the dark and the grey. 😩

No, I am delighted. I hate light nights abd the anti social behaviour that goes with them. September to December are the best four months of the year.

Completely agree! I've longed for the end of August since the beginning of June. So glad summer is over I can't wait for the dark nights. Not long now

Yes I am feeling really panicky about it. Hate the winter. Roll on spring.

Exactly this - and I’ve felt like this for as long as I can remember, right from childhood and the horrible back to school feeling.

I know - first world problems. I know this and the guilt makes it worse TBH. I know that however bad it is here (weather, cost of living, politics, violence, crime, poverty etc etc) as a nation we are incredibly privileged. I am lucky - I have food every day, drinking water on tap, healthcare, a home, a bed to sleep in. I have things many others only dream about. I know I shouldn’t be sad, but I am.

A few scented candles, hot chocolate and cosy blankets won’t lift the sadness, as lovely as they sound. I even dislike the smell of Autumn. It’s an uphill struggle to spring when I feel alive again.

I’ll be getting a SAD light this year. I had one years ago and I think it helped. But yeah, that awful, unsettled, panicked feeling hits every year and it suffocates me. All we’ve got to look forward to is dark evenings, grey skies, rain, being cold….

Cleo65 · 28/08/2026 22:35

Nope - I'm wholly excited. Not all of us like being melted or battling hoardes of tourists every which way. It's our turn now..... I've just made my first batch of soup.

dudsville · 28/08/2026 22:37

I'm on the fence. Normally I enjoy all the seasons, but I'm so tired of being hot, sweaty, showering and changing all the time. I would like to curl up in a warm bed under a nice duvet, maybe with a bit water bottle, and sleep in past early morning day light.

hugoagogo · 28/08/2026 22:41

It would be nice to wear a jumper.
And sleep.
So no.

100%. I can't wait for the season of mists and yellow fruitfulness.

Some very dramatic people on here. The hot hot summers are only going to get worse (thank global warming not me)
I understand that everyone embraces seasons differently, and I love Halloween and Christmas and all the lead up to it. I just find the switch from lots of light and outdoor time, to indoor cooler dark days very disrupting. But that’s just me

I embrace the changes. Tonight I have candles lit and fairy lights on. My comfy PJs are ready to go!

Close bosom friend of the maturing sun.

I just love that poem.

You're the one being dramatic, complaining about the end of this ghastly summer.

Oh no, that was a typo!

TheBirdintheCave · 28/08/2026 22:52

Still just under a month of summer left for those of us who use the astronomical dates :) I will embrace autumn when it arrives at Equinox.

HexInductionHour · 28/08/2026 22:52

@JeanSimmons ok ! Xx

deepseaargyllfish · 28/08/2026 22:53

Yes, I’m devastated.

I feel as though I’m about to enter an extremely long dark tunnel, and it’s going to be a very long time before I see a chink of light at the end of it.

Pyjamatimenow · 28/08/2026 22:58

I was but then I went in a shop today and saw the cutest autumn coat and bought it so I’m feeling much better now!

TheLivelyCat · 28/08/2026 22:59

I love summer, light nights, not having to wear layers, coats, being down the beach, at the side of a lake, eating in a pub garden etc. I can cope with the cold but I find when I'm cold I have a lot less energy, get lazy in the house even with the heating on. I also struggle with the lack of sunlight the constant gray damp air, cold wet muddy dog walks, waking up cold, I'm a cold sleeper normally. Autumn I enjoy if the weather is mild, same as spring.

KojaksLollipop · 28/08/2026 23:00

I’m a summer girl through and through, plus I ride a motorbike so have even more reason to live it!
