My son has been offered social housing.i can help him with sone things. But not larger items.

I'm hoping i can find a charity of some sort that sells 2nd hand furniture. As we could probably get most things he needs under one roof and its likely they will deliver.

Just to ad British heart foundation and simlar are to expensive. We can't use free cycle . Facebook anything that requires collection . We do not drive or have access to a car. So it makes sense to use a charity

So bit of a long shot but does anyone know of charity's that sell 2nd hand furniture in the southeast london area..

Try things like freecycle or facebook marketplace, sometimes things are offered free to good home on there. We gave away a bed on there. Some charity shops will have small furniture.

Wow. Is she paying for Russell Hobbs etc ...? Very common attitude I come across in a client supporting role is wanting top of the range, even when free, sometimes new, items have been offered.

When dm died I rang a refugee charity about dm’s furniture. She had only very recently purchased a new bedroom suite - wardrobes, dressing table etc. They were so rude! I was informed crisply that their clients didn’t want second-hand items, only new furniture donated by stores. So charity began at home and I sold the furniture.

Yes. I come across similar entitled attitudes in my line of work I'm afraid. And no one is talking about palming off junk- new or nearly new items have been rejected just the same. My favourite was "but I want a Bosch washing machine!" Okidoke.

Let's hope they get a reality check before they get into huge debt. However, you don't sound like someone who's brought him up to expect 'new from John Lewis' as a basic standard of living, so it's curious as to why he thinks this is what's achievable to the average young person starting out.

Oh lord! Yes, leave them to it. Hopefully they won't get into debt buying brand new top of the range stuff. I'm in my 40s and have just moved house and happily bought a second-hand sofa. Could I have afforded a new one? Yes. Did I want to waste money on one when a sofa is a sofa as far as I am concerned? No. Plus I wanted a pink one and they're not currently trendy so I probably wouldn't have found a new one anyway.

A lot of my other things are second-hand too. I did spend on an oak bedroom suite and a decent desk etc but if I couldn't have afforded to I'd have happily accepted whatever was feasible! Throwaway society must be contributing to the attitudes of a lot of younger people unfortunately.

I just saw a nice corner sofa looks pretty nice its navy blue. And his girl friend says no way i hate navy blue.
I'm going to talk to ds on his own later. Its his tenancy not hers. Not saying she should butt out. But still need to be real.

Perhaps advise him not to take on debt because someone else (gf) tells him to do or buy certain things 😬
Is she moving in with him? If he's easily influenced, do you feel that cuckooing is something you need to worry about?

Given your updates, I’d leave them be. Let them figure it out themselves. It won’t harm able-bodied adults to have to sit on the floor with cold food from their expensive fridge.

Just tell people on a local Facebook page that he needs stuff for his flat and people will offer help. It's that simple.

Completely agree- good luck, OP. You're obviously trying to teach him to cut his cloth accordingly and frankly it won't be the gf who goes into debt if he tries to over reach himself.
