I'll start with British Gas, awful company, very expensive and customer service is non existent..there is a reason they have lost a few million customers of recent years, close second place is EE for similar reasoning.

Agree. I have boycotted John Lewis since they forced their female staff at the Cheadle branch to share a changing room with a trans identified male. One staff member resigned to blow the whistle on the situation. Hopefully they have changed this policy as the Supreme Court ruling on the Equality Act made it crystal clear that it is against the law for employers to force female staff to share toilets and changing facilities with men. Still boycotting them though.

Omg I didn't realise this has anyone got up to date intel ??

The company I work for.

Putting customers at risk via allergen contamination and ingredients not being safely stored. Not following trading standards laws and cutting corners in almost every area possible.

You should report them. They could kill someone.

All of the big broadband companies - it’s now a utility and yet I find them so slippery to deal with re pricing. In particular BT, EE and Virgin. I feel certain that many older people are too terrified to search and switch because of the hassle of doing so and therefore they’re paying over the odds.

Edited

It's mad, because there are dozens of great small ISPs out there, but most people have never heard of them. I've already mentioned our own, which is outstanding - and like night and day when compared with the big well-known companies; but if you look at ISP Review, they have a Top 10 reviewed companies and not one of them is truly a household name - the closest is Zen. It used to be a Top 50, and I recall that you'd be routinely getting towards the mid/low 30s before you'd see the name of an ISP that your average person would even have heard of.

The big boys only ever compare themselves with each other, knowing that the majority of people won't even realise that they have far more than a handful of options. I suppose that's how branding works: you don't need to BE the best; you just have to bullishly CLAIM to be the best, and throw lots of money and advertising behind it.

TUI

I booked a holiday 15 months in advance and the flight home was 11pm. They changed it a few months before to 10am so effectively losing us a whole day on holiday which we had paid for.

legally they did what they were obliged to by allowing us to change our holiday if wanted, obviously paying for any difference and no admin fees.

I complained about it amongst other things for that holiday and they were so rude and dismissive of it all. They could have made
some sort of goodwill gesture but there was nothing, not even an apology.

This holiday was one we’d actually waited for for 2 years, because I’d actually booked it the year before and had to change it because of a serious family illness. So for them to then take a day away really stung.

This experience showed me how profit geared they were, as I said they could have made some gesture but nothing not even an apology. I did not get what I paid for and for an 11 day holiday to lose a day is a big deal for a family but they did not care.

I cant remember the name of the shop but it's a shoe shop in coppergate in York

I applied for a job there, aged 16 and they sent me a rejection letter

Only someone had 'forgotten' to put a stamp on the letter and I had to pay to get it

I didn't have much money at the time and it was a massive chunk out of my very small food budget (I still lived at home but my parents had stopped feeding me by then)

My mother went in (behind my back) and complained-they couldn't have been ruder about it

Made out i/she was making a fuss over nothing (she reckons they did it deliberately to save money)

In the end,the woman serving threw £3 at my mother and banned her

I will never step foot in another Vodafone shop

I bought a phone from them and it broke within a week

They told me it had been 'water damaged' (it bloody hadn't!) and threw me out of the shop

I don't know what my father said to them but they did replace it in the end

Carfone warehouse (I know it's closed now)

I bought a payg phone, all good until they sent me a bill

I rang to say I'd not taken out a contract and they swore I had-id paid cash for the phone and was topping up every month

They hounded me endlessly for about 2 years

Long story short, they sent in the bailiffs but got nowhere as I hadn't signed any contract and they dropped it

I cheered when they went under

Mothercare-i wanted a buggy for dd

I walked in and tried to get the attention of anyone to sell me the buggy I had my eye on

They all avoided eye contact, put their heads down and ignored me-i ended up at toysrus and finally got a buggy

Mothercares loss as I had a chunk of cash to spend (for once in my life) they went under a few years later

Halifax bank

I don't know what went wrong but when i was 15,I opened an account with them (just a basic savings account)

Everytime I put money in,a chunk would go out again (so for every £10 I put in,£4 would 'vanish')

I asked what the hell was going on and was told 'it's tax'

No amount of 'im 15,I don't pay tax' would sink in and it kept happening

I shut the account down (or thought i had) and went with HSBC (who have been amazing)

Apparently it's still open and I get statements from them sent to my parents (im nc with them but ds has seen the letters, open on the mantlepiece)

It must have cost them a fortune to keep it open-I've told them many times to close it but they havent and they keep sending the statements

How did that even work? That sounds like the actions of a backstreet money lender rather than a big bank - not that I am particularly any kind of fan of the big banks!

I could understand if they didn't care/realise to inform you about registering to receive your interest tax-free, if you're not a tax payer (although surely this should be a matter of course for a children's account); but actually just helping themselves to a large chunk of your own money that you deposited? Wow! That's surely nothing other than fraud and theft?

Wild deodorant. You don’t get to surreptitiously sell out to Unilever, pump out an excessive number of novelty cases full of plastic components, and still claim to be an ethical choice. Greenwashing gets on my nerves.

Amen to that. I like to comment on their social media posts about what sellouts they are

Definitely British Gas, I’ll never use them again!

I also agree with a PP about sending money to charities that work overseas, someone I know worked for an extensive period in a poor part of the world that is constantly highlighted as needing support and said the corruption is astonishing, very little money gets anywhere near those who need it. Obviously Oxfam would be one of these charities and especially after the sex for aid scandal I’ll never give them another penny.

Agreed. Oxfam have been appalling.

why the fuss about Albert Bartlett
There has been no Fox hunting for years. It was banned completely by a Labour Government

Stircrayz · 27/08/2026 09:35

Animed in Fareham.

We took our poorly cat in there, we didn't have insurance and was told beforehand it might cost up to £700. Obviously this was before even looking at our puss. We said we didn't have that much, so they got a lady out and filled in some forms to pay monthly, if it costs too much.

So they took the cat out back to "monitor" as we had no clue what the problem was. We went home and waited for a call.

So we were called later that evening saying they'd given her sedatives and oxygen (no real proof of any of this) and she wasn't getting any better. But they'll keep her in overnight and see in the morning.

Of course next day they recommend putting her to sleep, which sadly we had to do.

So, few days later we get a bill for £1400. Phoned to ask why so much, we we're expecting around £700 maximum as we were told. The vet was a bit sympathetic and said she'd seen the cat and would've put her to sleep the previous night.

Obviously you pay by the hour if they're giving her medication as well. So keeping her overnight is a nice little earner for them.

Absolutely appalling way to treat people.

3 Mobile, I had a contract phone with them and i dropped it while getting away from the stranger who sexually assaulted me while I was walking home from work. It broke and they told me it was my fault, and that the circumstances were irrelevant! I had a crime number of course and the detective in charge of my case offered to speak to them but they weren't having it. In the end i emailed their CEO and that made them change their tune, they sent me a new phone but as soon as the contract was up I left and went to another provider

That's just silly. It was nothing to do with them that the phone got broken and it was not their fault. I think they went over and above their obligations by sending you a new phone. They sound like a brilliant company and you sound like an unreasonable customer.

TheHeartyDenimTiger · 27/08/2026 09:54

Air BnB. Lived next door to one and it was a nightmare. It would be very hypocritcal of me to ever book one for a trip, knowing the damage they can do to communities. Even though sometimes I am tempted! But hotels all the way these days.

oliil4l · 27/08/2026 09:55

I’d probably put my broadband provider on that list. The actual service was usually fine, but whenever there was a problem it seemed to take forever to get through to someone who could actually sort it out. I don’t mind paying a bit more for a service if it’s reliable, but poor customer service is enough to make me look elsewhere next time.

MyPurpleHeart · 27/08/2026 09:58

Also The Range. I will never buy anything for home delivery from them again.

We bought one of their garden furniture sets in store to be delivered. At this point I should have known something was off when the sales lady said to me, if you have any problems come back in don't call because they are terrible.

Waited weeks and weeks for delivery, it came with no fixings. At all. Not a nut or bolt to be found.

I called and called, I got told to send an email, call this person, send another email, go into the store.

I went back into the store that I bought it from and when I went to customer services and said I had a problem the girl rolled her eyes, laughed and said 'obviously'

I ended up buying my own fixings from screwfix.

Unless you can take it off the shelf and check everything is there before you leave the shop, avoid. There is a reason they are so cheap.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2026 10:01

Pizza Express too - we had a voucher , told the waiter then when we came to pay they wouldn't accept it as the waiter hasn't put this information in. It was a 15% which we lost but they lost customers

Other one was Frankie and Bennies. DD and friend went in , ordered milkshakes and food . One had a hair in in ( DD and friend both had long straight brown/dark brown hair. The one in the milkshake was blonde) They decided not to have the food ( don't blame them) . The waitress was quite arsey ( it's been cooked now) etc

They paid for the drinks and left ( I wouldn't have paid for the contaminated one)
They will probably claim people sabotage the meals for a freebie, bring in foreign bodies to add

Not a company but a local pub, who decided they were "shut" at 9pm, when I got there with my ex boyfriend (who is not white).

My adult children and I always say loudly "the RACIST PUB" when we drive by.

TheHouseElf · 27/08/2026 10:02

Currys/PC World - DS's laptop developed a fault with one of the hinges a few years back, which was still under its 1 year warranty. Took it to my local store who said it would be covered as the laptop was less than a year old and still under warranty, so it was sent it off to their repair engineers - who after having it for over a week contacted to say they couldn't repair it under warranty and would only do it if I paid a charge for it. Since it wasn't a huge issue (ie it worked, but we were worried about the hinge going long-term) I had it returned it back to the store, collected it, got home - and then found out they'd left one of the laptop's hinges completely exposed out of the laptop's casing.

Multiple back and forths with them, asking them to fix it (ie just put the hinge back inside the casing, in the same condition it had been given to them in) which they refused to do! Even it was their engineers that did it. Effectively it left the laptop in an unusable condition as I couldn't undo and refix it myself.

Vowed to point blank never buy anything from them ever again, even it it means costing me more to buy from elsewhere. I'll never give them another penny.

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 27/08/2026 10:11

This one is a bit niche - and sadly there's no real alternative (unless you also use a pump), so I have to keep using them - but the Libre 2 continuous glucose monitors are absolutely appalling for reliability. They're supposed to last for 15 days, but very, very few of them ever last that long before they shut themselves down - which of course they put a positive spin on, about monitoring for quality and safety; many of them fail on the first day. It makes it really difficult to manage your own medication when you have no actual way of knowing how many days' supply you actually have. If you get given 4 of them to last for two months... well, is that 60 days' worth or could it end up being 8 hours' worth?

I hiss under my breath every time I see one of their adverts, going on about how simple they are when, if you ask anybody with diabetes who uses them, they fail constantly and for no apparent reason at all. When they work, they are indeed amazing - credit where credit is due - but they just seem to work on the basis of charging a fortune (I gather the NHS pays £40-£50 a go) for something that probably costs them pennies and then sending out replacements every time people take the trouble to contact them to complain and answer lots of questions. If you ever hear that they've gone into making aeroplanes, run!
