Wonderwall for our Anthem.

I reckon Wonderwall would make a great National anthem instead of the current dirge of God Save----.I can't stand football and watched the fans singing it and they were so passionate.

I can't undertsnd the logic here ?
Did those feet in ancient time is about the chance that Jesus did visit yes but so what ?
What is a national anthem ? It's about being proud of your country and jeruselem is it.
I say that as a fallen Catholic who fully rejects the faith !
Does the current anthem speak to anyone at all ?

Catholic’s don’t sing Jerusalem as it’s a patriotic song and they don’t consider it Catholic enough. We’re all about God and the Pope not England

( I've heard it at the occasional wedding though )

Yes.

How has this confused you? If you read the post, which isn't very long, the OP says instead of, " God Save..."

I don't know why she didn't write, The King and complete the title but surely- if you put your thinking hat on for a second-this big clue would have saved you from asking.

Just in case my post renders you puzzled, I'll tell you that the poster means England and is referring to the English national anthem, which is called, God Save the King.

HTH.

God Save the King isn't the English national anthem, it's the British national anthem.

HTH 😊

TooOrangey · 03/07/2026 15:01

Much as I hate our awful national anthem, this is a silly idea.

It should be Vindaloo.

So what? Some people won’t sing anthems, hymns and commemorative songs for all sorts of different petty reasons, political or religious or whatever. Any song would be rejected by some.

I commented because the person mentioned they had been Catholic
ie
its irrelevant to the point as Catholic’s don’t sing it anyway
if you rtt

But 'God Save the King' is the UK national anthem, not just specifically for England.

So just as the Scottish team use 'Flower Of Scotland', the England football team should really have something unique to England - perhaps Jerusalem, or Billy Connolly's suggestion of the Archers Theme tune.....

I read your comment in the context of the post you were replying to. I can’t see what point you’re making except that some people would refuse to sing Jerusalem - which is fair enough: nobody’s obliged to sing anything.

But that doesn’t make the song any less of a good choice.

Hilarous so some people say it's too religious and others not religous but patriotic !

It's just a song , a poem .
It should be our song

MaybeThisTimeILlbeLucky · 03/07/2026 18:33

@BrownTroutBluesAgain well I was raises on one side very large Catholic family and it was a common song at weddings and all the rest.

It’s not about the religious aspect for Catholics
its about England
No surprises historically Catholic’s have a bit of a problem with England and the Church of

I think she means for the sporting events when they have "Flower of Scotland"

I did indeed. It was extremely popular during the Euros.

Really
Thats interesting

It’s very much seen as an English ie Non Catholic song and was never sung in my schools or churches.
My parents would say…’ oh no we don’t sing that’ when my kids c of e school sang it at the Cathedral

So I googled and I’m guessing my U.K. churches we came within this group

‘ Restrictions: Some Catholic (and Anglican) clergy occasionally prohibit it. Some priests object because it contains secular, nationalist themes, mentions "swords" and "arrows", and is not technically a prayer directly praising God’

Do you know what Jerusalem is about? Its about Jesus visiting Cornwall with his uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a tin trader. I mean I love it as a hymn and a myth. I had it at my wedding, but as a national Anthem for a multicultural land? I don't think so. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35304508

Did they stay in an AirBnB?

Secretseverywhere · 03/07/2026 19:52

It’d be utterly bonkers tbh. I do think the is a UK anthem is awful but there must be a middle ground between current dirge and 90s pop anthem.

Choose a decent poem (there are loads) rewrite to have a catchy chorus set it to something uplifting think the battle from gladiator.

The Lion’s Green Domain
(Verse 1)
From Dover’s white and fractured stone,
To where the northern moors are blown,
She wraps herself in cloaks of green,
A quiet and defiant queen.
But in her breast, the embers glow—
A fire the heedless world won't know.
(Pre-Chorus)
Let tempests howl and tyrants stare,
Her blood is salt, her breath is air!
Through every age, she bares her teeth,
With iron soil and roots beneath.
(Chorus)
The ancient blood begins to roar,
On every tide, on every shore!
For England stands, eternal, grand—
A blood-bought, fierce, and sacred land!
The lion wakes, the valleys sing,
And to the heavens, we shall cling!
(Verse 2)
Her sons are forged of oak and grit,
Where lightning strikes, they welcome it.
No foreign drum shall ever break
The spirit of the fen and lake.
(Pre-Chorus)
Let tempests howl and tyrants stare,
Her blood is salt, her breath is air!
Through every age, she bares her teeth,
With iron soil and roots beneath.
(Chorus)
The ancient blood begins to roar,
On every tide, on every shore!
For England stands, eternal, grand—
A blood-bought, fierce, and sacred land!
The lion wakes, the valleys sing,
And to the heavens, we shall cling!
(Bridge)
For every drop of crimson shed,
A rose shall bloom where cowards fled!
So raise the banner, sharp and bright,
A soaring soul of blinding light!

(Chorus)
The ancient blood begins to roar,
On every tide, on every shore!
For England stands, eternal, grand—
A blood-bought, fierce, and sacred land!
The lion wakes, the valleys sing,
And to the heavens, we shall cling!

I feel like there’s a tv show in there somewhere set all the chosen poems to orchestral music and broadcast in a night at the proms style and vote for your favourite.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 19:57

‘Britains best anthem ! ‘ It’ll probably be hosted by Katherine Jenkins or Gareth Malone , with Cat Deeley to balance it out. I doubt that the King would be pleased with a new one though! Lol

I’m thinking given our colonial history this wouldn't go down well

Your right it is tricky but I didn’t think that poem was colonial. I’m sure a better one could be found or written though.

Just can’t imagine the sports teams having to belt out you’re my wonderwall.

That gets my vote

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/07/2026 22:12

I mean Land of Hope and Glory would be a bit controversial - maybe Farage and Co would like it? Better than Rule Britannia I guess!
Still no to Wonderwall though

I've never understood the love for Wonderwall. It's awful. It makes me depressed! I love Jerusalem though.

Yes for England. I think it’s a shame that the other nations that make up the U.K. get to have rousing anthems but any patriotism from England seems to have racist/ coloniser overtones so instead it’s a bit of a pisstake.

ValueofNothing · 03/07/2026 23:15

My favourite of the bunch is the beautiful I Vow to Thee My Country, but it's possibly not quite so easy to belt out at sporting events as Jerusalem.

Arlanymor · 05/07/2026 08:39

Dragonscaledaisy · 03/07/2026 13:17

It's certainly not 'spine tingling' in my opinion. There are far better national anthems than that one.

Edited

What a surprise, different people have different opinions. What a very bizarre choice to randomly come on here and just be disagreeable. And you're wrong.

Lentilcakes · 05/07/2026 08:50

I’d vote for Jerusalem too.
