How do Brits view Latin people and culture ?

After some time living in the US…more and more people there seem to not like us Latin people.

So thinking on maybe stopping by the UK to move on and get a new experience there

However, not sure what to expect on culture differences, economy, etc

Who knows? Could maybe find the one in the UK lol. If there is any interest

This, as a Mexican you have nothing to worry about op, all I think of if you say you’re Mexican is the amazing food! We don’t have the anti Hispanic / Latino vibe here at all imo, at least I’ve never encountered it if we do, irl, online or in the media, it’s not a thing here. I’m aware of the Trump supporter attitudes towards Latino communities over there, but he is bonkers imo so don’t take anything he says seriously. Any negative views here are towards other groups / communities of immigrants (just Google small boats, grooming gangs, Turkish barbers etc for an idea).

My SIL is from Mexico, and she is lovely. I know she found it very cold weather wise when she moved here.She learned English quickly and is one of the friendliest warmest people I know.
Both my nephews speak Spanish fluently and are proud of their Mexican heritage.
How she fell in love and married my tall, pale, thin BIL is still a mystery to the family!

Well, you may be Mexican and not Spanish but, even being a little bit Spanish adjacent would probably get you much success in England, until at least the end of today....😁

We don’t view ‘Latin’ as a culture… we view the various countries (presuming you mean LatAm countries + possibly Spain and Portugal) as having their own individual cultures and a shared language and colonial history.

Generally if you’re asking for a stereotypical view of what Latina/o’s have in common - good food, passionate, good dancers, tanned and handsome (this one varies in extremity by country), happy but also too patriarchal, machismo is an issue and very Catholic.

There are plenty of Latin Americans in London, and a vibrant cultural scene, as well as pockets in other UK cities I’ve been to/lived in. I’ve spent a lot of time travelling, studying and working in Latin America, I love it.

Yeah you’re correct. The machismo is a big thing but that’s mostly from older generations.

So you’re American with Mexican parents? Generally speaking, the English don’t like Americans for a variety of reasons related to politics and culture. They will hear your accent and roll their eyes, but if you look Latino they might find you acceptable. It’s hard to know. Best of luck with your travels; more Americans should travel and experience the world.

But if you’re more open to equal relationships and you can bring her access to Mexican food then you’ll have a British girlfriend very quickly 😂 Also maybe open a good Mexican restaurant here because sadly most of the ones in London are mediocre and not authentic

Im interested why you regard the Spanish as your conquerors though? The majority of South Americans I thought were descended from Spanish conquerors. Or are you descended from native South Americans?
The Spanish and Portuguese colonised differently from the British in that they did it at the behest of the Catholic church, who encouraged marrying-maybe with consent or not who knows-natives and therefore converting their children to Catholicism. I have a Portuguesre surname and Portuguese ancestry, presumably from 500 years ago.

Don’t worry definitely open to equal relationship, especially after witnessing how terrible machismo is firsthand. It’s sad to live in when you’re a son watching from a distance.

Which actually won't go as well for you as being Mexican would. Stereotypes of US Americans are of being loud, brash, insular, ignorant and arrogant. Those are stereotypes though and of course people know that Americans who actually live outside America are often not stereotypes. In person the general dislike of Americans is usually quickly forgotten.

My friend who was married to a Brazilian, became my friend after, her and her husband became our neighbours! We have experienced many a Brazilian party next door, with his Brazilian friends! My Venezuelan friend had several parties, where I danced so much to Latin music (apparently I have good hip movement!), that my hips were killing me for a couple of days afterwards!! I used muscles I never knew I had! 🤣 You won't face prejudices in the UK towards you, like you would in the US.

Huh? "Hispanic" is still a common term in US parlance, just not for census purposes but ceetainly commonplace even in surveys. And contrary to what you say it's never quite clear whether actual Spaniards are even included in it. (Also, how about Brazil?)

Agree with other posters that "Latin" carries very different connotations in Europe, referring more to complexion, cuisine, and language. Which in the latter case probably should encompass even Moldavians.
