I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

My dd was usually pretty good about my clothes, but we were out shopping and I stopped in front of Bon Marche and admired a dress. She took my arm, steered me away and said "No mum, you are not old enough for Bon Marche, I dont even think Grandma is old enough for Bon Marche"
I bought a jacket with embroidered flowers on the yolk and fringing on the arms. So many Cotton Eye Joe references.

The only way to deal with it is to look them dead in the eye and say ‘great. That’s what was going for’

my dd is pretty tactful tbf on her. And I also wouldn’t go out dressed as she does so I’m not taking style advice from her!

she is also good at complements and will tell strangers (mainly teenage girls) if she likes their outfit. She also buys her gran things that she thinks are her style

How does a kid born in 2012 know who Bagpuss is?!

My DS 19 told me one morning that I looked trendy! Seriously it made my day, was walking on clouds all day 😂

I wore a dark green fur jacket to a wedding a few years ago. Thought it looked very chic. My husband called me Orville all day.

My son, when a teen, watched me trying to do something with my mop of hair and said reassuringly, “Don’t worry Mum, you haven’t got a hairstyle.”

I bought a top from Sea salt. When I showed it to DD she looked very concerned and said "c'mon Mum, you're better than that, you can't let yourself go".

Lets hope she eventually learns some tact snd subtlety, both great skills in life

I remember showing our DC an old episode of Bagpuss and they were astounded that anyone would watch it.
It was crap st the time and hasn't aged well.

Dh did this to me. I bought a red midi dress with a high neckline for work, dh walked in to the bedroom as I was trying it on, looked me up and down and said ‘blessed be the fruit’. It went on Vinted the next day

Tell him getting old is a privilege and nothing wrong with wearing what makes you happy - any age. Plenty of cool grannies about!

Oh I remember another one. I had a nice black top with some red stars on. Teen DD asked what time my shift at cineworld started!

In any pixar film there is the cartoon mum, bobbed hair, hoodie or t-shirt, jeans and trainers. The mum is usually fairly pear shaped and innocuous.

Yeah...at 22, that's not just a child with no filter, or a teenager being a smart arse and thinking they know all there is about fashion.

To be fair we only watch older cartoons with our toddler. The new ones are terrible. He loves button moon and has never seen paw patrol.

Now this kind of jokey feedback I can get on board with! Better than boring and unimaginative “you dress like you’re old / like a granny etc”

I love it when my DH calls me a CBeebies presenter or shouts “goodnight John boy” for my more frilly stuff - I can take a bit of stick and confident to just I wear what I like.

But people who think we should all dress like clones and heaven forbid we wear a pattern past the age of 40! They can get in the bin.

Now this is sensible advice and sensitively done - well done to your DD - nobody should be shopping in Bon marche

My DD once told me that I looked like Patrick from SpongeBob.

She also has a thing about jorts. She tells me off every time I wear them. She told me, under no circumstances can I wear black jorts as I will look like a lesbian (she has nothing against lesbians, she is bi herself).

She actually often likes my clothes, and especially my shoes and they often find their way into her room. Sometimes though, when I ask her if she likes an item of clothes, she will ask if I mean for me or for her.

Before Xmas I bought a long (just below knee) black rubber coat with slightly elasticated waist, and white borg lining.

I thought I looked effortlessly incredible in my fantastic stylish coat that combined over-sized chic with a subtly feminine nipped-in shape.

DH told me I looked like a senior SS office, like a "really competent one who'd be in charge of a whole concentration camp".

Erm, thanks.

I haven't worn the coat since.

MIL has a giant bagpuss teddy in her spare room. When they were small they would play with it and fight over who could take it home so I showed them the origin story. The actual TV show was less appealing as I remember. Bit dull.

I'm having a total sense of humour failure about this thread. I just don't find rude teen daughters undermining their mothers funny. How do you all put up with it?

I loved Bagpuss especially the mice. I showed my DC Bagpuss when they were younger but I think that it was just too slow. My favourite TV show when an infant was Pigeon Street though.

My teen wants me to dye my hair the same colour as Periwinkle in Tinkerbell - so white!

Primark ran him as a character and now you see bits in Asos etc. Merchandise as well as clothes. He's still on the TV.
I think take advice on clothing from proper adults. An adult woman isn't going to have the same look as a child under 18, who has got time to have her make up flawless, so the posters being down about that are a bit sad.
