My son has been offered social housing.i can help him with sone things. But not larger items.

I'm hoping i can find a charity of some sort that sells 2nd hand furniture. As we could probably get most things he needs under one roof and its likely they will deliver.

Just to ad British heart foundation and simlar are to expensive. We can't use free cycle . Facebook anything that requires collection . We do not drive or have access to a car. So it makes sense to use a charity

So bit of a long shot but does anyone know of charity's that sell 2nd hand furniture in the southeast london area..

Thanks 😊

surely he just has one pot of money though, so if he isn’t spending 40-50 quid on food then he can put that money into getting furniture?

I'm confused. He uses his money to buy food. So he doesn't need a food bank. I'm not sure what you mean by one pot of money.

We had a mattress and two garden chairs.
We had a front door of our own and were so happy with that.
Everything else was added slowly after. Good memories 😁

Yes, happy memories. My husband and I moved into our house with 2 garden chairs and couldn't have been happier because it was ours. Everything else had to wait because every penny we had went on the deposit and fees.

Shinyandnew1 · 22/07/2026 18:21

If buying stuff from the British Heart foundation is too expensive, how are they going to afford Russell Hobbs appliances??

Is the girlfriend going to be living there as well?

I’m not sure what’s confusing- so say for arguments sake your son has 1000 to last him the month. Rent and bills are say £750 so he has £250 left for the month, for which he needs food, furniture, some clothing becuase he’s changed shape/worn out his shoes whatever you want.
There is a shortfall in his overall budget between what he has coming in and what he needs to go out.
it doesn’t much matter what the allocation of funds is he is in a deficit so he can use a foodbank? Surely?

Lincslady53 · 22/07/2026 18:34

Our son moved into social housing after a period in a mental health unit, following a serious breakdown. He was offered a basic furniture package, paid for on a weekly basis with his rent. It was enough to get him started, we helped with other bits a pieces that he needed. So check with the council.

ThatBlueDeer · 22/07/2026 18:38

Some council have a hardship fund it might be worth looking into that. Also ask the housing association what help is available. Good luck

ByAgileBrickGoose · 22/07/2026 18:46

Check for a local furniture project or Salvation Army is quite cheap in our area

I’d leave them to it. Do they work-if they want lovely new furniture in specific makes and colours, they will need an income.

Will she be contributing to the rent/bills do you think?

He will be getting his rent paid by uc.
He buys his own food already and take aways almost everyday he stops doing that he will have money for food. And general bills Food banks are for people who have no means of getting food ds does.

Yes. So in essence your son is being feckless - most people would have cut the takeaway out when they were getting ready to leave home to give a little start up fund

If he has £50 for food he could use the £50 to buy furniture and use the food bank to get food.

I volunteer at a food bank and plenty of those who use our services are there because they’ve spent their money to repair their car or replace the boiler etc. No judgement, sometimes food budget is the first thing to go.

RaininSummer · 22/07/2026 19:14

I know you are asking about furniture but please remind him that if he lives with his girlfriend, it will need to be a joint UC claim otherwise it would be considered fraudulent. Might also be worth teaching him to cook as takeaway every day us both unheyand unsustainable financially.

ThistleTits · 22/07/2026 19:19

@Yellowrose57 SVDP and Salvation Army are really helpful. Emmaus do furniture at reasonable cost and deliver. Good luck.

TerfOnATrain · 22/07/2026 19:21

He only needs a bed right now. Over 40 years ago we got our first house, we had nothing, a big fat zilch other than a mattress on the floor. The cooker was eventually sourced on interest free credit, the sofa came from a pub refurbishment and was as hard as rock, we didn’t get a bed frame or table or half decent sofa for literally years. Our sofa sat on a square of carpet frayed at the edges and surrounded by bare floorboards I used to mop ever day.

take what he can get or afford, and if he can’t get it or afford it right now, make do.

it won’t kill him and it’s life and will make him strife for better.

Try freecycle

The British Heart Foundation has several furniture shops south of the river and the stuff they sell is really good quality. They also deliver.

Like a lot of people on this thread, when I moved into my first place with my own front door, I had nothing. A colleague lent me one of those foam armchairs that fold out into a single mattress (I have no idea if you can still get them) and I slept on it for a year. I was so glad to have a place of my own after living in horrible shared houses that I didn't mind!

I had two of those as my sofa for the first year or so in my first owned flat, double mattress on the floor in the bedroom, second hand fridge freezer was a moving in present from my parents and I bought a washing machine on interest free finance (had to remember to pay the final balance by a certain date or they would add interest to the whole amount). It’s part of the fun of having your first home, might be a bit shit but it’s your shit!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 22/07/2026 19:33

He should hire a man and a van for a day and in advance of that day, arrange pick ups of as much free furniture as he can find so he can get it all done in one go

Omgheslikethat · 22/07/2026 19:51

Put a wanted on freegle or free cycle and say you don't have transport.

Local people might deliver, costs nothing to ask nicely.

Bobbingtons · 22/07/2026 19:51

I remember when I moved out of the family home into a flat of my own I just went on eBay. Picked up a super king bed for 125, took an old metal daybed for my sofa. Managed to get a wardrobe for my kid for 40. The fortunate thing was that I could drive so hired a van, but think I got the initial furniture for well under 300 and over 150 of that was for my son.
Those kind of bargains are still about, just checked eBay and a perfectly useable sofa is under 50 if you look about.
Sounds like his expectations are not in line with his budget. Honestly as long as he has a bed and fridge freezer he could pick up a couple of folding chairs from. Amazon for 20 and then buy extra stuff second hand over time. If I look back at some of the hovels I put up with in my teens and 20s it's amazing how little you need!
