A quiet and friendly corner of MN to share the very dull day to day happenings of our lives. No criticisms, political discussions, or controversies here. Think of it as neighbors (I'm a Yank) chatting over the garden fence or having a cup of tea while the kids play together. Everyone is welcome.

It will be calming for all.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I spent a fair bit of time living not far from Liverpool and I have a pet theory that the Scouse accent owes a lot to Scandinavian languages, which is hardly surprising as it’s a major port city and that coast had a lot of Viking activity.

Once I was watching the (brilliant) Scandi drama 'The Bridge' and a Danish character said - in Danish - 'do you want a cup of tea?' DH and I fell about laughing because it sounded exactly, and I mean exactly, like someone from Liverpool saying that phrase in English. The inflections and slurring of words are uncannily alike. That’s my contention anyway!
(Liverpool and Manchester accents are both 'Northern English' so broadly similar-sounding, though locals would distinguish between them)

Umanresources · 19/07/2026 17:42

My accent is very similar to our new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham. He’s from just a few miles away. I have met and spoken to him, he is very handsome. We have northern accents, more Manchester than Liverpool. There are only 16 miles between Liverpool and Manchester, but the accents are very different. My grandsons in Lisbon have Mancunian accents when they speak English. It’s very funny to hear them.
I agree @HildaTablet about the Scandi accents sounding like Liverpudlian, which also has similar food. One, in particular, is lobscouse, which is shortened to Scouse, the nickname of Liverpudlians. Towards Manchester its shortened to lobby, which my grandsons think is our family’s signature dish.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobscouse is an interesting read.

Hope you had a nice lunch @MyrtleLion

Sorry about air quality @MissConductUS I also had an email saying new credit card would be sent, very helpfully telling me within the next 2 months if I was eligible.

Sorry you are super tired @Mumtobabyhavoc I hope you can get some rest. You do so much looking after your family so well.

@Umanresources Glad you had some gorgeous food. The football match wasn't so popular here with French DH. I am always glad when England are out so the pub is quiet again.

My DH cannot understand Scottish accents and I have to translate when a Scottish company calls him. Felt under the weather yesterday, just a coming back from holiday thing, but feeling half better today and did an hour and a half's cleaning of downstairs with DH. We are having a Sunday roast, the cat understands and always trills at that. One time DH suggested not doing a Sunday roast and he got told off by the cat so he made one.

MyrtleLion · 19/07/2026 19:33

It was OK. DNiece whose birthday it was decided not to come. She has severe anxiety. But I also think she has been overindulged. We used to travel to their part of the UK and them to us, but she refused to come so we compromised last year to meet in the middle. We saw her twice and now she can’t come any more.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/07/2026 19:46

The it's about to starrrrrt! 🇪🇸⚽️🇦🇷

Notellinganyone · 19/07/2026 19:47

I bought a glass water bottle with a spring lid to keep in the fridge so can have cold water.

MrsSPenguinz · 19/07/2026 20:27

Just had the Sunday roast and then chocolate brownie ice cream. DH is watering the garden then will watch the end of the football match. I would imagine everyone in the UK is supporting Spain.

beeble347 · 19/07/2026 20:31

Hi everyone! Just spent the early evening picking blackberries from the garden with my toddler while DH was weeding. Can't believe they're £3 in supermarkets when they grow in so many public places for free! Feeling very lucky though.

Tomato and potato plants are doing/have done really well, same for lettuce. But broccoli and courgette seems to be a miss this year, they've fruited/flowered but barely. I only started growing things in containers for the first time this year so quite happy with that bit of progress, it's all a learning curve!

And we're off to see a Julia Donaldson adaptation in the local theatre this week, looking forward to it but it's over toddler's normal lunchtime so I may be having to sneak him non messy food to keep him still. First time taking him and he's 17mo so we'll see if it's wholesome or stressful!

BrickBiscuit · 19/07/2026 20:38

Got followed by a police van in my car today. For about five miles, along an obscure urban route with some unusual turns. I took to indicating a bit late, to see if they'd leave indicating until I did. They did so. I wasn't concerned; I wasn't doing anything wrong and the car admin's up to date. Unless they've seen what's in my distant MN history?? Then I took the 'wrong' lane on a roundabout and switched back to my turn-off lane, ending up behind them. They kept going ahead of me and sped off.

Penguins, is there a UK/Argentina rivalry?

Watching here. Managed to get back from my mum's medical appt at the 70m mark. 😅
Have got it pvr'd though.
How was the half-time show?

MrsSPenguinz · 19/07/2026 22:34

It's to do with the Falklands and them refusing to accept the Falklander Islanders wish to remain British. And the Hand of God incident in 1986. People have moved on but the Argentine banner is an issue and a threat of war to Falklands maybe?

Umanresources · 19/07/2026 22:45

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/07/2026 01:24

So, I've now googled. 🤓
Paul Hollywood is from a suburb of Liverpool and the tv commentators are Danes that played for Man U. The accents are similar. The guy I worked with was from Manchester.

I think I might have nailed it. 👂
Any locals want to weigh in?

I was wondering if the commentator was Wayne Rooney who played for Manchester United but was from Liverpool. I think Paul Hollywood has quite a posh Liverpudlian accent! He is from the Wirrall which is quite an upmarket part of Merseyside, rather than Liverpool itself.

Of course. 🤦‍♀️
I googled as well. 🙄

Welcome @Notellinganyone, and thanks for sharing your shopping news. I love a cold drink of water too, and keep a Britta Pitcher in the fridge for the same reason. I also have a vacuum-insulated steel water vessel for ice water on the go. Post a link to the glass bottle with the spring lid if you like.

Welcome, @beeble347, and thanks for sharing your gardening and other news. My tomatoes are starting to come in, but my lettuce is past its prime, I'm afraid. And well done with the blackberries. I'm picking wild raspberries at the moment. Good luck with taking your little one to the theater.

Welcome, @BrickBiscuit, and thanks for sharing your somewhat concerning encounter with the police van. I don't think they connected you to your old posting history on MN, but you never know.

This is leftover artisan pizza from Saturday night. The triangular pieces are a standard "meat lovers" pie, with meatballs, Italian sweet sausage, pepperoni, and (streaky) bacon. The rectangular pieces are from a New York pizza called a Grandma:

https://www.sipandfeast.com/grandma-pizza/

The tomato sauce is made from San Marzano tomatoes, which have a noticeable sweetness. Both types were delicious.

We are going to see The Odyssey at 7pm. In a cinema. For the first time in over five years. It’s been so long that we have never been to our local cinema as we only moved here five years ago.

MrsSPenguinz · 20/07/2026 20:43

Enjoy the cinema @MyrtleLion

There was a surprising amount of pizza in Sri Lanka and very nice especially the vegetarian as they grow so many vegetables and cheap, about £6 for a large pizza.

We have spent the day working on the garden in preparation for our shed being taken down. We moved the two mini beach hut stores that we painted into place and added things from the shed to both. Then cleared a bit more in the shed and cleared lots of leaves from the garden and watered it as still no rain here. Its surviving pretty well, am lucky I chose a lot of lavenders who are fine in very hot weather.

DH then has been cutting down the overgrown plants in the bit of lane nobody seems to own but we need cleared so they don't need to go via the garden to take the old shed away as it contains asbestos in the roof. I was cleaning 2 weeks worth from our holiday of cat fluff off the upstairs carpets and also grooming the cat - I may have made a whole new small cat with all the fluff.

Been talking to our neighbour and she used to work in Chengdu in the 1980s and she mentioned that a sparrow hawk is around and has killed blackbirds and pigeons in her garden so we need to be careful with the silkies. We kept them in today. I heard a commotion in our garden about 6.30am and a pigeon flying off looking panicked so it may have come in our garden. The silkies are never out at that time but another high risk time is late afternoon when they normally are out. Luckily its not so hot this week and low 20s.

MyrtleLion · 20/07/2026 23:18

It was amazing. We saw The Odyssey. I utterly recommend it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/07/2026 00:15

It is getting such good reviews, Myrtle!

Hi 👋👋🤗..
Asking here as I don't want to start a thread ...
But are those bobble remover things /machines good ?
Do they really work ?

I see so many adverts for them .. thinking I do not need that ..now I am thinking 🤔 🤔 🤔..maybe !!😁🐥.

I did more work in mams garden tonight.
@MrsSPenguinz ..I do not know how you and your DH can do 3 plus hours doing gardening !!
Hats off to you !! 😁.

I did about an hour and a half .

And that was having dosed my self up on painkillers first !!.

Trouble is ...once you start ...there is always more to do !

I don't even know if I am doing it right !😄😄😅😂.

Still..
Water is going into the soil ..

So that is a start ..😁😁😅
Pulled of dead looking things and dead heads .

Cut other dead looking things.

Put mulch down.
Spread it around.

(Untangled my hair from everywhere I spread the mulch around.)

Ohh and watered !!

Holiday day -1
I’ve done no packing.
yesterday, I taught At The Wi Craft day. I was also involved preparing a lot of the lunch as well. Normally we get everyone to bring a dish of food and not quite sure what happened this year, but I’ve definitely overdone it and must remember not to do the same again next year.

I’m looking forward to the holiday. It will be a chance to relax and just breathe for a week. Some of the grandchildren are coming for part of it and we are planning some lovely days out and I’m looking forward to that. I’m hoping to take them to a maze of maize. The smallest one is quite short. I’m a bit concerned about losing her.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/07/2026 07:58

Oh my god Midnight, I just remembered taking Havoc, at around age 2 1/2 to a hedge maze and having a panic attack trying to find the way out. I had no idea I would get freaked out like that, but I did.

Good for you getting into the garden Bizzey.

I've just put a pot of tea on with three tea bags to steep overnight. I'm planning on iced tea tomorrow with mint from the garden.

Tie a helium balloon on a long string to her?

MrsSPenguinz · 21/07/2026 09:00

Glad film was good @MyrtleLion

Thanks @Bizzey Well done on getting your Mam's garden done. I only had a tiny garden when we lived in London and have been surprised how much work a bigger one is, and we are in a village where most people have perfect gardens and are retired. I do love doing it though so does DH and keeps us fit. I've never used a bobbler.

Enjoy your holiday @Themidnightcuppa

Iced tea sounds lovely @Mumtobabyhavoc

I am waking up very early still as Sri Lanka was 4.5 hours ahead of us but DH isn't waking until much later. I have my bedding on to wash. The cat was very happy I was up around 5am so he could have his breakfast.

I think DH is planning on clearing the rest of the lane today so they can take our old shed with asbestos roof out that way rather than via garden. It should mean both green bins will be full but they are being collected soon so that's fine. I'll probably watch Below Deck on Hayu. DHs alarm has just gone off. He will probably just put it on snooze repeatedly.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/07/2026 09:30

Ahhh still watching Below Deck, Penguins? 🤗 I watched during the pandemic, iirc. It's a soap opera isn't it?! 😁 I really got into it!

I am stupidly awake. Overtired now.
Going to line up some podcasts. 🤷‍♀️
