What did your holiday cost?

I’m planning for next summer already and interested in how much other people’s holidays cost to see what I can afford! I’ll go first

Op we save what we can spare into a holiday pot and use that money rather than saving more.
Once all essentials are covered and all day to say and monthly stuff covered like food /petrol / kids stuff / savings we then know what's left for fun and save that.
Our holidays are usually two grand over the year usually a city break in Europe at Easter or may and a week somewhere in Oct and sometimes a couple of nights in the UK over summer .
We never get to 3 grand for a single holiday and do it all diy

Sri Lanka, 2 weeks, 2 adults £2,500 each including direct flights, seats on flights, short stay airport parking and travel insurance (c£500 combined), 3 safaris with conservationists, all hotels / villas (varied from £155 a night for villa including breakfast with own pool to £30 a night, all wonderful), all food and other trips out like Lions Rock and private driver (£500ish including tips) and tuk tuks.

Easter around £1k each for La Gomera as Sri Lanka postponed.

Which one ha, I prefer lots of smaller holidays self catering:

• May trip to wales, 4 nights in an Airbnb with a hot tub - £750 all in for 2 people, inc castle visits and walks etc
• June trip to Northumberland- little cabin in the woods, 3 nights, £400 all in - 2 people - we stayed in and read and napped, it was more of a we need to go and relax type break
• July Italy city break, 5 nights in an Airbnb apartment with a shared pool £1000 including flights, accommodation, food museums etc
• Cornwall August break, 7 nights, accommodation was £660 for a cottage, spent about £200 in total for the week on food and spends, for two adults and a teenager (it was in the heatwave so we spent everyday in the beach, own our own kayaks and surfboards, the money was mainly spent on pasties and fish and chips!)
• September Spanish holiday, so far self catering and flights for two adults, 4 star resort with 4 pools, restaurants etc £280pp inc flights. We will hire a car when we get there, so an extra £100 and plan lay on a sun lounger for a week and shop at the local lidl. Not big drinkers so expect another £5-400 on top. There are a couple of day trips we may take.
• Norway northern lights trip October. Spent so far £700 for 2 adults and a teen on accommodation and flights, it’s expensive place, so budgeting an extra £1000 spending money for when we are there for 6 nights

We are visiting friends, they have a house and a pool so we just spent about £250 on EasyJet flights and airport parking. A few trips to the local supermarket but we aren’t eating out so total maybe £400ish for a week away in the sun. 🌞

£4k package holiday to Majorca, 10 nights, b&b, 3 adults. Spent around an extra £1,200 on food, drink & trips

Five days camping in Wales for adult and child - £300

10 days Channel Islands for two adults and child, I estimate around
£450 ferry
£2100 accommodation (more than we'd usually spend, but it was very nice)
£50 activities per day
£300 food (mostly self catering)
Total around £3350.

Both holidays were really good.

AI in Greece for two weeks. 4 star. 4 people. 7k

Not this year but I’ve booked next year for May. 7 nights in a 5* AI in Kos. There’s six of us (2 adults, 4 children) but I’m pretty sure there was a free child’s place in that. £4100 and we’ll probably take around £600 spending money.

This year it’s Butlins due to having a baby in March. My capabilities don’t extend to very young babies abroad!

Feb. EDT to Dublin. £100.

Salou, 3 adults (me and 2 adult offspring!), 7 nights half board. £2400 plus £700 for spends and £100 for theme park tickets.

Callor Millor with friends, so only paying for me. All inc at a very nice hotel. £700.

Glamping in Oswestry to be in the area for the hot air balloon festival £120.

Next year
6 nights self catering in Marbella (in the path of the total eclipse). Will take 1k spends for food and days out.

Was planning on Sorrento, but the eclipse wins!

Will also fit in a short trip to Playa Blanca in Lanzarotte with one of my DD at some point.

Île de Ré, France, two adults and two teens. About £4.5-5k all in - villa with private pool was about £3k, ferry just under £1k. Plus petrol, toll roads, a hotel the night before the return ferry, bike hire, insurance and spending money, though we didn’t eat out.

It’s pretty scruffy/shabby/dirty, lots of full English breakfast for €3 type of places! Hotel is lovely though (we’re here now) so not unhappy!

Would you recommend where you are in Crete?

Thailand sounds doable to me on that budget if you can get decently priced international flights. I can recommend Centrepoint Silom in Bangkok, De Chai The Deco in Chiang Mai and Smile House in Koh Samui as having good 2 bedroom options.

So it's more accurate to say that some parts of GC are 'pretty scruffy/shabby/dirty, lots of full English breakfast for €3 type of places' not the whole island.

When we went, we stayed in the Meleoneras area (west of the dunes) and went on bus trips to inland villages to go hiking and eat lovely Canarian/Spanish food and also to Puerto Mogan and didn't see that sort of place until I went for a walk to the other side of the dunes.

Spain (and Canaries/Balearics) is popular for lower cost mass tourism but it's easy to avoid if that's not what you're looking for. There's also lots of interesting history, culture, watersports etc.

Amazing?

I loved the sights in egypt with my 2 teens, but the people were awful 🤮 we went everywhere on the tourist trail and more besides.

We had 3 weeks for £3.5k in 2023 (1 adult. 1 18 yr old, 1 16 year old)

I got so cross with the people who followed us for up to 1km expecting us to give them money or follow them to a very expensive shop.

I had to actually shout at a man who replaced my 180 on a path that i did to try to get away from him following me.

It's the holiday that I've been sworn at more times than i can count.

Egypt is a vile place as a tourist. I wish the pyramids, abu simbel and all those other amazing places didn't have egyptian men near them.

All I can say is that our experience was very different from yours. My husband and I travelled extensively in Egypt 20 years ago and did experience some pushy sellers etc back then, but this time, there was nothing that could not be dealt with by a firm ‘No thank you’.

We were based mainly on the Red Sea coast in a resort but took a trip to Luxor with a local driver as our guide. The staff in the hotels were unfailingly courteous and helpful.

My son needed help with a medical situation whilst we were away, which meant dealing with local clinics, taxi drivers etc and again, no problems just kindness and good service.

I think that it is natural to an extent that people living in relative poverty in cities see British tourists as wealthy and tout for their custom.

I’m sorry that you had a disappointing time but yes, our recent trip was truly amazing.

Week in Majorca £700 AI 2 adults 1c in May - admittedly not the best hotel option we've done but it was clean comfortable and acceptable a right bargain!
P&o cruise in February 2a 1c £1100 I believe.
We are more quantity and fair quality Vs total blow out with a four year old we wouldn't get our money out of idyllic beaches etc.

2 adults ,Tenerife self catering £1300 plus about 1k spending money which could have been less if we'd have actually self catered instead of eating out every day .

Corfu, half board 5 star hotel, two adults one child, 10 nights in August £8k. That includes car hire, drinks in the hotel, airport lounge, meet and greet parking, extra leg room plane seats etc.

The hotel was beautiful, right on the beach with good food and cocktails and lots for DS to do, so was worth every penny.

Camping in SW Scotland, 2 different locations including ferries for 3 adults + car + dog - just under £400.
Add on diesel (£120) and food (4 evening meals out 6 bought lunches, plus food to cook ourselves and snacks and we spent just shy of £750.
Yes, we could have spent five times more and gone abroad but we'd rather have the money to spend on other things.
