How do Brits view Latin people and culture ?

After some time living in the US…more and more people there seem to not like us Latin people.

So thinking on maybe stopping by the UK to move on and get a new experience there

However, not sure what to expect on culture differences, economy, etc

Who knows? Could maybe find the one in the UK lol. If there is any interest

Well central and south America contain many countries which all have their own history, culture, politics and challenges.

I don't have view on everyone from one enormous land mass. They're people. Most of which I've never met. Some good, some bad, some a mix of both I presume.

By Latin do you mean South American? Or actually maybe you’d include Mexican too. I’m not sure we’d use the term Latin (maybe Latin American?) as Latin people makes me think of Romans…

But I don’t have a view at all. I could probably articulate a stereotype based on US media I’ve seen, but I wouldn’t apply that to a South American person I met in real life (and actually would assume that that’s more of an American with South American heritage stereotype - so I probably would have different expectations over say an American with “Latin” parents vs someone who was moving from Brazil).

I literally don’t have a. Ore. I make my judgement on all people as I find them. Unfortunately most of the red neck areas don’t have that ability. My ex FIL is based in Denver and there is a big Latino population. I was just jealous of the bbq smells
at the weekend.

we don’t use the term Latin.

my dd does latin by which I mean she learns ancient Latin.

I don't think British people think much about it because we don't have proximity to South American countries, meaning there's nothing for politicians to make political capital from. .So there's no specific attitude against people from them in the UK.

Well in the US we are just added to the bunch! They don’t want to accept Mexico as an equal so we’re thrown aside. In this case I do say Latin guy because we’re called Latinos or Hispanics!

We can’t be called Spanish people because those are our conquerors. Spain doesn’t like us enough to share that title haha.

We’re all generalized as Latin people that’s why used “Latin people” in the sentence.

It’s interesting seeing how it’s different here than in the US though.

It's not like that here. If someone is from Mexico they are Mexican. Practically nobody uses Latino or Hispanic in the UK.

There aren’t enough here that people have any kind of general opinion.

I think part of the problem with answering your question is that it is only more recently that we have larger communities of Latino people in the UK.

SouthEast London is a major hub for Latinos with a growing community of Spanish and Portugese speakers in Tottenham. It's only now that people with proximity to those areas might start to develop generalisations and stereotypes about the communities. On the whole, I think people are appreciating the new restaurants but find the "Brazillian butchers" a little expensive.

In Europe if the adjective Latin is used it’s for the Latin countries - Spain, Italy, maybe France.

if you aren’t Spanish presumably you are Mexican/peruvian/whatever?

I’ve heard of the use in the us of Latinos but I’ve never really understood what group of people it covers.

Latium is technically the area just around Rome I think.

Totally agree, we might say that someone is Mexican or from Chile, but Latino and Hispanic are not terms that I've heard people using here.

I've heard it used by the communities I referred to in SE and N London. They use it to refer to Spanish and Portugese speakers who have direct links to S America opposed to those with only European and/or African links.

After the dirty way Argentina played against England, my opinion of their footballers is certainly through the floor.

It suggests the sense of fair play is weak and gamesmanship is justified as long as it leads to victory.

Not a great stance from a moral perspective.

How are you planning to come over to the UK? You do know you’ll need to be sponsored to get a visa yes? You can’t generally just rock up to see what it’s like…

Specifically, and fairly obviously if you think about it, we’re thousands of miles away from S America so don’t regard SAs as an immigration problem the way the US does, so noone will have any particular views.

Im interested why you regard the Spanish as your conquerors though? The majority of South Americans I thought were descended from Spanish conquerors. Or are you descended from native South Americans?

Argentina is one country with a distinct history from much of S America. Have you noticed that their team isn't very diverse compared to other S American countries?

Most Argentinians have only "been there" since the late 1800s as immigrants/colonisers from Europe. Mosy later than that. They wiped out all the indigenous people.

Everyone has explained already that it's not a term used in the UK and not a big enough immigrant group for their to be particular stereotypes of people from Latin America.

You might want to know generally about attitudes towards immigrants, which aren't fantastic atm.

More important though is how you expect to earn your living and where in the UK you want to live. You'll need to check whether your education and experience qualifies you for a work visa.

The Mexicans and Brazilians I've met casually at sports events always seem to be a lot of fun and friendly.

Funnily enough, I was contemplating a trip to Argentina at some point but I'm not sure about it now. A friend went last year and loved it, but after this last week, I'm not sure.

I think many S Americans have heritage from bith the colonisers and the oppressed/enslaved.

Were you born in the US OP? If so, we would consider you American ( ie from the US). There would be no particular stigma against you having Latin American heritage.
