Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

Wind rush, Mildmay and Weaver… I moved out of London ten years ago and these are unfamiliar to me. Have never been on the Elizabeth Line. Does it have aircon?

wrinklycactus · 24/06/2026 19:03

Unpleasant post taking delight in other people's discomfort.

I mean, I don’t actually say these things at work. I reserve it for an anonymous forum like MN. It’s good to get it off my chest!

And I actually get on really well with said senior boss. I just ignore his presenteeism wants and do great work!

So in the next senior management meeting you’ll be pointing out the consequences of an attitude of being in the office at all costs on colleagues who were faced with very difficult journeys home during high heat?

Domestic violence
Lack of money for gas/electric
Anti-social neighbours
Tiny, cramped living conditions

Just a few reasons why those 5 - 6 people may have gone into the office.

But I suppose you're going to tell us it's not the case for any of them 🙄

I already did upthread. At least read my posts. We work in an affluent industry and these people all live in nice suburban homes. I’ve seen the inside of them on virtual calls over the years many times.

They certainly are not short of money or nice housing. Domestic abuse obviously I can’t say but 3/5 of these people were men.

Tbf when you have a boss like that its hard to deviate from what you know they would see as a negative.

"Unless essential" is subjective. One can argue not wanting to piss off your manager and mark your cards in some way, however small, is essential.

You sound pretty immature to be gleeful about this.

Oh stop it!!! The little toadies went in on specific advice not to.

But hey @Loveaghost do you think they will go in tomorrow???

Have you looked at the news?

You're quoting that while at the same time laughing at your colleagues having to get on 50 degree replacement buses?

A senior director would be horrified at the culture her senior colleague had created, and working to resolve that, not gleeful that staff who felt obliged to work within it were having a miserable day.

Honestly? Probably not as then I’ll just be highlighted as an issue won’t I?

Is everyone fully set up to WFH? Even in some offices that routinely OFFER fully remote, hybrid, and ad hoc telecommuting, not everyone is equipped to do it on short notice (or at all). Some people may be working around a telecommuting spouse, young children, construction noise, dodgy home internet/outages, etc. and that might play a factor in addition to the possibility of being "suck arses".

OP has stated she knows everything about these peoples houses (even thought she now says they're not her direct staff) and they absolutely could work from home. She said so.

Lol, you think domestic violence shows up on Teams meetings or are you saying no-one in a nice house could possibly suffer from it?

You haven't made it clear?

Love that stretch for you…I’m a senior director in a professional role who got promoted a year ago….

I was going to say the place must be awful with a boss like that who makes people feel pressured to go in even when it's not safe but it's even worse than I thought. At least the place is consistent, I guess.

They were having a lovely day apparently - lots of pics of them ordering lunch to the office and eating ice lollies for all to see…repeatedly. Hint: it’s not normal for us to post random photos of us in the office to teams chats….

So not that senior then?

I have never in my life not spoken up in a leadership meeting for fear of being labelled "an issue". It goes with the territory.

I bet the same folk who are bashing the OP are moaning about their kids not going/going to school. Guaranteed

Aww did you miss out on an ice cream. As you've pointed out, today is not a normal day.

IwanttoWFH · 24/06/2026 19:08

We were told there was no flexibility for WFH during the heatwave and we were to be in the office. Regardless, I travelled on an air conditioned train, then sat in an air conditioned office, back to the air conditioned train again. The worst part was the three stops on the Northern Line (which was working fine, despite it saying there were delays). I got home to my house being an absolute sweat box. I’d have rather spent the day in the office 🤷🏼‍♀️
Odd you have such an issue with people being in the office, when it doesn’t affect you in any way, shape or form. Especially, as you say, they’re not even on your team.

I was going to say I can't believe you are blaming all the lower level people for the fuck ups and stupidity of the senior level people but you know something, I can.

At least you get rewarded for your sucking up, I guess.

Elizabeth does. But they also said it would most affected by heat due to travelling a lot above ground and going right up to Slough.

those other lines you mentioned are rebranded overground lines. The name changed a few years ago.

Boxingshibes · 24/06/2026 19:09

I am currently in London for work. My hotel has aircon my office 10min walk has aircon . Going to and from is hell.
But at home and I do 75% wfh would be even more hellish. I do not have aircon!
I have laptop + 3 monitors and my office is hot 🔥 🥵.
I am dreading getting tube and 3 hr train on Friday.
When i saw the thread I initially thought stupid people but it is soo uncomfortable that maybe a tube then aircon office actually might be the more sensible choice.

They’re not all more junior than me though. I don’t need to fight their corner for them.

Ive not thought about DC school in this apart from making sure he took an extra water in and that I had his PE t shirt dried for him. Luckily it took about 10 minutes to dry this morning 😃

I wonder what an affluent industry is?
Are there strict rules of entry - only middle class affluent people may apply? Wonder how they gatekeep that.
Or are op’s descriptive powers just especially weak?
