Do people have purses any more? Why?

My purse used to be massively important. My cash and cards. Wouldn’t leave the house without it. I can remember the purse my mum had for years. Fat brown leather thing with a snap closure. Full of old vouchers and stamps and things.
I have had many purses in my life but now just have a phone and a single card. A few notes and coins in a bag I use sometimes. I have three adult children and none of them have a wallet or purse.
I do see people at the checkout putting their stuff away in purses sometimes though. Seems so retro!
I think if I had a purse I would carry around loads of stuff I don’t need. Just musing on one of the things that’s changed in my life as a middle aged woman!
So. If you still use a purse. Why?

Not had a purse in a long time. Tend to use a wallet for cards as no longer use coins for cash. Have had an RFID blocking wallet, but managed to leave it on the train! Or just use a bum bag (when out running say) and the small zip up part for a bank card (bank note) if necessary. It can be worth taking notes out. Recently I could only shop in Tesco with cash cos all systems were down. Same thing happened at a train station and in my local high street. I don't like purses either.

Yes, I still have one. Has my debit and loyalty cards etc, and cash.

newrubylane · 03/07/2026 17:27

Yes but only a mini one - card wallet sized, with a very small zip pocket for coins.

Where do they go? On my phone. It seems a faff nowadays to carry physical cards when they can all be stored in your Apple wallet. I can’t remember the last time I needed cash for anything in this country, it must be years ago.

Coffee shop loyalty cards can't go on my phone.

I last used cash in the cafe I went into at lunch time.
I will use cash in two different places I am going tomorrow - a fundraiser coffee morning and later a fundraiser Summer fete.
Next week I will use cash once when I get my hair cut and once when I get my nails done. Earlier in the week I used it when I looked round a volunteer manned museum, and I wanted to make a small voluntary donation. I will also use some to tip in to the donations box when I get a coffee at my local Church.

Okay? Thats very specific. There are many more supermarkets than just Aldi branches.

There are indeed, but all my local supermarkets require a £1 coin to release the trolleys - Aldi, Sainsburys, Tesco, Farm Foods, Iceland and Asda.

Yes, you could use a trolley token, but you'd still need somewhere to keep it.

I have a purse, well a couple. Whilst I have an iPhone I don’t use Apple pay . My purse has in it my credit and debit card and currently £60 in cash and a couple of loyalty cards

tillyandmilly · 03/07/2026 17:37

Nope - haven’t had a purse for around 5 years - got a couple of cards which I keep in case apple pay doesn’t work on the bus!

I have a purse, it’s only little, it has my driving licence, bank card and whatever cash I have in. I very rarely take it out with me, only if I think I need cash which is usually only for the hand car wash. I usually just take my phone, keys and Vaseline, in my pocket if I’m wearing jeans or a bag if I really must, if I can get away with no keys then that’s preferable.

Olive567 · 04/07/2026 07:52

But where do people keep their house keys when they are out? Hardly anyone (with or without a purse) is mentioning their house keys. Mine live in my purse. If i do go out without my purse I have to keep them in my pocket which feels more insecure.

My purse is like a survival pack
Wallet and all its bits
First aid stuff
Mini sewing kit
Snacks
Water bottle
Sunglasses
Wet wipes
Anti bac gel
Pen and paper
Flashlight
Latex gloves

I'm ever ready

In the UK that's not a purse it's a handbag.

The OP means a purse which just contains money and bank cards

I would have to put my reading glasses on to pay for stuff on my phone, whereas I can see physical bank cards/store cards in my purse!

Iliketulips · 04/07/2026 08:44

I've got a purse. It contains various debit/credit cards, store discount cards, a permanent discount voucher for local coffee shop, cash for emergencies/parking, driving licence, emergency numbers and some photos of DD growing up.

Not if you've got face id, double click on the side button, look at the phone, hold it to the card machine, job done.

Mine are in my handbag next to my purse! There's no way 4 house keys and a car key are going in a standard size wallet or purse.

I have a purse with some cash and all my cards in it.
I've no idea how to, or wish to pay for stuff with my phone.

Absolutely this ^

My keys consist of three yale type, one mortice and a car key, there’s no way that’s all going to fit in a purse. If I am going out without the car and not to either work or my allotment I will take a single house key on a separate keyring but still not put it in a purse, more likely a pocket. If no pockets I’ll take a bag.
