@MewithME the first series of Vigil made me so nervous! Watched the last episode of it in a hotel room with a friend just as we were about to do the West Highland Way, and we didn't sleep that night 🤣

I've discovered that ITVX has an entire channel of Vera, that's always a go-to for me.

Ocado man brought me some autumnal ready meals, looking forward to a cottage pie tonight.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 30/08/2026 16:49

Just got back from lunch at a favourite garden centre. Haven't been for about 2 years so it was lovely to return. The restaurant has a semi outside area. It's undercover but has open bits on the far side so good airflow & doesn't get stuffy. Also minimises germ risk for me.
Not crowded, food as good as ever. Really enjoyed it. I've got out 2 weekends running - woohoo!
Will make coffee shortly then feet up for the rest of the day. Lazy but pleasant 😊.

A cottage pie with a side-order of something cosy sounds great.

I think we've had more value from an ITVX subscription than from any others. They really do have some classics. We watched all of Morse and are saving Endeavour for the long winter evenings!

That is so nice, I bet you feel more human today. It truly is the little things that make us feel good.

MewithME · 30/08/2026 16:55

Ohhh I can't watch Vera. I'm from the North East originally and her hammed up accent gets right on my wick 😆. In theory I should like it. I loved Shetland. In fact, I could happily do a rewatch of that too.

There's too much TV to watch isn't there? I get fomo... too much choice!

Jacket spuds for tea here. Lazy but not UPF at least.

@TeaAndStrumpets you don’t need to subscribe to ITVX unless you mean you pay to not have the adverts. Morse and Endeavour are good programmes. Did you watch Lewis too?

Yes we pay because I really hate adverts. Lewis was great too!

I'm one of about 3 people that paid for Mumsnet without ads. It was lovely when I switched those off... though there was a thread the other day when someone was being pasted for doing the same. Apparently you can just use adblockers but I'm too tired to work that out 🙈

I don’t watch enough ITVX to pay but I bet it’s worth it. I hate adverts too

martha79 · 30/08/2026 19:54

Haha I get that about accents @MewithME (even though I find it very comforting hearing Vera call everyone 'pet'). I don't mind the adverts as I'm such a fidget I need to get up every so often anyway, but I did used to hate the Channel 4 streaming ones that were personalised and said your name in a really creepy voice!

Garden centre sounds lovely @CoffeeBeansGalore - nice to be able to sit outside.

Got a week off work now and I'm having quite mixed feelings about it - trying to be positive and make some small plans so I don't get too bored and lonely, but it's also potentially another long stretch of time without really speaking to anyone. I think it's bothering me that this is the first "academic new year" where I'm not going back to any activities like choir rehearsals or dance classes - that usually makes it easier to deal with the darker evenings etc.

MewithME · 30/08/2026 22:26

@martha79 but good new telly programmes start (excited for celebrity Traitors) and it's nice when it's yucky out to be cosy. We need to do some hygge or whatever they call it. 😊

I do like autumn. I like the colours and the change in seasonal veg in my box delivery and stuff like that.

I know what you mean about being at home alone. Little trips out for a coffee with a book when I'm feeling well enough help me. Or a phone call with a friend etc.

I'm too exhausted to do anything in the evenings anymore and actually I've been a single parent with no help so long, I'm used to it. I think I'd feel really weird being out alone in the evening now!

I like an evening bath with my audiobook on or podcast too. Little routines can help.

Would you manage an online evening class perhaps? There's always us to pester 😉

Morning all!

Sunny but cool here, loving my hot water bottle!

Yesterday was a weary one but a few sessions of sleep did help. I was forgetting words all day but a bit more alert this morning.

Nothing to report otherwise. I tried a new moisturiser and don't look any less wizened! Unfortunately I am allergic to face creams, perfumes etc, so I am wary of anything new. I did a patch test under a pad first and the cream was OK but the tape I used made red marks and peeled off some skin! Hopeless. The cream didn't sink in all, so another wasted effort 😣

FuzzyPuffling · 31/08/2026 11:13

Morning all. Hoping everyone has a spare spoon or two today.

I used all mine up yesterday morning, singing in the band, and felt lousy in the afternoon. But hurrah, a sleep ( even one with 3 loo trips) has made me feel quite a bit better.

DD2 has just been round for coffee and the second lot of washing is in the machine. Winning!

Definitely winning! I find talking so tiring, singing must be far far worse. But such fun I imagine. Bonus though is I believe it stimulates the vagus nerve, also humming etc. I often sing to gee myself up!

danglethedingle · 31/08/2026 11:55

@TeaAndStrumpets brave to try a new moisturiser with reactive skin, hope it works out.

I stick to the one I've used for about 30 years, I don't know if it really helps with the whizening, but it does seem to help me not get dry patches. I just wish it had a sunscreen, but they weren't a thing when it was invented.

We've had a lot of rain over the last few days, our pond is now half full from being completely dry. It seems to be holding water, so it must have just evaporated, not leaked as I feared. Its also overwatered my tomatoes, I wont waste the split ones, they can be made into passata and put in the freezer.

That sounds very productive @FuzzyPuffling hope the laundry dries and doesn't get rained upon.

I'd love to have a mooch round the shops and look at the Autumn things, get a coffee and a scone, but I just don't have the oomph. Its also DHs idea of hell 😂, I know he'd go with me, and pretend to enjoy it, and even try to be helpful, but I know he'd be thinking of all the things he'd rather be doing instead. I might do a virtual mooch on the internet. But now I want scones, so I might make some. 😋

MewithME · 31/08/2026 12:06

Morning all. (Just about...11.59 as I type!)

DS is off to his Dad's so I'm going to have a restful afternoon before work tomorrow.

Been a little productive this morning. Big news. I booked a hair appointment! Just taken the plunge with a salon near to me and they had a box for requests and a tick to say I am a new customer....so I asked if music could possibly be quieter and explained I have ME so fingers crossed 🤞🏻!

I have also started sorting school stuff out. I have a bunch of uniform to give away. I would like it to go to those in need but you never know if you put it on Facebook. Some people hoover things up and then sell them! Still it solves my problem I guess. If I donate to school directly then it's a bit late isn't it? Parents will need it before they start.

Beans on toast for lunch I think! Exciting stuff!

Feeling whistful about summer already but onwards we must go !

@danglethedingle oh I know I'm being optimistic re the face cream! It's one I've used before, many years ago, and I've just remembered why I stopped using it. It just sits on the surface and flakes off! Washed it off now. I get eczema round my eyes and it really is best if I use absolutely nothing but water but obviously still seeking the holy grail!

It's a great time of year for storing veg. DD1 has a dehydrator and dries all sorts. She's got a polytunnel and her family are sick of courgettes and marrows!

I would love an autumn browse! When we've had house viewings the last year we've disappeared to a garden centre cafe for an hour and it was a good excuse for a short trip out. I would love a trip round TK Maxx Home Sense etc but I know I wouldn't last long!

Oh well done on the hair appointment, that is progress. Good luck.

Re school uniform I would absolutely give it to the school (if they want it) They may have kids joining after term starts, for all sorts of reasons.

martha79 · 31/08/2026 12:59

Afternoon all

Well done on the hair appointment @MewithME, I hope they can make it comfortable for you.

I will continue to pester you all, of course 😄I'm starting the online 'recovery' programme I signed up to next week, so that will probably be quite a lot of learning/ new things for a while. Also considering a drop-in meditation class I've seen advertised in one of the venues in the local park, it's on a Friday morning when I'm off work and on a good day I think I could probably manage the walk and then sit for an hour. This term is about dealing with stress...

@TeaAndStrumpets every so often I try to find the holy grail of face creams but I react to lots of things too, and nothing seems to settle into my skin well. Any time I find something I like, it tends to get discontinued! At the moment I'm using more hydrating mists and a serum which is OK. I have the version of hypermobility that makes your skin quite soft and stretchy so it doesn't seem to have mattered too much so far, but I'm convinced I'll wake up once day as a mass of wrinkles 😂

Am quite sleepy and wobbly today - counselling appointment at 2 then back to dozing I think.

TodayIsabetterone · 31/08/2026 14:43

Afternoon all, had an early start as my DD got dropped home from a festival first thing. She was straight in the shower and to bed. I expect she may not emerge for some time!

Had a quick tidy around ( one handed) as had my mum pop over for coffee so a visitor motivates even if it’s only my mum! Had a nice catch up and ready for a rest now.

The drop in meditation class sounds perfect @martha79 I do wish there was something like that near me as I feel I’m not well enough to do the usual type classes on offer. I used to do an online meditation class sometimes but the lady running it became unwell I think. A shame as it was lovely.

Have a peaceful Monday all 😊

TeaAndStrumpets · 31/08/2026 15:12

I've had a sudden burst of activity! DH has been packing every day but he doesn't sort as he goes - which drives me mad. He's reached my sewing cupboard and I've been in and sorted things first! Most of it I've put in a box for DD1 who is forever mending things. At least all the different threads and rolls of bias tape will be available when I want anything. I used to sew a lot but it's just too exhausting and bad for my neck.

I've saved some navy thread and some matching remnants for patching DH's trousers. He wears the same trousers all the time I mean same make and colour not the same ones 😂There has been comment on Grandad's boring clothes but it's sheer laziness and saves thinking. After a lifetime of smart suits he is happy to just be comfortable!

@martha79 I think face mist is probably the way to go, I'm sure our hard water doesn't help. I've got a chlorine filter in the shower, too.

@TeaAndStrumpets I've used Olay for years. I have really sensitive skin & have to be so careful. Used to use the sensitive beauty fluid but then it just wasn't moisturising enough in the winter as I hit 40. Currently using the Olay double action (£5 ish in Tesco). Have used the sensitive anti wrinkle one as well. The day one has SPF 15 in it. Usually can get for around £6.99.

Thank you! Always good to have a recommendation. It's nice now I don't wear glasses, the pads seemed to irritate more if I had anything on my skin.

Oioiqueen · 31/08/2026 16:57

@danglethedingle I've also got the urge for a mooch. I love a good garden centre and one about half an hour from here has a great Christmas section from early October so I can't wait for that one. The kids go back to school Thursday I'm debating going out for my first mooch on Friday. I quite like getting my stocking fillers from B&M as soon as they come out so it's mostly done and I can forget about it.

@MewithME I wonder if you can get hold of your local food bank to whether they have families that they deal with who might be interested perhaps? And well done on the hair appointment.
