Do people have purses any more? Why?

My purse used to be massively important. My cash and cards. Wouldn’t leave the house without it. I can remember the purse my mum had for years. Fat brown leather thing with a snap closure. Full of old vouchers and stamps and things.
I have had many purses in my life but now just have a phone and a single card. A few notes and coins in a bag I use sometimes. I have three adult children and none of them have a wallet or purse.
I do see people at the checkout putting their stuff away in purses sometimes though. Seems so retro!
I think if I had a purse I would carry around loads of stuff I don’t need. Just musing on one of the things that’s changed in my life as a middle aged woman!
So. If you still use a purse. Why?

I have a small wallet but don’t carry it about. I only take my phone.

The wallet has my library card, gym card and driving licence in it as well as a debit card. I never have any cash.

DressOrSkirt · 02/07/2026 22:17

I just have a cardholder. I used to have a few purses (still around somewhere) and would use different ones with different bags. Now I just have one black cardholder that goes with any bag, or just fits in my pocket if I'm lucky enough to have them!

I did scale back to phone plus card, but sometimes the card fell out. I have Apple pay on my phone but sometimes need cash to give my kids, go to carwash, etc, so I carried a little card wallet and a change purse. Occasionally need a card for things like parking. So in the end I went full circle and treated myself to a zip up Orla Kiely wallet which I love! Everything in once place and no worries about forgetting library card etc.

I am 50 and would not describe myself as modern.

My purse is about 5”x3” it contains a little cash, bank card, driving licence, access card, cash & carry membership card, bus pass, credit card, local theatre/cinema membership.
I don’t want my cards on my phone and I like to tip in cash.

Okiedokie123 · 02/07/2026 22:26

@DewDropsAndCobWebs As someone who takes a well prepared bag everywhere I go, I am impressed at your ever ready preparedness. I can’t think of a use for most of your list in my life but i still like your list!
You are howler talking about what we Brits call a handbag. A wallet is traditionally what a man uses to carry money and a purse for women.

user593 · 02/07/2026 22:28

If I want to take cash out with me, which I do on occasion, I take my purse (I have three), which contains my cards and any physical loyalty cards I have. Also, if travelling I would take a purse to keep foreign currency in.

Ninetysixdegreesintheshade · 02/07/2026 22:29

I have a small purse for my cards, and I always have a small amount of cash in it. I pay for most things with my phone but I know how often card readers go down so I like to be prepared.

AliceMcK · 02/07/2026 22:30

Yes, I’ve only used a coin purse for years, has my cards, drivers license and cash in it. I will occasionally use my phone to pay for things but I get so much brain fog just looking at my phone in public it sends my head spinning. My DH added my Tescos card to my phone and I got overwhelmed trying to click between my cash card and club card. I’d rather just carry my key loyalty cards in a small purse. I very rarely carry bags just my phone and little purse I can fit in my pockets.

@Dellaandthedealer

Not exactly luxurious.
Water is turned off in the winter so you have to flush with buckets of water, breaking ice on the wster butts if necessary

CoastalCalm · 02/07/2026 22:35

I have several and despite best attempts I still end up with cards and any cash in the zip part of my handbag

PreparationIsKey · 02/07/2026 22:40

I have one. I don't leave the house without it. But I don't use apple pay or anything I'm old fashioned

hahabahbag · 02/07/2026 22:42

My cards are in my phone case (wallet style) and a £10 is tucked inside it just in case. I never really use case

YorksMa · 02/07/2026 22:42

This is so interesting. It never occurred to me that some women don't carry a purse any more. I definitely do.. it's got cash, all my credit and debits, drivers licence, various loyalty cards, stamps, receipts etc. I'd personally never rely on my phone as I let it run out of juice too often!

ImogenBrocklehurst · 02/07/2026 22:49

I bought a beautiful red Mulberry purse a few years ago, which now lives in a drawer at home, replaced with a tiny card holder which holds my emergency debit card, thirty quid in notes, a fiver or so in coins and my driving licence. That come with me if I’m going anywhere long distance, but a trip to the supermarket or somewhere local is just my phone, my keys, and a token for the trolley.

AgnesMcDoo · 02/07/2026 22:50

I do. But it’s becoming obsolete. I mostly use it for storing expenses receipts before putting on a claim to work.

Denim4ever · 02/07/2026 22:51

Handbag - contains lipgloss, keys, tissues, cards, purse, phone, charger, a pound coin, glasses reading and sun.

Purse has lanyard, work stuff and a bit of cash in it. So more a method of containment than vehicle for money or cards.

NB charger goes everywhere because I was once overnight in A and E with my Dad and didn't have a charger.

socks1107 · 02/07/2026 22:53

I’ve got a purse, has my gym card, driver liscence, and bank card. Don’t often use it but handy to have it when I need it

My purse is like a survival pack
Wallet and all its bits
First aid stuff
Mini sewing kit
Snacks
Water bottle
Sunglasses
Wet wipes
Anti bac gel
Pen and paper
Flashlight
Latex gloves

I'm ever ready

I have that kind of stuff in my bag, rarely carry a purse though as hardly have cash

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/07/2026 22:56

My purse is a large Mulberry one. I also have a card holder. Sometimes I just take the card holder with me.

howdoidoitalone · 02/07/2026 22:57

My mum has one.

I have a card holder that I think is in the bottom of my bag. Has my driving licence in it.

I'm a bit like this, plus I only ever have one payment method on my phone and don't store cards in a pocket on my phone case as I've noticed a lot of people do

Planting · 02/07/2026 22:59

I dont own a purse and i dont own a handbag either.

ConverselyAttired · 02/07/2026 23:01

I have an Oliver Bonas card holder with about 3 pound coins in it (for supermarket trollies/random school non-uniform days), my debit and credit card, and my driving license. You can add major loyalty cards on your phone, and for those that you can't you can just take a photo and scan the barcode on that. Keep them in a folder within your photos.

I couldn't carry no cards. Sometimes my phone battery is at 20% or less when I'm on the way back from work and need petrol or some milk. One of the petrol stations here is pay at pump but you put the card in.

Miranda65 · 02/07/2026 23:03

I have a fairly chunky wallet - various payment cards, plus loads of different membership cards, driving licence, bus pass etc. But no money, as I pretty much never use cash.
I'm not ready to put payment cards on my phone, because of the hassle of it being lost or broken.....it's literally like putting all your eggs in one basket!

mmmtika · 02/07/2026 23:19

I do, but it rarely comes out with me. Generally only need my phone and some emergency immodium, just in case 🤣 but if I have a bag I will take it, most important thing in it is my rail card.
