Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

You sound very smug and nasty!

Not everyone can work from home.

And you sound like you have comprehension issues...

The OP and her colleagues were told they could work from home.

OK so I thought I’d better try to find said article - it was the Financial Times - From 28th May, sorry a link does not work and I did get the 3% wrong it says less than 5%.
As I can’t link (got a breach of copyright message) here’s the jist of the article:

‘Fewer than 5 per cent of UK homes have air conditioning, and developers say only a small proportion of new homes are being built with it. The Conservative Party has blamed national building regulations from 2021, which prioritise passive cooling strategies, such as insulating walls and locating windows to maximise ventilation. The regulations, devised under the then housing secretary Robert Jenrick, who has since defected to Reform UK, made it difficult for developers to install air conditioners, forcing them to exhaust other measures first.’

My actual point was it’s no wonder people don’t want to work from home and is home air conditioning something that needs reconsidering.

So not at all what you said in your first post

pleased I asked for the source!!

They probably thought, well so many others are going in to work without the option of wfh, their choice. Also going in may be a quieter and cooler environment than at home.

Not particularly nice of you to take delight in their misery when they decided to make the effort for whatever reason.

However they could hace chosen it for a multitude of reasons; cooler, less noise, need for interaction, cheaper and so on.

As an employer, if I advised my staff to wfh I’d have little sympathy for those that ignored the advice then got stuck 🤷🏼‍♀️. While I’d not be mean about it, I’d not want to hear any moaning about it 🙄.

“There’s nowt as queer as folk.” What a weird thing to be so happy about.

I hope all the (thankfully a small number) of posters that would delight in this person suffering doesn’t spout this kind of glee in front of their kids.

Sadly though.. I bet they can’t contain themselves

Nobody’s moaned to op, she just thinks it’s funny.
Strange person.

Tbf when you have a boss like that its hard to deviate from what you know they would see as a negative.

"Unless essential" is subjective. One can argue not wanting to piss off your manager and mark your cards in some way, however small, is essential.

You sound pretty immature to be gleeful about this.

I bet you're one of the suck arses... Im not one to miss a day of work, present work.. But there are no need for your comment...

There are lots of coaches to different places from Victoria coach station no? Could some of them not check there and get a cab /bus to Victoria coach station. If I got stranded I would be working from home once I got home and learning to heed the advice from then on. I don't know if the overground effed but they could cab it, potentially share cabs and do it that way x
