Do people have purses any more? Why?

My purse used to be massively important. My cash and cards. Wouldn’t leave the house without it. I can remember the purse my mum had for years. Fat brown leather thing with a snap closure. Full of old vouchers and stamps and things.
I have had many purses in my life but now just have a phone and a single card. A few notes and coins in a bag I use sometimes. I have three adult children and none of them have a wallet or purse.
I do see people at the checkout putting their stuff away in purses sometimes though. Seems so retro!
I think if I had a purse I would carry around loads of stuff I don’t need. Just musing on one of the things that’s changed in my life as a middle aged woman!
So. If you still use a purse. Why?

So. If you still use a purse. Why?

Keeps everything together and saves having to hunt around in different pockets of my bag.

Front door key in zip pocket. A bit of cash - notes and loose change. Sometimes postage stamps and any till receipts I need to keep. Debit card. Co-op card. Part used gift cards if I have any. Think I might have a couple of coffee shop loyalty cards in there too.

NeedWineNow · 02/07/2026 23:54

Yes I always use a purse and have several in various sizes. I’ve also got small card holders if I’m carrying a small evening bag for example and just want to have a couple of cards. I always carry my driving licence for ID for example.

yes I’ve got my Barclaycard on my phone but that is backup in case I lose my purse.

JustGiveMeReason · 03/07/2026 00:08

I use a purse.

Why ? Because it serves a useful purpose.

What is in it? Credit card, debit card, couple of notes (cash), some coins, couple of loyalty cards for coffee shops, couple of supermarket loyalty cards, and paracetamol.

Just phone and keys now for a quick errand. For work, I have a backpack and it holds all the things that used to be in my handbag. I can’t remember the last time I carried cash. I’m middle aged.

But I accept that if my phone gets snatched I am helpless! I don’t even know anyone’s number..

This is what scares me. I have recently got into the habit of using my phone but couldn't solely rely on it. What if it didn't work/battery died/got lost/stolen? You could be stranded with no means of getting home.

I just use my phone with an emergency £20 note in the back of the case, although it does occur that the most likey need for the £20 is that I've lost my phone!

I have a little barrel thing on my keyring with a £20 in it for exactly that reason!

I don't want to use my phone to pay so yes, I still have a purse and I love it. It contains all my various cards and I won't be getting rid of it. Most of my friends still seem to have one also.

Olive42 · 03/07/2026 04:31

i have a lovely green Mulberry purse that was a present but unfortunately don’t use it anymore as it feels too big. I might reinstate it soon. I like being old school. 😆

Day to day, I use my phone with Apple Pay and all my loyalty cards etc… are in my Apple wallet. I was born late 70s and still feel a bit strange using it for some reason. It’s very convenient and quick (mostly) but there’s something slightly soulless about it too. I have a cardholder which I almost always have with me with back up cards and about £20 in case tech fails. 😆

At my DC’s school, they still insist on coins for the children to pay for small fete purchases etc… just so they learn to use coins. I like that.

snowymarbles · 03/07/2026 04:33

I still tend to take you’re…..all very well to just use Apple Pay but (as happened to someone at work) what happens when you lose your phone and then have no means of getting home…….

HoraceCope · 03/07/2026 04:56

i have a purse for my coins
and a purse for my cards

HoraceCope · 03/07/2026 04:57

agreed about the phone worry though, i forgot my phone, i dont have apple pay but i have recently started to keep my bank card in my phone, handy but worrying at the same time

sorryIdidntmeanto · 03/07/2026 07:06

Debit cards, stamps, driving licence, membership cards, receipts, vouchers, cash. It means I can leave my phone at home.

Zanatdy · 03/07/2026 07:46

Not had a purse for a decade or more. Now I use apple pay but have a card in back of phone incase, rarely use it.

Olive567 · 03/07/2026 08:32

All those who don't use a purse, how do you carry your keys? I have purse for cards, cash, keys, ID, to keep receipts for work, loyalty cards etc. It is quite big so I do often pop pop out with just bank card or some cash and keys in my pocket. Hate being reliant on my phone so don't use it to pay day to day though have started to use it for train tickets.

DeanElderberry · 03/07/2026 08:52

I use cash when shopping, and keep it and cards in my purse.

And as a poster upthread said, a watch.

ExquisitelyDressing · 03/07/2026 08:53

The phone going flat or being left at home by mistake thing isn't a problem if you've got an apple watch because apple pay syncs with it and you can add train or other tickets to the apple wallet and they're on the watch too which works even if offline to your phone. Means you don't have to get your phone out at busy ticket barriers too. But I do still carry a card most of the time. I also have cards for my parents accounts (power of attorney) and don't put them on apple pay because they are the same bank as me and I'd probably click the wrong one.

Lomonald · 03/07/2026 08:57

I do yes, i still use cash and card and rarely use my phone for payment when out, i have a card wallet if I an going "out out"

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 03/07/2026 08:59

I do! It's got money, cards, bus pass, Boots card etc; there's a picture of my daughter, emergency plasters, receipts for things I've sent (until I know they arrived) and hair pins and elastics.

I use a small purse - I suppose it's more like a card holder with a small pocket. I use this item, because I still use payment cards instead of Google Wallet. I also carry a physical driver's license and social security card instead of keeping them digital on my phone. I don't like putting my entire life and data on my phone and in various apps, that's why I use physical cards still. I also carry plastic tokens/coins for supermarket carts in my purse pocket.

Nannyfannybanny · 03/07/2026 09:04

Yes,with Faraday protection.. debit, loyalty cards, drivers license, cash. A lot of places want cash. Why.....my DD went out last week as usual, debit card in the pocket, dropped it, not the first time , huge problems then ensue.

pinkspeakers · 03/07/2026 09:09

I own a purse that has some cards and a little cash in but I keep it at home and only carry my phone. It means I know where those things are when I need them (rarely!). If I do take any cards/cash with me then I just put them in my pocket or a pocket of my handbag. In fact, the most common reason to take a bank card is that I want a means of payment but not the bulk of a phone (eg going to pub and not wanting to carry a bag). I'm slightly baffled by people carrying around bulky purses these days.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 03/07/2026 09:11

The only one I carry is the one for holidays, some places still prefer cash. I do keep an emergency tenner in my card holder. Dh still carries a wallet. Never has any money though.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 03/07/2026 09:11

I still have a purse with a bit of cash in, cards as backup and the odd membership card that doesn't go on GPay. I don't have my work corporate card for contactless use on GPay either. Have really needed it on holiday too in a country where cash is still king.

I don't carry keys. We have a keybox at home for the front door key (though tbh I rarely have to use it as someone is usually in when I get back). For work I have one small light plastic tag that I keep in my work bag/pocket.
