Oh can you imagine the states at that time 😬😆

I am not in England but see no issue with it, I think it is what most countries have been doing for these games. Surely by 5am people would have drunk themselves sober anyway. I think the pubs will be trying to wake people up to get out rather then have to deal with anti social drunks

Drunk themselves sober?? I think not!

BravasPatatas · 03/07/2026 12:44

No, I’ll still have to be up at 6.30am for work so no chance.

Rubyslipperswitch · 03/07/2026 12:50

Dreadful idea.

I feel sorry for the staff that will be made to work all night and it will just create antisocial behaviour and noise for anyone who lives near a pub and is trying to sleep.

Also emergency workers already have enough to cope with.

No idea why the PM thought football is a good enough reason to disrupt everyone's lives.

My point exactly. People dont understand units and elimination rates. You do realise just because you dont feel the effects doesn't mean you aren't under the influence and over the drink drive limit?

How is it a foregone conclusion?

Due to the location (altitude), home nation advantage, and Mexico’s previous stats.

Yeah it’s a dreadful ideas to give struggling pubs an opportunity to actually make some money. 🙄

I hope those that choose to open are
really busy. It’s tough for hospitality at the moment.

OutOfApricots · 03/07/2026 13:36

On a level of absurdity from 1-10, this goes all the way up to number 11.

No staff will be MADE to work. Most pub staff are on zero hours contracts, they choose whether to work or not.

BotterMon · 03/07/2026 14:26

It's ridiculous. The number of pissed people who will be driving on Monday is terrifying. However that will be the case whether they're down the pub or at home. We are not pub people and thankfully don't live near any.

I'm worried about the pissheads going home and battering their partners as would put good money on the team heading home on the first available plane on Monday. They don't have the fitness or experience to play at that altitude. They're also pretty useless bar one or two of them.

Blackcatahotcat · 03/07/2026 14:27

downloadtoad · 02/07/2026 22:51

This was my first thought too, the people that have been drinking since 12pm that day, no thanks !

12 midday? Hardly

I really wish people would stop blaming football for domestic violence. While I understand that DV does increase during football tournaments it also increases at Christmas, on bank holidays, during heat waves etc. Blame the abusive men. The fault lies entirely with them and nothing or nobody else.

The pubs being allowed to open is great for those landlords who are struggling in the current climate. They are also not to blame the actions of abusive men.

Some staff will also WANT to work.

Exactly. I work in a pub and I’d be more than happy working if asked. I will be watching it anyway so may as well get paid while doing so.

Matchday is Monday, they won’t start
11 am Sunday!

They did in Scotland
People literally sat drinking from when the pubs opened Sunday. 12/13 hours before kick off. There will be many who do the same in England. It's naive to think otherwise.

Good god, where do you live? Magaluf?

Somewhere where there is a Butlins.

BathersOnTheLine · 03/07/2026 15:06

howdoidoitalone · 03/07/2026 08:07

Christ it’s not going to be that bad 😂

It generally is.

Yikes101 · 03/07/2026 17:08

Blimey some of you live in some rough areas! Both of my local pubs are opening and are offering free food. I won’t be going, I will be tucked up in bed, but I don’t expect there to be any disturbance from them being open. I am pleased they’re able to open, they’re both really integral to the local community.

12 midday? Hardly

You’re maybe the 3rd person that has said that, do you people live under a rock? Do you not understand that loads of people will start drinking at that time because of the game?! Maybe they might be a certain kind of people but they definitely will! Have you walked past Wetherspoons on a sunny Friday morning?

OutOfApricots · 03/07/2026 17:56

It's at times like this that I'm pleased our local pub got demolished to make way for housing.

howdoidoitalone · 03/07/2026 07:05

I’m genuinely so glad I don’t live with the misery that a lot of mumsnet does.

It's not the final and even if it were, it's only one sport that a lot of people aren't interested in and it's a Sunday night (morning) and people have to go to work and school.

It's completely ridiculous. Once again, people who want to sleep are sacrificed on the altar of the noisy and inconsiderate.

Also given how MNers think it's terrible for the poor retail workers to have to work on a Sunday, why is it ok for pub staff to have to work until 5am? The only good thing is that it will be light by the time they have to go home.

Also worried about drunk people on the roads on Monday morning. People don't realise that they are still over the limit the morning after the erm morning before.

igelkott2026 · 03/07/2026 18:02

MickyMoonshine · 03/07/2026 14:31

Some staff will also WANT to work.

Also true of retail workers on Sundays but apparently that's not allowed.

Admittedly I doubt many of them get double time on Sundays and I assume pubs will pay their staff extra for working (more) anti-social hours (than usual).

SideboobToYouToo · 03/07/2026 18:03

It's a great idea, people can watch a one off sporting event in the pub.
I'll be asleep hours before as I'm not a football fan.

Why do you have to resort to personal attacks if you don't like what someone says?

Is it because you know it's true and you can't find any reasonable arguments to rebut it?
