Wales rarely qualify (if ever? I don't follow football). I agree that pubs shouldn't be open in the middle of the night. Don't England often get to the last 16?

It depends on the opposition. Mexico are one of the top ten teams in the world, have won every match so far without conceding a goal and it's a home fixture for them, at altitude which will be very difficult. Plus there were far more teams in the competition to start with this time. 48 teams. When we won it there were 16 teams.

Plus some of their more twatty fans like to find the opposition team hotel and make a racket outside so the players can't sleep.

👋 Sending a wave to all other emergency services workers….as if Mondays in A&E weren’t bad enough…😢

This.

It’s not as if it’s the final and people don’t have TVs at home. I live near two pubs and it is going to be so noisy if they stay open. Also, why 5am? Kick them out when the game ends ffs.

I barely care about football at all but I certainly understand why it's better to enjoy a game in a large group with camaraderie than alone on your sofa with your kids asleep upstairs. There's no obligation to go to a pub if you don't want to and pubs already have an obligation to stop serving someone who has clearly not got the capacity to know their own limits

MickyMoonshine · 03/07/2026 08:26

I’m pleased they can open. The pub trade is struggling so any additional opportunity to increase business is a good thing. I really hope they’re busy.

I think that given it is a foregone conclusion that England will lose, perhaps the Gov want to help pubs eke as much money from the World Cup while they still can?

The same way Germany beating Paraguay (or Germany missing thier first penalty in 44 years in an international tournament) was a foregone conclusion? The same way Spain veating Cape Verde was a foregone conclusion? The same way South Africa beating Japan in the 2015 Rugby World Cup was a foregone conclusion? The same way Mike Tyson beating Buster Douglas was a foregone conclusion?

Boolabus · 03/07/2026 08:48

I am not in England but see no issue with it, I think it is what most countries have been doing for these games. Surely by 5am people would have drunk themselves sober anyway. I think the pubs will be trying to wake people up to get out rather then have to deal with anti social drunks

user293948849167 · 03/07/2026 08:49

Oh fgs it’s a one off thing, why are people so miserable on Mumsnet sometimes?!

No i won’t be going, I am Welsh and don’t like football.
I hope everyone who does go has a great time though and I hope the pubs make a good profit!

hereforthelolz · 03/07/2026 08:55

I don’t really get why they think EVERYONE will be plastered? We won’t actually go out until 12.30ish!

hereforthelolz · 03/07/2026 08:56

BathersOnTheLine · 03/07/2026 08:02

They don't help with the vomit you have to set over in the street, the smashed bottles everywhere or the kicked in bus shelters and cans and takeaway shite thrown over your hedge though.

Good god, where do you live? Magaluf?

I don’t think everyone will! But there will be a few who have been on it since lunchtime, on a normal day in my town centre people sit outside the pubs at 11am with a pint anyway so match day is even more an excuse

Matchday is Monday, they won’t start
11 am Sunday!

It’s 1am Monday morning so if people are going out to watch it they’ll start drinking on Sunday. Which is fine btw!

frozendaisy · 03/07/2026 09:23

It’s one match in a decade, longer, that is at an unsocial time.

TwilightAb · 03/07/2026 09:26

I think it's eally irresponsible of the government to be honest. A lot of people don't know what equates to a unit of alcohol let alone elimination rates. I wonder how many people will be drink driving the next morning and turning up to work under the influence. As well as has been pointed out, the rise in domestic violence!

In the event that it goes to extra time and penalties presumably. Fancy choosing to live near two pubs and complaining about the noise though.

Not at 11am!

Not at 11am!

Probably not 11am but some will have BBQs, mates over and just carry on all afternoon and evening at home!

At least in a pub the landlord can stop serving you!

This is a very good point.

Earplugs and eye masks exist. You have three days to get some.

Fuck that. Wearing ear plugs in your own home because of the drunk yobs out in the street at 3am? They’ll get a bucket of water over their heads. I hope England loses.

Springisintheairohyeah · 03/07/2026 11:21

Our local pub stayed open until 5am for the first Scotland game - we arrived at around 8pm, stayed to watch all the matches, got fed burgers at half time, walked home to the sun coming up and birds singing. My old self could definitely not hack that sort of late night on a regular basis, but as a one off it was a great atmosphere and no one was ragingly drunk

Misery guts at its finest 😂

SamAylward · 03/07/2026 12:19

None of the pubs I drink in are going to do it. Publicans need sleep as well, you know.

The couple I have heard are considering it will probably not open the following lunchtime.

Nah, Wetherspoons won’t be showing it!
