Suddenly seeing lots of butterflies today. Anyone know why? It's cooler but I'm worried they are thirsty.

It's the warm weather that's bringing them out. Cold summer rainy snaps are not good for butterflies. They drink plenty from plants such as lavender that support bees and butterflies. There's such an abundance in my garden.

Interesting take from Dan Neidle

In May we said Nigel Farage probably didn't owe tax on his £5m gift.

The Guardian now reports the gift followed talks where Farage said he'd need £5m to return to frontline politics.

If that's right, we think there's a high risk of a £3m tax bill - payable by Reform.

This rather whizzed by me yesterday. But it's the worst possible news for Farage. If HMRC view the money as a payment for services and demand the tax due, Farage is rather going to have to open his books and correspondence. As will Harborne, potentially.

It's a shame Nadhim Zahawi hasn't (yet) joined Reform.

Yes, but I haven't seen any until today. I also dont have any plants so they're in the wrong garden!

He joined in January. Sorry if you were being ironic @SerendipityJane.

Robinson/Yaxley Lennon on X posted a picture of the suspect for the killing of Ann Widdecombe. Said something along the lines that the suspects face was the very example of a left wing fanatic.

The picture is 4 years old, taken in 2022. Daily Mail was the first to publish it.

And of course, all the language mentioned in that article is repeated on MN , and generally not ever deleted.

The protesters, who it is understood did include some locals, had marched into the playpark amid claims an adult male of colour had spoken to a girl

Dear god. Are we in 1960s American Deep South?

countrygirl99 · 18/07/2026 17:33

It's definitely a good year for butterflies. I do a regular transect for the UK butterfly monitoring survey and our numbers are definitely up this year. Highest weekly count so far this year up over 200 on last year. But wee are noticing different patterns. Ringlets have gone over quite quickly and gatekeeper numbers are very high. Also butterflies are being spotted in odd places. There have been a few reputable reports locally of purple emperors in gardens and they are a woodland species.

I wasn't, but am happy to show my ignorance here. Who knows, a bit more, and I could subscribe to Reform UK Ltd.

Shame Tommy ten names isn’t so vigilant with some his followers who have charge sheets as long as an arm for crimes against women & children.

Do people who have read a lot of history not feel slightly comforted by how familiar it all seems ?

dontcallmelen · 18/07/2026 17:46

Yy noticed a lot more butterflies, also a lot of bees which is very encouraging.

Despite washing and sanitising twice, I still managed to get a mother of vinegar in our shaker. (It reappeared after the first time)

I wouldn't mind, but when I dabbled in home brewing, there were a few posts on my forum of choice saying how hard it was to start 😀. Which given that I never once had wine or beer go sour, does make sense.

i Wasn’t sure what you meant Jane as my first thought was a big fat no, or maybe I had misunderstood your post I don’t always grasp some of the nuances.

Very sadly, it really does feel that way at times, yes.
