Kentucky is a very strange place. I’ve been once, it being horse country and all. I had a deeply uncomfortable experience when taken for a dinner at The Lexington Country Club which I can only describe as an old plantation home where the customers were 100% white and the serving staff 100% black.
I also went out for lunch on a Sunday with a British ex-pat who called the waiter over at exactly 12:01 to order a drink, because alcohol sales were not permitted before midday on a Sunday. He was not a fan of the law!
Lots of conversations with people who felt compelled to tell me they were “blessed by the Lord” as well.
I also remember driving past what I can only describe as wooden shacks, like something from 100 years ago, that were obviously people’s homes.
Lots of very lovely people, an incredibly friendly state (to me) but I couldn’t help having an underlying feeling of discomfort.
