Wonderwall for our Anthem.

I reckon Wonderwall would make a great National anthem instead of the current dirge of God Save----.I can't stand football and watched the fans singing it and they were so passionate.

OP posts:

Yes.

How has this confused you? If you read the post, which isn't very long, the OP says instead of, " God Save..."

I don't know why she didn't write, The King and complete the title but surely- if you put your thinking hat on for a second-this big clue would have saved you from asking.

Just in case my post renders you puzzled, I'll tell you that the poster means England and is referring to the English national anthem, which is called, God Save the King.

HTH.

What an incredibly patronising and factually incorrect post.

God Save The King is the United Kingdom's National Anthem, not England's. I presume the PP was asking for clarification as to whether the OP meant England or the whole of the UK.

Scotland and Wales do not use God Save The King at sporting events. IMO England should select a different song to represent themselves too. Jerusalem is often used as the alternative.

@DearMissMapp

What a nasty post from someone who doesn't know what they're talking about. See above if you don't know why you're wrong.

RaraRachael · 03/07/2026 11:57

It's a dirge so a no from me

This.

I do think our national anthem is dire. Also, King just doesn't sound right!

I love seeing the other countries!

It's because God Save The King is completely about one person supposedly above every one else in the country, whereas other national anthems are about the people of that country and pride in being that nationality all together.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 12:39

It’ll never happen, but who would pay the royalties for it every time it was used ?

MajorSamanthaCarter · 03/07/2026 12:42

I'd prefer Agadoo tbh.

Indeed. Although why England would choose a repetitive whinge for an anthem I don't know. I love Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau - written by an ordinary man for ordinary people. Best anthem in the world, it's spine tingling. Although I am also partial to a bit of Yma o Hyd as well.

FeliciaFancybottom · 03/07/2026 13:08

As if the Gallaghers aren't far enough up their own arses already!

Marmalademorning · 03/07/2026 11:54

Yeah, great way to turn the UK into a total laughing stock 🙄

You don’t seriously think anyone else gives a shit? And even if they do, who cares? Do we live our lives based on what other countries think of us? 🤨

Lemonfrost · 03/07/2026 13:11

minipie · 03/07/2026 12:07

I have no idea why Wonderwall is so successful, the tune is a dirge and Noel admitted he plucked half the lyrics out of thin air.

It’s so monotonous and dreary

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 03/07/2026 13:12

Fucking dire song.

Wonderwall ain't much better either.

iamfrustrated · 03/07/2026 13:12

Our national anthem should be land of hope and glory, or Jerusalem.

OutOfApricots · 03/07/2026 13:14

Land of Hope and Glory would get my vote.

Veronyk · 03/07/2026 13:16

I'd agree with Jerusalem. Works at the cricket.
And I love Blake.
I find the lyrics of God Save the King totally embarassing. And it's a dirge.

It's certainly not 'spine tingling' in my opinion. There are far better national anthems than that one.

Gotta be Jerusalem

Yes this!

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 13:18

Most countries seem to have dreary anthems.
I suppose many were written centuries ago and some only have music and no lyrics as well. I wonder who decided that each country needs one and a flag.

Blackcatahotcat · 03/07/2026 13:19

Be careful what you wish for. It could be Star Spangled Banner when The Donald takes over the world

Backedoffhackedoff · 03/07/2026 13:19

ChocolateSqueezyyogurts · 03/07/2026 12:14

I like Oasis and have been a fan since the 90s, but I really dont like this song. Nothing makes me cringe more than a group of people all joining in to a chorus of Wonderwall 🤢

Football fans singing anything is cringe, sweet Caroline is the most awful song (at least wonderwall is better)

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 03/07/2026 13:21

No
I don’t agree
Here’s the words
Why chose this song

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you
By now, you should've somehow realised what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now
And backbeat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before, but you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now
And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how
Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall
Today was gonna be the day, but they'll never throw it back to you
By now, you should've somehow realised what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now
And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don't know how
I said, "Maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall"
I said, "Maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You're my wonderwall"
I said, "Maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me" (saves me)

Gotta be Jerusalem

Defo

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 13:24

Sweet Caroline is worse. Not sure what that has to do with football really

x2boys · 03/07/2026 13:26

I mean anything would be better
Than "God save our king" its bloody awful so sycophantic .

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 03/07/2026 13:27

You could only have Jerusalem as an English national anthem, not to replace the existing national anthem which is supposedly for all four nations of the UK.

It does, after all, refer to England in the lyrics several times.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 03/07/2026 13:27

What about

‘I vow to thee my country’
Its a lit a bit more relevant to an anthem

“I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test
That lays upon the altar, the dearest and the best
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know
We may not count her armies, we may not see her king
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering
And soul by soul, and silently her shining bounds increase
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace”
