My son has been offered social housing.i can help him with sone things. But not larger items.

I'm hoping i can find a charity of some sort that sells 2nd hand furniture. As we could probably get most things he needs under one roof and its likely they will deliver.

Just to ad British heart foundation and simlar are to expensive. We can't use free cycle . Facebook anything that requires collection . We do not drive or have access to a car. So it makes sense to use a charity

So bit of a long shot but does anyone know of charity's that sell 2nd hand furniture in the southeast london area..

Thanks 😊

Ds signed his tenancy this morning 😃. Obviously hes very grateful and happy.

In the kitchen theres a gap for the washing machine and cooker. But no space for a fridge. . The hall way is very narrow the width of the front door. So he can't put fridge in the hall he won't get by. Having it in the living room or bedroom wouldn't be very nice. I'm hoping there is somewhere he can put it and hes just not fully thought about it.

Because the front door and hall way is so narrow hes restricted to what kind of furniture he can have more so sofas so its gonna be hard.

Good news 👏 options may have to include counter top fridge- a freezer would have to be sited somewhere else. Its common to only get 2 appliance spaces in some SH, frustrating as it is. Or if he doesn't do much oven cooking perhaps air fryer/microwave/2 ring worktop hob could be a solution and use the cooker space for fridge freezer....?Edited to add has he looked properly at the kitchen? No fridge gap doesn't necessarily mean there isn't actual space for one. If there is room next to the units for example?

Picpac876 · 24/07/2026 18:35

Could it be that the gap he thinks is for a washing machine is for a smaller size fridge/freezer?

Suchavirgo · 24/07/2026 19:07

Does your local recycling centre have a tip shop? Ours does and it’s amazing the amount of good quality items people chuck!

Potentially possible- it really is the case especially in smaller SH flats that there may only be 2 gaps for total appliances. My friend had to put her fridge freezer in the second bedroom, though I don't think its an option in this case

Southlondonbynature · 24/07/2026 20:10

Not read through but have you tried Emmaus? They have a shop in Lewisham and Plumstead, recently had a hotel donate their bedroom furniture, quite nice as well

DeftGoldHedgehog · 24/07/2026 20:11

Some housing associations even have their own furniture charity.

ARingtoit · 24/07/2026 20:42

Post on your local Freecycle site! People will want to help/clear things out they don't need.

I moved into a tiny HA flat. I ended up getting 2 armchairs as there would have been no room for a sofa.

Because it's just me here, I don't have a cooker. I have an induction hob, red copper chef thing and a table top oven

No there's only 2 gaps one for washing machine. All the plumbing is there. And the cooker gap.

Ah thank you. He has a key worker. That may be able to refer.

Was he able to speak to his Key Worker about a referral for the Emmaus furniture pack, OP?

gumtree, Facebook marketplace, local shop windows, friends/family, large item charity shops. Some people will deliver or maybe you might have to get a lift/pay for delivery. Hope fully someone will be able to help! Good luck x

Yellowrose57 · 01/08/2026 14:27

Sorry here again just a rant not looking for solutions.

Ds. "Mum can I borrow 290.00" my key worker is coming in 4 weeks. I need to get flooring. And get everything sorted. I told him no. But i do feel guilty but I'm going to stick to it.

I decided to step back. let them make their own mistakes. They wouldn't contact any of the charitys. But what made me step back was when they had 100 voucher which they said they would use for microwave, kettle, toaster. I'm thinking great idea. Have a way to cook good. Then they changed their mind and spent 100 on a spin mop. Broom and few other bits. And 200 on a fridge freezer when they could have got reconditioned for around 100.

So i haven't seen them helping themselves so I said no to the 290.00

Why does the flooring have to be sorted before a key worker comes?!

Hold firm and don’t lend the money. They are prioritising the wrong things and will need to accept that if you do that, you don’t have the money for other things.

You’re not a cash cow.

Social housing has always been no flooring all the walls stripped. Definitely for my council anyway although some of the new builds have flooring and white walls. But not the old builds. Its just how it is.
If he can get laminated all good. But I think he just needs to get what ever he can on the floor for now. He has mentioned vynal/lino which may be an idea.

I think they take out old flooring in case of infestations.

BTW British Heart Foundation do deliver, or at least they did last time I bought something from them. You have to pay, though.

I don't know. Either hes ovet thinking, his girl friend is bugging him, or he himself is being impatient. Yeah I will stick to it. I just feel a bit guilty.

FFS I would go ballistic at £100 on a fucking mop when they don't have flooring or essential small appliances.

I wouldn't pay that myself unless it was self propelling and I'm financially comfortable.

Can his key worker advise on sensible budgeting? Maybe get him on a course? Does he have sufficient income to pay his bills and buy food etc?

Do not feel guilty about saying no while he's making such poor decisions.

Agapornis · 01/08/2026 17:14

I hope you made a point of telling him he needs a floor to (spin) mop...what an odd choice to make!

likelysuspect · 01/08/2026 17:17

He doesnt need flooring right away, he can get some cheapy rugs or carpet off cuts and just lay those down until he's saved up

XenoBitch · 01/08/2026 17:18

I bet he wont even use the mop.

Supersimkin7 · 01/08/2026 17:20

A designer mop but no floor to, er, mop?

Well it wasn't just a mop. Was other bits to. Like broom, dust pan and brush. Etc. But it was just stuff you can pick up cheaply.

He's done a budgeting course. But he knows the right things to say. Doesn't put them in to action though.

He has enough money in general.

I do feel guilty. But im sticking to it. I'm not actually helping him by lending/giving money i probably should have stopped a while back.
