Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

MN gets more and more po-faced by the day 😂

Of course YANBU OP. I would be sniggering too.

Po faced....yet op's the one wanging on about "the rules" and not liking being made to look bad because shes not gone in the office 😂

Are you doing badly at work? It isn't normal to be this bitter.

This.
"Serves them right." ???
I guess the crystal ball was out of service and they were unable to see transport chaos later in the day.
Maybe working from home wasn't the best option for some?
a/c at work?
no quiet place at home?
Some people prefer to go in. 🤷‍♀️

Love that stretch for you…I’m a senior director in a professional role who got promoted a year ago….

A senior director .... which an attitude like that..! I seriously doubt it.🙄

ChillingWithMySnowmies · Yesterday 18:44

i think the people being vile to the OP for being a bit gloaty that people that have gone into work against advice, spent the day being smug about it, and have now come undone and are suffering the consequences, maybe ought to consider that they aren't being ANY better than the OP.

KilkennyCats · Yesterday 18:44

Half my family have just come in after tubing it home 🤷🏻‍♀️
They went into the office for the aircon and considered it worth the journey.

impartialusername · Yesterday 18:44

maybe some people can’t actually work from home? Not everyone can with children or family around and not enough space/privacy/setup etc?! This expectation to work from home actually pisses me off. It’s not possible for everyone.

No @Loveaghost

No, you are not. We know that. You know that.

My dog just said she knows that too 🤣

It’s not karma. They have a boss who values presenteeism and no doubt makes that clear despite what the official guidance says, effectively giving them no choice but to face the commute or face their disapproval. I think you feel this way towards them as you felt their presence in the office was actively showing you up for staying home, and that’s because your work place culture clearly sucks. Why not focus on what a horrible hypocrite the big boss is rather than gloat at your colleagues’ misfortune?

But out of about 50 of us in this team. 5-6 went in. The rest of us were more than comfortable staying at home. Our overall company were clear to stay at home.

No, po-faced as in completely unable to lighten up and have a laugh - everything has to be so serious and formal and nobody can be giggled at because they did something stupid and are now suffering the cosequences.

In that case the 5 or 6 weren't sucking up to anyone if over 40 stayed home.

They probably just found working in the office easier.

A senior director would be concerned about their staff, not rubbing their hands with glee at the idea of them passing out or throwing up from heatstroke on buses.

What a fucking weird thing to be gleeful about

This

You sound deeply unpleasant OP

Not everyone can work from home due to set up, privacy, space and in my case terrible heat today.

Loveaghost · Yesterday 18:47

Passingthrough123 · Yesterday 18:36

Nah, being gleeful about people being stuck underground in 45 degree heat still makes you bitchy and horrible.

They’re not stuck underground ffs. Don’t be ridiculous

But it’s not working. It’s literally headline news on the tv right now. Saying over and over ‘do not travel on public transport in London. Its a danger to life.’

Yet they did.

And I know this handful of colleagues well. They all have perfectly good houses (we work in quite an affluent industry) and worked from home over Covid with no issues. They’re not coming in because they have to. They’re coming in and finding excuses to post photos of them in the office on bloody Teams ffs!

So they made a decision to come in.
It is still pretty bitter and twisted to call it Karma.

Perhaps you need to find another job with colleagues you like?

QPZM · Yesterday 18:48

I suppose the OP is going to claim to know everyone's home set-up and living conditions too.

I mean she is a senior director afterall.

A senior director would be concerned about their staff, not rubbing their hands with glee at the idea of them passing out or throwing up from heatstroke on buses.

And wouldn't be posting about their multiple managers.

So they're all still in the office waiting it out? You didn't say that, so some could've tried to get on the Tube.

But what's ridiculous is you, as a so-called senior director, being overjoyed that your colleagues are suffering in the worst heatwave for decades.
