Nothing like a teenage daughter to keep you humbled…

I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

My husband said I looked like Dora the Explorer the other day. Shorts, t-shirt, sun hat and back pack.

Marking place 😁😁

I bought myself an oversized leather bag, all squishy and spacious with a long strap so it could be worn across the body. I thought I looked the cat's pyjamas. Elder DD says (as I am short in stature) that I looked like a Borrower.

Boys can be just as bad!!!

I brought a long pink puffa coat.

ive never had a long coat before and asked DS what he thought.

“I love it. You look like super worm and you know how much I loved Julia Donaldson books” 🤷‍♀️

He was 19 at the time 🤣

This gotta be my favourite comment here😂

I hit my teens in the late 60s, and the clothes that were in fashion then and in the early 70s were, in hindsight, horrendous.

I daresay many of these critical teens will look back when they're 30-odd and blush at what they used to wear!

I got my hair cut and my 14year old told me I looked like He Man.

Hahahaha
thats brilliant
I think I may have had a similar haircut and my DD 19 said I looked like a medieval peasant

So nice to see how many people here have brought up spiteful teen bullies. Heartwarming 🫠

Twoshoesnewshoes · Yesterday 09:42

Yawn

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · Yesterday 09:53

My DD21 will sometimes just look at me and then say, hopefully, ‘do you have anything else you could wear?’
😂

If you said that to her how would she react?

Yes. Obviously I then kicked her out to live on the streets because I’m a mumsnet mum and really after 16 all YP should either be self sufficient or desperately grateful for food and shelter.
It’s a lighthearted thread. FFS

Ok. Calm down 😂!
Some of these are funny or witty. Not just rude.
However. Your relationship! 😂

Don't question this comment. I had the nerve to 😁!

ImthatBoleyngirl · Yesterday 09:58

I'm at the point where I ask DS14's opinion before I leave the house because I don't trust myself anymore. Unless she's pissed me off that is, then I go rogue! 🤣

I am personally glad they still have some wit, humour and cheekiness the woke police have all but killed off these qualities! It is received lightly with the love it is intended.

Not my teenagers (they where bad enough) but my father

My mother's birthday was coming up and she wanted 'a nice outfit' rather than his normal fall back of present of jewellery

Being a bit (lot) clueless about ladies clothes,he asked my aunt if she'd come shopping with him (and to be fair, she has amazing taste)

Together the picked out the most gorgeous red top and matching red skirt (my mother used to be a really large lady)

Got home, wrapped it up and proudly gave it to her on the day

She shot upstairs to try it on,came back down and did a twirl in front of us

We where well trained and did the 'you look lovely' but my father says what comes into his head

'Oh love,you look lovely,just like a big,fat letterbox!'

She threw the biggest tantrum (she's a narcissist) took it off, threw it at him and started screaming at us

I had to take her back upstairs and use some of her other clothes to tone it down a bit (and she did look much nicer when not dressed head to toe in red)

I mean she did look like a letterbox-it looked a lot nicer on the hanger but there was no need to scream like that

Years ago, long before I came along(early 70's),my mother, father and (same) aunt had gone shopping

My aunt tried on some dungarees and made the massive mistake of asking my parents what they thought

'You look lovely our lass' (my mother)

'You look just like a big,fat lady sumo lady, mud wrestler' (my father)

She didn't buy them and he's still puzzled as to why!

Failedcrunchymum · Yesterday 10:18

I can't afford prescription sunglasses so I bought clip on, flip-up metallic blue sunnies, I knew DD15 would have something to say about them so I went with it. I told her flipping them up and down was cool in the 80s. She just said 'How?!'

I came downstairs in a very ordinary grey hoodie and blue jeans and was instantly labelled as " generic Pixar mum"!
All day! Even after I changed my top.

Teenage girls can be brutal!

What does that even mean?? (I'm feeling old!!)
