Do you have a TV license?

It seems to me more and more people just don't bother. I do have one, though don't ever watch 'live' TV, I do watch iplayer and other catch up. I watch Netflix mostly.

Do you bother? If so, how old are you? (Im 49 and remember the adverts!)

I do have one. I'm 60.

I do like to have the option of watching live TV transmissions whenever I see something on that I like at the time. When I watch the news I always put the live broadcast on.

I watch a fair bit of "On Demand" streaming services too, including iPlayer. I wouldn't risk not having a licence.

Yes. I have always had a licence and I know that my elderly parents would happily pay for a licence that allowed them access to live BBC broadcasts via the iPlayer app from their house in southern europe. While VPNs etc. work, these are beyond their tech capabilities.

Licensing pays for just over half of BBC funding; not all of it. If it didn't, I imagine they'd have to find other revenue streams, like commercial channels. (Which, coming from a country without a tv licence fee, is not the end of the world many people seem to think it is. Just because stations have to make money, doesn't mean they have to turn into Fox 'news'.)

I stopped mine this year thinking I would really miss it but that I would prefer to spend the £175 on heat rather than inflated BBC presenter wages.

I expected to last a month without a licence and to struggle without the BBC and other types of live TV but it has been liberating. I now watch non live TV only and tend to do jobs while watching/streaming TV rather than just sitting there.

I do, in my 50s. I love the BBC and would hate for it not to create the content it does.

It’s not like you get a great deal of choice here in Italy. No live TV. haven’t watched RAI (our BBC) in donkey’s years (not least cos their app crashes if you even look at it funny).

The licence fee is charged to your electricity bill and if you have any kind of media access (internet, computer, two cups and a piece of string) you can’t opt out of it.

No we dont. We dont watch live tv and dont have access to the usual channels, we watch everything via apps. We dont use iplayer and I even find bbc radio tedious.
Id actually be more inclined if they just set it up as a subscription service like netflix etc. This whole "you must have one or youll go to jail" totally rubs me up the wrong way and many of my peers agree. We are in our 30s.

I don't have one. I had one at my old address because I'm a twat I didn't change the address for 3 years. I stopped the direct debit no one has knocked on my door. In the 4yrs I have lived here. But I do get the letters thay say do you need a TV licence. About once a year.

Also I don't understand what live TV is. My son has tried to explain several times. I just don't get it. Just for example if I was watching eastenders at 7.30pm its not live is it? They are not acting right then at 7.30pm its been recorded and aired at 7.30pm

No, I don't, as I don't watch live TV or iPlayer. I dip in and out of subscriptions like Netflix, get Disney+ through the bank, and have Prime, mainly for deliveries.

I think they mean aired live, rather than acted live (aka linear).

Haven’t had one for over ten years at this point, I’m in my early 30s. I just watch streaming services now and at the beginning it was mostly dvd services I used.

We stopped getting one when we realised we had only switched on the TV twice that year. That was about 20 years ago. It annoys me that you can't watch live TV on other channels if you don't have one. Once in a blue moon I would like to watch a sports match but then I just go to a pub or round to a friend's house. I watch films or series on Amazon or Netflix.

Live TV = watching something as it's being broadcast.

Wether you are wathing Eastenders live ie the time its actuslly shown or are streaming it via Iplayer you would technically nrdd a license becsuse you need a license for I player
But if you are watching corrie for example
You would need a licence if you were watcing it live ie the time irs advertised to be shown
But not if you were streaming it later via ITV X

I have one because I rate and value the BBC (dreadful TV news excepted).

I love radio 4 and listen live and also through Sounds. Whilst you do not need a licence for radio, it is funded through the licence fee, so if you care about it, you need to help fund it via the licence fee. I also have Spotify.

As a teacher and tutor, I also use BBCLearn, which is a fabulous resource, again funded out of the licence fee.

The BBC is also a bastion of training and promoting talent, especially behind the scenes. If you are a young person wishing to work in TV from sets to lighting, to camera to script writing, the BBC is your best bet for an apprenticeship. Without it we would lose so much talent to America - because the streaming sites are based there.

£170 is less than £15 per month and I think this is great value, especially as so much of the content is new and fresh. So much stuff on streaming sites is either regurgitated (old BBC/ITV/Channel4/American networks) or very poor quality (terrible plot-lines and scripts).

I occasionally watch some live TV and stuff on iplayer, but also have Netflix, Disney+ and AppleTV.

Yes I do. I use iPlayer a lot and also loads of radio which are covered by the budget if not the licence fee. I’m not thrilled with the BBC these days because I think it’s chasing popularity and losing its integrity but I wouldn’t want to see it disappear.

Using services which are covered by the licence fee and not paying for it is akin to benefit fraud in my book.

Yes but I begrudge paying it. Most BBC offerings are absolute shit and I wouldn’t care if I never watched another sporting event again for as long long as I live.
