Do people have purses any more? Why?

Icanseeasquirrel · 02/07/2026 20:18

My purse used to be massively important. My cash and cards. Wouldn’t leave the house without it. I can remember the purse my mum had for years. Fat brown leather thing with a snap closure. Full of old vouchers and stamps and things.
I have had many purses in my life but now just have a phone and a single card. A few notes and coins in a bag I use sometimes. I have three adult children and none of them have a wallet or purse.
I do see people at the checkout putting their stuff away in purses sometimes though. Seems so retro!
I think if I had a purse I would carry around loads of stuff I don’t need. Just musing on one of the things that’s changed in my life as a middle aged woman!
So. If you still use a purse. Why?

I usually take mine out with me, it has debit cards, loyalty cards, membership card, an emergency contact card for my pets, spare change and a spare house key. I dont use my phone to pay.

Besides I love my purse, its even gotten compliments!
Its shaped like an art deco copy of The Great Gatsby.😊

You have a £1 coin for a shipping trolley on your phone? Wow, they really do everything now.

If someone gives you, as I got at Christmas and my birthday, physical gift cards, how do I put those onto my (non-Apple) phone?

How do you put your driving licence into your Apple wallet?

You don't need a £1 coin. Loads of charities give out free key fobs in the shape of a £1 coin. If I need a trolley then I also need my car so mine lives in the glove box.

Neither do you need an iPhone. I use a Google wallet on my android. Nectar card, gym card (30 quid a year cheaper if you use a digital key), football NFC pass for when we get tickets, and all my supermarket loyalty cards. My last Costa gift card was a digital one, emailed to me.

76evie · 03/07/2026 10:52

Nope I don’t have a purse. I have a card wallet that has my cards and driving license in but I rarely take it out. I use Apple Pay on my phone for everything, nearest petrol station is pay at pump only & you need a card, so I go to the one a mile away and pay via their app.

I still sometimes carry a handbag but I’ve noticed with my late teens/early 20s children that not only do they not have purses they don’t really carry handbags either. Maybe a small one on a night out and then that’s mainly to put a power bank in!

Yes I have one, most of my bank cards are in it, I keep one separately with my railcard and work pass.

It also has cash, library card, various loyalty cards and my driving licence in it.

What is the £1 for a trolley thing? None of the supermarkets I might go to have this. It must be regional. But I’m mostly an Ocado girl as I’m too lazy to go to actual shops if I can help it.

My director gives me a M&S gift card for bdays and Christmas, but they are digital and go straight to my email. No physical cards.

And your question re my driving license made me realise I have no idea where mine is. Probably in a drawer somewhere. Not sure why I’d need to take it out? Then I remembered it’s on my gov.uk app as I have used this to share it for work.

gingangirly · 03/07/2026 11:53

Yep. Has my loyalty cards, credit cards, cash and photos in it.
I have no financial stuff on my phone because (being old) I am risk averse and if I was to be mugged they’d take my phone, not my handbag.

I haven’t seen a supermarket requiring a physical coin for their trolleys in years. The majority of them are unlocked these days.

You also haven’t needed an Oyster card in well over a decade.

UniquePinkSwan · 03/07/2026 12:02

My purse is at home with all my cards in it. I use my phone for everything

Edited

Our huge Tesco still requires a physical coin.

I prefer using Oyster than either debit card or phone. The latter two are worth someone snatching, the former not.

Daffodilsinthespring · 03/07/2026 12:05

My purse is always in my bag. I keep my cash and cards in it. Where else would I put them? I pay cash for lots of things as I buy all my elderly parents shopping and they pay me in cash.

my 30 year old dd also uses a purse.

I have used Aldi all over the country and every one I have used has needed a coin for their trolleys.

You are storing your oyster in a purse and taking it out every time you need to tap in or out so there’s no more likelihood of someone snatching a debit card vs the purse you have everything in and take out regularly to access.

You prefer a large purse and carrying around a load of dated loyalty cards, that’s fine, but your post was complaining that there couldn’t possibly be another option than carrying all these things around and there is.

Okay? Thats very specific. There are many more supermarkets than just Aldi branches.

MercifulRelease · 03/07/2026 12:18

I stopped using cash during the pandemic and never went back. I might withdraw £50 once or twice a year for a Chinese takeaway as ours only takes cash, but that's it. I have a beautiful Strathberry card holder which has my bus pass, emergency CC and my debit card in case phone payment fails, but that's it.

Can't believe I used to use cash so much, filthy inconvenient stuff that it is!

Oh a few shops have £ coin trolleys where i live Aldi, sainsbury and home bargains all have trolley slots.

Meadowfinch · 03/07/2026 12:31

I've just peered in mine and have:

  • 1 x debit card
  • 1 x credit card
  • driving licence
  • work security swipe card
  • some UK money
  • some Euros
  • RAC card
  • business card for a local window company who are quoting me for some work

I sometimes work on a secure site where mobiles are not allowed so change for the canteen is essential. And our Tesco still requires a physical coin.

I'll add £100 in notes later so I can pay the hair salon tomorrow. Increasingly, businesses are asking for cash to avoid bank charges.

Growlybear83 · 03/07/2026 12:46

I still have a collection of purses and never go out without one. I keep all my cards in it - debit cards, cash card, credit cards, shop loyalty cards, library card, leisure centre cards, and various school ID cards. I also have my cash (notes and coins), receipts and bits of paper I need to keep, and stamps. I can’t imagine not using a purse. Edited to add tjst Ive just looked through my purse and have seen my Covid vaccination card 😆

OutOfApricots · 03/07/2026 14:05

I don't use my phone for much, and certainly don't do online banking on the thing.

Yes I have a purse, and it contains actual cash in notes and coins (fond of a car boot sale and you can't pay for a 50p book with an app), trolley token, RAC card, debit card, Tesco clubcard, a variety of other store loyalty cards, my English Heritage membership card (and DH's as well because he'd lose it otherwise), RHS membership card, several lottery tickets, a photo of my dc, sometimes a postage stamp or two, and a couple of Piriton tablets.

Apileofballyhoo · 03/07/2026 14:16

I've never had a purse, always a wallet, but usually have a couple of cards and cash in my phone case. I haven't carried the wallet regularly for years. I was never much of a handbag user either though. Wallet and pockets. In Ireland you are supposed to carry your driver's licence so that's in the phone case with one debit card. I use cash quite a bit for small purchases here and there; I don't want it to disappear as an option from society and I don't feel I want to support bank charges for everything I buy whether I'm paying them or the seller is.

MirrorMirror1247 · 03/07/2026 14:22

I do. I'm 39 and still use cash quite a lot of the time, things like food shopping and fuel do get paid for by card though. I just don't feel right having no cash on me at all. It's also a handy place to keep my driving licence, bank cards and loyalty cards. If I go out for the evening I do put cash, ID etc in a smaller purse though.

Sounds like you are in the USA?
Your “purse” is a UK handbag.

A UK purse just holds cash & coins, a card or two maybe & some postage stamps or depending on size, maybe something else you might need.

A UK purse gets carried in our handbags.

Cards are often quicker than the apps, so many people prefer to use eg a gym card, store cards etc. Plus lipstick, tissues etc.
