Do you have a TV license?

It seems to me more and more people just don't bother. I do have one, though don't ever watch 'live' TV, I do watch iplayer and other catch up. I watch Netflix mostly.

Do you bother? If so, how old are you? (Im 49 and remember the adverts!)

Yes I do, but I keep the TV in a cupboard and only get it out if there's something I want to see. I very rarely watch at all in the summer and it's usually not live tv but drama on the iPlayer or ITVX. I do use the BBC website every day for news.

We have a licence, but no TV.
It's good to sometimes watch things on iPlayer. We didn't have a licence until you needed one for iPlayer.

I don't understand why you would pay for one if you don't need one? Maybe that's what they rely on.

Yes, we don't watch much BBC but we have Sky Q and record and also use the TV in our touring caravan which is only live TV because WiFi and phone signal is generally not good enough to stream on campsites.

I watch football live so have one as I can't be bothered arguing.

We got married in 2000 and decided not to buy a licence. Back then we watched lots of DVD boxes - and then used iplayer once it came out. Then they banned using that without a licence so we stopped. We’ve had Netflix for several years and Amazon Prime. For the last 18 months we’ve also been watching Channel 4 catch up (I paid £40 for no adverts!).

In the summer I decided I really wanted to watch the World Cup so we bought a licence for the first time in 25 years! I loved it! We’re now catching up on Traitors, Race across the World etc and I’ve cancelled Netflix. There’s lots to watch at the moment. Let’s see how we feel after a year - we may cancel the licence, who knows?!

Any household that watches sports, even if only the live WWF on Netflix is pretty much stuffed and has to fork out for a licence so probably a lot of people have one because of that.

We don’t have one and haven’t for years. There’s so little worth watching so we do without. I mostly watch YouTube channels anyway so I don’t miss live tv at all.

Nope. Stopped paying for one a couple of years ago. I’m 46.

It’s funny how things have changed. In the 2000s when we told people we didn’t have one, they were utterly perplexed! Now it’s normal..

No. We don't watch live TV ever. We have watched iPlayer a couple of times in a hotel room recently when we were away but I think that's covered by the hotel (?)

I didnt for about 3 years. I only streamed and never watched iplayer.
However, i had to buy one again for the world cup. I am annoyed its 30 a month for the first 6 months. Watched a few things on it since though. Will cancel again at some point.

Wouldn’t occur to me not to have one. But yes occasionally watch live BBC TV and use iplayer anyway

Genuine question but why? If you don't ever use the service why on earth would you pay for it?

Yes we do. We tried for a while to go without watching as we have Netflix and all the rest but every so often we wanted something on BBC or itv.

Can anyone tell me - instead of all this nonsense with licence inspectors, threatening letters, etc., why they don’t simply operate like a streaming service and invite people to opt in via a subscription, if you don’t have a subscription you don’t get the services. I know there’s the live tv element which differs from the other services but surely there’s a way to block access to those not subscribing.

Yes, I think it's a bargain. Last night I only watched Sewing Bee on iPlayer and CL highlights on BBC1. There are the odd series I watch on other platforms, we have almost everything, but it's mainly DDs who watch Netflix etc. I mostly watch stuff on iPlayer/listen to Sounds and watch live footy on Sky/TNT.
