Come and tell us your dull and unexciting news 36: Calmly through the day

A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

I saw a bird a couple of weeks ago that looked unusual. I looked for it in my British bird book with no luck. Yesterday there was an article in the news about this rare bird near to where I had seen it.

Themidnightcuppa · 05/07/2026 04:18

Oh wow, I didn’t realise this thread was still going, I was on one but would have been years ago now when I first joined mnsnet. Soooo much has happened and mnsnet has been a huge source of daily friendship and support during difficult times. No idea what my username would have been.

woke about an hour ago at silly middle of the night o’clock and been scrolling while having tea and toast and listening to my dog snoring, the birds have started the dawn chorus and I’m heading back to bed.

I have two Eufy’s hoovers, The first is called Fred and was sent to live upstairs after I got Ethel (both have googly eyes stuck on by me, Ethel has fake eyelashes too). I got Fred as looking after a poorly DH I didn’t have time to hoover, Ethel came after DH passed and I had surgery and couldn’t lift Fred to empty him. My friends think I'm mad. The downside is that recently I realised my house is full of cobwebs as I no longer hoover with a stick hoover and reach up and hoover them up so the Dyson stick came out yesterday and I’ve been madly looking for cobwebs. DGC will be tasked to do a cobweb hunt tomorrow and be rewarded with 10p’s for every one they find. Hopefully won’t cost me too much, ha ha.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/07/2026 04:37

I'm very happy to see you here, Midnight! 🤗

We're just having strawberry froyo here and I've added choc chips to mine. Sunset will be at 9:19pm.

MissConductUS · 06/07/2026 11:24

I'm glad you found the thread again @Themidnightcuppa. I had no idea so many of us had multiple vacuum cleaners.

Sunday was pretty laid back. It finally cooled off here. We couldn't do our weekly FaceTime meeting with DD and DSiL, as they went to California for the weekend to attend a wedding and were still traveling back to Georgia last night. DH, DS, and I went out to an early dinner, then watched a bit of telly (Shark Tank) before DS went home. I had the French onion soup, a large crab cake, and a small Caesar salad for dinner, and they were all delicious.

Shark Tank is an interesting show. People who want investors for their businesses give presentations to a group of wealthy investors, who, if they're interested, compete with each other to secure ownership if they think the business is going to do well. It's quite entertaining, and some of the products are really interesting.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark_Tank

I'm off in a bit to have an appointment with a GI specialist I haven't seen before. I was originally told it was a two-month wait to see him, but my regular gastroenterologist got me in within a week. Funny how that works. They actually offered me my choice of two appointments today.

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 07/07/2026 18:04

The new specialist was really good. He spent about 45 minutes with me, going over my history with the condition, discussing all of the medications I've tried and failed on, and reviewing my most recent test results. He was also very respectful and a good listener. He's going to move me to a new medication, another biologic that I haven't tried before. I should be able to start it in about a week. Fortunately, I can take it at home with an autopen injector.

We've had 4.38 inches of rain in the last two days. It's cooled things off considerably, and we did need it. I've heard the heat dome has arrived in Europe. We'll probably spend time at the pool this week once the clouds move on. The rest of the week is forecast to be sunny with high temperatures around 29 C.

I've never seen this Silvergrass plant in our side yard get this big. And our wild raspberries are starting to come in. That's just one large bush by the garage. We have them around the front garden as well. They should be ripe in a week or two. I love them, but picking them is a lot of work.

Good news Miss. Keeping my fingers crossed it works for you. 💕

DC are watching a kids' programme.
I'm lying on my bed. So. Tired.
Had us up at 7 and out the door just before 9 to get my mum to a med appt. I have my own appt across town at 1pm.

Just read something on another thread that made me lol:
Parkour? Is that Japanese? It's not sexual, is it?

The spider thread is also good today. 😁

HildaTablet · 08/07/2026 08:33

We have the original of Shark Tank here, @MissConductUS - but ours is called Dragon's Den. The same format, though. I don’t officially watch it but I've seen enough of it to know there are many weird and sometimes wonderful ideas, and some pitches can be hilarious/cringe-making. A few have found investors and gone on to be highly successful.

DH and I have come away for a few days and it’s significantly more pleasant weather-wise up North where we are, thank goodness. Still warm - in the 20-something degree zone, but not the awful 30+ the South-east is experiencing once again.

MyrtleLion · 08/07/2026 17:11

I forgot to watch the thread, so I’ve missed you all.

Had my hair done today. Three appointments tomorrow including an ECG so I can get ADHD medication and accompanying my DSD to her PIP assessment. She is very worried and I have to let her sit with that because it will increase the visibility of her disabilities, but it’s so hard when I know she needs reassurance.

12234m · 08/07/2026 17:14

This is my first post on one of these threads and I intend to read as much as possible.

My lovely new friend came and did some work on my porch today, after I was let down by three tradesmen. He wouldn't take payment but I've left two bottles of wine on his doorstep - he was out - as he did agree for me to buy him a bottle. Had to be two! He's been a star.

12234m · 08/07/2026 17:17

Re shark vacuum - If it's still in the five year guarantee you don't have to purchase, you get the parts for free. I was sent two and when that still didn't solve the problem they sent me a brand new vacuum and I was allowed to keep the spare parts.

Themidnightcuppa · 08/07/2026 17:26

it’s 32 degrees here here just 22 miles from London. The dog I are in the lounge that I managed to get down to 20 this morning at 6am but is about 25 degrees now.

i’m supposed to be baking a birthday cake for a grandchild, but the way things are going I won’t be starting it until about 10 pm tonight when the temperature has dropped considerably. Or possibly, I will get up at 4 am and make it tomorrow.

Went to the large shopping centre today, not realising it doesn’t have air-conditioning, but it was reasonably cool in most shops. Found a couple of nice cotton dresses which will hopefully keep me cooler.

MissConductUS · 08/07/2026 19:49

Welcome, @12234m, and thanks for sharing your porch repair and Shark news. How did you meet your handy new friend?

@ThemidnightcuppaIt's 31 degrees here, so almost the same. I think waiting to turn on the oven makes sense. I think we'll just do some pork potstickers (dumplings) in the air fryer for dinner, along with a salad.

DH spent a couple of hours at the town pool this morning. It was lovely, but the water is still a bit cold for swimming. It's only five minutes away, so it's very convenient to pop over there.

OP posts:
Themidnightcuppa · 09/07/2026 08:49

Started baking around 8pm last night. Four sponges and two ice cream tubs full of icing now in the freezer.

I went to bed about 2 am having made a what is supposed to be a 3-D goose to go on top of the cake. But when I’ve come down this morning, the neck has collapsed somewhat and it looks like a cute duck instead. 🤦‍♀️ fortunately the birthday child’s mother thinks it’s rather cute anyway which is rather lucky.

I was up at 4 am, closing all the windows as the lowest temperature was 20°. Slightly cool in the house but rather glad that the dog is going to kennels later that are air-conditioned.

12234m · 09/07/2026 17:36

@MissConductUS I met Mr Porch Saviour when out with my dog and I stopped to admire his garden. Today I've painted the wood that will go on the roof but sadly my alarm has started malfunctioning again and I can't work out how to turn it off for good.

Poor dog wants me to turn the heat off. Even the fan isn't enough at the moment for her.

Umanresources · 09/07/2026 17:39

Welcome to the new people. I love hearing about everyone else’s busy-ness. I’ve become obsessed with my Apple Watch. I didn’t see the need for me to have one, as I am practically housebound now, so no counting steps! It does count me getting up from my chair and reminds me to keep moving, but I’m in awe of my sleep pattern. It actually counted one evening when I dozed off while watching television (I swore I was only resting my eyes). Apparently I am averaging 4hrs 44mins of sleep this week. I seem to sleep in periods of an hour and a half, awake for an hour, another hour and a half and repeat!
I’ve started a new topic on my monthly art course. It’s based on Van Gogh and I’ve really been enjoying it. I was sitting and drawing (copying) some trees yesterday when I dozed off a few times and my pencil added a few extra marks. I’m blaming the heat as well as tiredness.
Had a lovely visit to the dentist 🙃 (apparently that is the sarcastic emoji!), just one filling and a clean and polish. Payment was the most painful part of the visit. My PIN number wouldn’t work, but I don’t remember changing it. I worked out that the last time I used my pin was in 2019.
Also had a visit to the Diabetic Eye Screening Clinic a couple of weeks ago. Got the results yesterday and I have Stage 1 diabetic retinopathy in my left eye, which means no problems now, but possibly further down the line. My OH stayed in the room with me during the test and said he was quite worried when I could only read the top two lines of letters on the chart, with my left eye. I said I could actually only read the top one, which was very blurry, but I’d memorised the next row after reading it with my right eye. Oops.
@Themidnightcuppa I loved your cute duck story, it’s like the ugly goose changed. I think you and I had the same sleeping pattern last night. Only I didn’t do anything creative, I just read for a while.
It’s 29°C (84°F) here, outside and in and I have 2 fans going, one of them about 9 inches away from me. It’s on the lowest setting and feels lovely. It’s forecast for 33° tomorrow, so the fan might be on a higher setting. It’s rechargeable and lasts for 13 hours on one charge - I sound like an infomercial now.
Hope the appointments went well @MyrtleLion . 💐
That pool sounds very enjoyable @MissConductUS. I miss being in the water. We used to go and stay with family who had a pool; it wasn’t a huge one and I used to walk up and down in it, while I was reading. Both the DC learned to swim in it and we loved it.
@Mumtobabyhavoc hope you are managing to get some sleep as well. You are having such a busy time lately.

LBFseBrom · 09/07/2026 17:39

I did not have a cup of coffee today.

LBFseBrom · 09/07/2026 17:39

I did not have a cup of coffee today.

Living on the edge today? 😬

We could smell a bit of smoke last night, likely coming down from the Kamloops region where a wildfire is.

Managed a load of laundry this morning which I've just hung up. Need to hustle now and get ready to take my mum to med appt.

MissConductUS · 09/07/2026 20:11

Welcome, @LBFseBrom, and thanks for sharing your dull coffee news. Are you completely caffeine-free or did you have some tea instead?

midnightcuppa, if you were up baking until 2:00 AM, your handle is well deserved. Please post a picture of the goose/duck cake if you have one.

Uman, I am also obsessed with my Apple Watch, and my sleep tracking statistics are also very depressing. I had no idea that I was waking up that often. The pool is lovely. We didn't go today because we're under thunderstorm warnings again. I posted pictures of the pool on the last thread, but here they are again. The town recreation center also has a volleyball court and a miniature golf course, but we haven't tried either.

I think we'll get a takeway tonight rather than cooking.

That is so lovely!

MyrtleLion · 09/07/2026 22:05

Normal ECG so hopefully will get ADHD meds in the next few weeks.
Volunteer meeting, managed to get it kicked down the road lad by a month and enough research that it won’t happen till 2027.
DSD was fine in the PIP assessment and felt it was an enjoyable experience 🙄
Having spent nearly five hours in her company, I opened the white wine immediately we got back. She is lovely but tiring.
But… I think it went ok and I hope she gets the award.
Moawr wine…

Umanresources · 10/07/2026 00:03

@MissConductUS that pool does look inviting. I’m hoping to take my grandsons for a game of miniature golf when they come here in August. My daughter and one of her friends decided to go to a beach this evening because today has been so hot. When they got there they sat in the car and ate pizza. They couldn’t see the sea, because of the cloud.
@MyrtleLion Cheers. Enjoy your wine. I wouldn’t mind one myself now.

I think tonight might be one of the worst nights I have had to do .
It is currently 23 ..but feels like 25 .
But there is not a breeze !
Nothing .(well apart from my fan !!)

No drop in temp , no coolness, no AIR !

bizzey · 10/07/2026 01:59

I think I am going to put some fake tan on my legs , lie very still on my bed , and pretend that I am sunbathing on a beautiful beach somewhere (I don't care where !) ...

And then wake up with streaky brown legs 😂😂😂

MissConductUS · 10/07/2026 10:32

midnightcuppa, that duck is adorable! I love the hat. You are a very talented baker.

Uman, that beach looks completely fogged in. The pizza looks tasty, though, so it's not all bad news. I've just had a look at the weather forecast for London. The high temp today is expected to be 30 C, which is quite warm, but not as bad as it's been recently.

bizzey, I hope there are plans to install more air con in the UK, at least in time for next summer. I think the warmer summers are here to stay.

It's just half five here, so I'm up early. I've fed the cats and will go for a walk in a bit, then later DH and I will do our weekly grocery shopping. We're expecting a high of 30 C today, so we might go back to the pool.
