Come and tell us your dull and unexciting news 36: Calmly through the day

MissConductUS · 01/07/2026 18:01

A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

Oh Hilda it's great to see you and I love knowing you are one of the originals! It must've really helped having the thread during the height of the pandemic. I read it in its entirety as well as all of thread 2. 😂
Sorry about your arm! It sounds like it was horrendous. 😮💐

Wide awake here at almost 12:30am. Lots on my mind dealing with medical for my mum. 😔
I might take half a sleeping pill at this point. 🤔

HildaTablet · 03/07/2026 08:47

Aaah, sorry you’re sleepless, @Mumtobabyhavoc. It's so all-consuming worrying about a beloved parent (been there). I hope you manage to grab a bit more shut-eye.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/07/2026 08:59

Thanks. 💛
I'm her medical manager, so I make 90% of the decisions and speak with all the doctors etc.
I've learned to write everything down, though, and keep a notebook. Today was frustrating.

Lovely to see you back @HildaTablet Sorry about your arm.

Great to have your DS back @MissConductUS

Sorry its hard with the medical management of your Mum @Mumtobabyhavoc

Done 5 hours cleaning of house and gardening today. DD is back tomorrow for a short visit which will be lovely, she's spending almost all the summer in Oxford.

MissConductUS · 03/07/2026 21:07

Fab to have you back on the thread, @HildaTablet! And we both have two Miele vacs!

We seem to be approaching the end of the horrible heat here. We had massive thunderstorms all night and again today. It's extremely humid outdoors, but we ha e turned off the AC.

The police have attached No Street Parking signs to the trees closest to the nearby main street, and there are barricades leaning against the lamp posts all ready to be put in place for the Fourth of July parade.

I've had the past week off work and the coming Monday morning is a prospect I'm not looking forward to.

MissConductUS · 03/07/2026 22:06

Math, it's 104 F here today, and tomorrow is supposed to be the same. On Sunday, it should get cooler. We have not turned off the AC. In fact, you would have to pry it out of my hot, dead hands. 😂

Some towns here have postponed the celebrations because of the heat. We're going to stay in. Neither DH or I are huge fans of fireworks, and the crowds are always huge.

I'm sorry you have to go back to work on Monday. Do you see yourself retiring in the next few years?

Penguinz, it's lovely when they come back to visit, isn't it?

We were thinking about cooking out on the deck grill, but it's too hot to be out there for any length of time. A few weeks ago, we were having dinner out and I had a wonderful lobster ravioli special. We asked the restaurant owner where he sourced them, and he told us about a local artisan pasta maker we were completely unaware of. I think most of his sales are to local restaurants, but he has a small storefront and sells to the public. He also makes his own pasta sauces. So we've been having the lobster ravioli at home with his vodka/cream tomato sauce, which is excellent. And that's what's on the menu for tonight, along with some ciabatta rolls and a salad. I wish we didn't have to boil water for the ravioli, but they only cook for three minutes.

Happy Independence Day to all those celebrating tomorrow!
Busy next 2 weeks before we go away - so much to think about. DS1 is coming too but doesn’t get back from his trip to Northern Europe until next Thursday, six days before we go. Will probably have to help him with the washing……
Annoyingly have to go to to work too!

Pengane · 03/07/2026 22:49

Today I’ve had a few practical issues on the go.

I went on the Bosch website to look for a spare-part fridge-door hinge, as ours is broken. It asked for the model number of our fridge and I discovered via google that it’s often where the “crisper drawer” is. So I pulled out the vegetable drawer, and there was a label on the fridge wall with the required information. I was then able to locate the correct hinge on the website. I’ve forwarded the info to our landlord and he’s helpfully going to order the hinge.
Our central hob burner isn’t working, and hasn’t for about 5 months, since the hob was installed! The tradesman who did the job has told me today that he’ll come next week to install the replacement. We shall see…
Our newly-installed extractor fan (about 2.5 months old) is regularly dripping oil onto the hob below. The electrician who did the job is saying that it must be our cooking. I disagree as our cooking habits are well within normal parameters. Another electrician agrees that what’s happening isn’t normal , so he’ll be coming to the house to check the installation. The landlord has agreed to pay the call-out charge.
This afternoon a desk for my daughter was due to be delivered. I was told by Argos between 5.37pm and 7.37pm (how precise!). I received a text at 6.41pm telling me “Gilbert is about 2 minutes away with your order”. Unfortunately Gilbert did not arrive, so I phoned Argos at 7.06pm. The advisor phoned Gilbert, while I waited on the line, and she advised me she’d left Gilbert a voicemail. At 9.21pm (21 mins after the delivery window) I received a text informing me that “Gilbert is about 15 mins away with your order.” Unfortunately a minute later another text came through apologising that they haven’t been able to deliver my order today. I got on the phone to Argos shortly after and, having rearranged delivery for tomorrow, I enquired whether I’d been given a refund of the delivery charge. The advisor responded that I would be. I’ve received an email confirming the same.
It’ll all go here!

I found £5 I'd forgotten about in an old handbag Grin

This is supposed to be for dull news but I’d find that really exciting! 🤣😍

Sort a pre diagnostic thing like smears and Mammograms .

Had to go up town.
Should have been an easy journey.
Signal failure everywhere changed that !

Still ..got some photos for you all.

Some are especially for babyhavoc ..not the mum ..of ..havoc !
The little one 😂😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/07/2026 06:39

Bizzey, are your trains usually busy? Are they popular transport? We are still stuck to our cars here.

I had the kids out all over town this evening: two places we went to were a Harley Davidson dealership that has a mini museum of old motorcycles on display from the outside and a donut and fried chicken shop called Cream Pony.

I decided today I’m going to buy a cordless vacuum for quick whizz rounds instead of lugging the plug in. I’m very excited to choose 🤣

bizzey · 04/07/2026 15:21

@Mumtobabyhavoc ..that was an unusually empty carriage on the northern line from Goodge Street
The old stairs were Goodge Street as well

It still has the old carriages with the doors between each carriage .
You can open them (not tried for years !!) and move between carriages while the train is moving !!

Now ..the carriages of the tube just flow through as one.

The train back from Waterloo to my station did get busy as there had been a signal failure earlier.

I got on the platform.
Train was there ...doors closed..

I stood in front of the doors so when they opened ..I was on !
I got a lovely seat .
It got very , very busy as the journey went on.

bizzey · 04/07/2026 15:28

Wise Choice. I have a stick cordless and a handheld cordless, in addition to the two Miele canister vacs. DH says I have a hoovering compulsion. 😂

Havoc, what's the dipping sauce with the fried chicken?

Bizzey, it was on the news here that a lot of trains in the UK were out of service due to the heat.

It's going to be cooler here today, with a forecast high of 34 C, so DH and DS are going to do a traditional 4th of July dinner - mac & cheese, with burgers and hot dogs cooked on the grill. We'll go out to dinner Sunday night before DS heads home. He lives about 45 minutes away.

Here are pictures of last night's lobster ravioli, in the package and plated with the vodka sauce from the pasta shop. And I have my first zinnia blooming in the deck planter. For comparison, I've included a photo of how they looked on 9 June.

I am watching TV and finishing the third square of six in a monthly knit-a-long. It’s cables of different varieties and they are all about 39cm square.

bizzey · 04/07/2026 17:07

Ohh gosh ! I am so sorry, .I forgot the date today !
Happy happy day for my new friends 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸.
(Well to be honest ...you are my old friends now seeing as we have gone through births , deaths and weddings together ..and lots of other stuff 😁😁😂)

MrsSPenguinz · 04/07/2026 17:32

Have a wonderful 4th July @MissConductUS and @mathanxiety

DD will be back shortly and will be lovely to catch up. The cat is excited.

Just been sorting things today. Very hot here next week again in the 30s.

BubblesandFairies · 04/07/2026 21:24

Talking about trains I met a lovely lady today who told me in some countries public transport is free for people who live locally. You have to use it a few times a month to keep your entitlement but so many more people use it so I guess they have more regular services.
I am not looking forward to your heatwave coming over to the UK, looks like by Thursday we will all be sweaty messes 🤣

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/07/2026 23:46

Miss, I think it was aioli. I was distracted with the dc when I was ordering and asked for the non-spicy one. The chicken was so good! They deep-fry chunks of breast meat only now. They used to do a variety of pieces, but have changed their offerings. The breading is peppery and very good. The menu says homemade lemonade and iced tea, but they use a mix now (I asked). Anyway, it was good and the kids loved the treat.
Your pasta looks good, btw. 😋

Bizzey, lovely pics! I really like the way the pub has decorated for tennis. 🤗

Where are you from @BubblesandFairies ?

Sorry, forgot the States' holiday today.
Happy 4th. 🩷

Heart-breaker for us re the soccer. Good game, though. 🇨🇦😩

Baby is napping. Havoc is restless and wants to go out. My mum has retreated to her room.
I've got the France/Paraguay game on.
No idea what to make for dinner.
It's mostly sunny, a bit breezy and temp
is 21c.
