I thought it was £1bn.

It was. Purportedly to the NHS.

I am wearing my ‘Read Books, Walk Dogs, Fight Fascists tee today. This is Samson enjoying the beach at sunset.

Is that three cliffs bay?

PPE failures left NHS staff poorly protected and wasted billions, Covid inquiry finds

A lot of the criticism from Baroness Hallett relates to the terrible pandemic planning.

As we know staff that should have been working on pandemic preparedness were diverted to Brexit.

So Brexit stuffed us every which way.

Also notable -

"Of the 32 people who referred successful offers to the VIP lane, 15 had a connection to the Conservative Party and none were linked to any other party, although politicians from other parties did refer companies to the route."

Nick Robinson did a fairly good job to be fair. Jenrick is such an arse.

It is! Beautiful and very quiet for a nervy doggo.

Anyone up for a sweepstakes on the most tenuous subject to be posted about as an excuse to mention benefits ?

I'll have hosepipe bans - I can't see it getting any more fruitloop than that.

DuncinToffee · 14/07/2026 15:49

Telegraph has been shit stirring again, I didn't realise how much people love their hosepipe.

I wonder if this post will be deleted for quoting from the article ? Bearing in mind the video is still available on YouTube, as it's been incorporated into other videos commenting exclusively negatively on his behaviour.

Hertfordshire County Council has condemned “racist language” used by a former Reform candidate after recycling centres were closed due to heat.

In a since deleted video posted to social media, Tim Wheeler stood outside Rickmansworth Recycling Centre and questioned the need for it to shut because, he claimed, most of the workers “are African” who "enjoy the hot weather".

Mr Wheeler wore his Reform UK rosette in the clip and stood to be the Reform MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip in 2024 before running to be a councillor for Ruislip in May.

Was that the thread that mentioned people with blue badges and certain disability benefits have exemption from the hosepipe ban? I could see which way it was going so I exited backwards.

Oh no, it’s an even more overt one!

Telegraph has been shit stirring again, I didn't realise how much people love their hosepipe.

People my way are obsessed with power washing their cars weekly. I went to get petrol today and there was a queue for the jet wash.

He’s not a fan, but 8 take him out early for. Shortish walk then we stay on the cottage with a fan and a few pee breaks h til the evening, when we do a long walk. Up to the woods above the cottage tonight.

The reduction for entry fees to those on benefits to Chatsworth House was a surprise to me.

The National Trust nor English Heritage does that, though both offer discounts to those in caring professions, NHS - English Heritage has a blue light scheme.

Are you on holiday? Is the cottage on the farm? If so, I've stayed in one of them.

There's always a queue for the jet wash, which turns out to be dearer than going to the local 'Dave's hand car wash'. Caveat: other names are available.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2026 16:12

Meh. I just don't wash mine. Neighbours probably tut.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2026 16:14

I see the hosepipe thread now.

This is the second thread already! There was one last week where a woman's NDN was berating her for using hers. Thinly veiled benefit bashing ensued.

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2026 16:21

Bloody hell, the state of people.
We've always been misdirected moaners (England I'm talking about - the rest of you might be moaners too, I don't know) swallowing Ban Bendy Bananas Bullshit so we can indulge in a ruddy good whinge, but now its at Olympic records.

Or maybe its just MN.
I suppose I don't really see so much in the wild.

That thread was a paradigm into why "don't call us stupid" invariably fails with stupid people. Last I saw it, no one on team whinge acknowledged the repeated posts by grown ups pointing out that NT and EH - and all attractions - pricing has nothing to do with the government, and everything to do with commercial interests.

But then I can remember the "cancel the cheque" thread. Which can be added to the perennial "It's illegal to open someone elses post" canard.

MN bears only a passing resemblance to the wild. I've never thought otherwise. More fool anyone who does.

Quite apart from static demographics, I've been on MN since biscuitgate in 2009, when social media was a thing on the future scanning radar (along with Twitter and Internet of Things) and I was asked to report on it. So I've been here 17 years or an entire generation. Meaning whatever MN was then, it sure as hell ain't now.

BestIsWest · 14/07/2026 16:33

And yet we have lovely supportive, welcoming corners. Alongside this thread there are a handful that have kept me sane.

TemperanceWest · 14/07/2026 16:37

What was biscuitgate, please?
