I watched the documentary 9/11: Inside the President's War Room on BBC2 last night. Powerful stuff. Dubya was by no means a stellar president, but I cannot imagine how that dreadful day would have played out with Trump & Co. at the helm as the chaos and horror unfolded around them. GW would look a shining beacon of leadership and integrity compared to the current shower of no-marks.

I would have said it was an identical situation: one nation calling a body of water one thing and another nation, or in this case the rest of the international community, calling it another. (I am not so silly that I think the inhabitants of Great Britain are of more importance in the great scheme of things than the inhabitants of France are; and the Germans call it the "Ärmelkanal", the Dutch "Het Kanaal", the Spanish "El canal de la mancha" and the Welsh "Mor Udd".)

I doubt anyone in Canada is going to call that body of water "Lake America", and I don't see anyone here or in Italy or Belize or RSA or Tasmania or Somalia or Bahrain or Japan or Croatia or Finland or Uganda doing so either: why on earth would they? The Americans (the stupid ones, anyway) can call it what they like.

This year is 25 years since 9/11 and apparently Trump had indicated he wanted to make it all about him a speech at the Ground Zero memorial. Was told 'No' as the ceremony is deliberately kept bi-partisan and focused on remembering those killed and honouring the first responders (politicians have been stopped from making speeches since 2012) so he's not going to the GZ ceremony and will do his thing at the Pentagon 9/11 memorial instead - as he did last year.

Vance, Giuliani, Clintons, Bush and Obama are expected to be at the NY ceremony.
Presumably all the Trump toadies will be bravely standing shoulder to shoulder with His Ineffable Hugeness at the Pentagon.
