Colleagues ignored WFH advice now stranded in heatwave - karma.

I work in a big office in central London. Everyone lives in lots of different places obviously, but almost everyone is a significant train/ tube ride away.

Due to the heatwave our work told us to WFH where possible. But my most senior manager loves a bit of presenteeism. Hence a number of people (ie all the suck arses) came in. And, then proceeded to post/ message incessantly on internal comms demonstrating that they were in the office. Highly tiresome presenteeism considering ALL our calls were moved to Teams on our clients’ insistence.

Fast forward a few hours and ALL the tubes are fucked. As are almost all the trains. No-one can get home and they’re panicking at facing down 2-3hr bus journeys in 39 degree heat.

Serves them right for travelling against the advice of the health agency, government, TFL and the company. There was a do not travel unless essential instruction.

Of course, senior boss is alright. He got a company cab home…

OP, I found your post deeply unpleasant, it comes across as extremely spiteful.

For those of us who don’t WFH for various reasons your glee at other people’s delay is utterly repugnant.

Loveaghost · 24/06/2026 18:32

Exactly. I don’t hate on most of my colleagues. They’re lovely. But this is reserved for a special breed of suck- ups who deliberately came in to ‘prove’ they were better than the rest of us. To pander to the very senior boss who loves people in the office, even if it’s literally dangerous. And he got a company cab in and home so more fool them.

Or maybe they did it because they feared repercussions?

Maybe their home environment isn’t conducive to WFH on a day like today and they decided the air con and office might be better?

LondonLass2026 · 24/06/2026 18:34

It isn't karma at all. It's sad. I don't know why you find it so funny.

Seagulldancing · 24/06/2026 18:35

Is the office air-conditioned? Ive stayed at work late on very hot days in the past to avoid my sweatbox London flat. A trip home on the bus at 8pm after a pleasant air-conditioned day would be nicer than boiling at home.

Loveaghost · 24/06/2026 18:36

Preppyprepper · 24/06/2026 18:06

I hope your WFH is permanently removed so you have to go into the office and actually do some work, rather than wasting time on mumsnet

Edited

It’s 6pm….

Nah, being gleeful about people being stuck underground in 45 degree heat still makes you bitchy and horrible.

Meh I just got sick of all the photos and comments showing/ proving they were in the office. Just to try and make those of us who followed the actual rules not look as good. I can’t stand presenteeism.

What happens to any colleagues who literally can't work from home, so can't "follow the rules"? Are they allowed to go into the office?

Meadowfinch · 24/06/2026 18:36

Wow, what a nasty, small.minded vindictive post. I'm glad you're not my colleague OP.

You are certainly not someone I would ever want to have to rely on.

EastGrinstead · 24/06/2026 18:37

The OP sounds like a real charmer😊

Ime people who concern themselves with presenteeism in others are often at the opposite end of the scale and are aggrieved that gets highlighted. Just a thought.

baroqueandblue · 24/06/2026 18:37

Just a tip, OP. If you understood what the word 'karma' actually means, you'd know that the appropriate Buddhist response is compassion - not gloating - for other people in their ignorance. Because ignorance can prove painful, even fatal, according to circumstances.

roses2 · 24/06/2026 18:09

Some people on here don't know how to have a laugh clearly!

Karma got your colleagues good!

"Got them" for what, exactly? What did they do to hurt op? This isn't some huge revenge plot. I can have a laugh as much as anyone but I've had decades of being stuck on London buses and tubes in the heat, with my asthma making me want to faint. It isn't funny.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 24/06/2026 18:38

Are you doing badly at work? It isn't normal to be this bitter.

Purpleandping · 24/06/2026 18:39

I reckon if anyone's at risk from "Karma" it's OP.

Loveaghost · 24/06/2026 18:39

Dexternight · 24/06/2026 18:08

@Loveaghost some people don't have ideal home working conditions.
So have no choice.
Others prefer AC offices and if public transport is working why not.
It may not be all due to 'sucking up', and even if it was why are you been so joyful at them suffering.
Deeply unpleasant.

But it’s not working. It’s literally headline news on the tv right now. Saying over and over ‘do not travel on public transport in London. Its a danger to life.’

Yet they did.

And I know this handful of colleagues well. They all have perfectly good houses (we work in quite an affluent industry) and worked from home over Covid with no issues. They’re not coming in because they have to. They’re coming in and finding excuses to post photos of them in the office on bloody Teams ffs!

I know a woman who chooses to go into the office to avoid her abusive husband. Would she have received karma too? Or should she have worked from home and got a beating for it? You don’t know what goes on in peoples lives or their reasons for doing what they do. You do you.

HRHCurmudgeon · 24/06/2026 18:40

I’m posting from a free-moving, totally normal tube right now. Lovely and cool too on the Hammersmith & City (thanks TFL for the air con!). Totally normal commuting experience.

Worry about your own kharma OP.

catslovehairties · 24/06/2026 18:40

MN gets more and more po-faced by the day 😂

Of course YANBU OP. I would be sniggering too.

Loveaghost · 24/06/2026 18:41

Anewappa · 24/06/2026 18:14

Op is probably on performance monitoring and this manager basically doesn’t stand for crap work, which obviously won’t go down well with someone like this

Love that stretch for you…I’m a senior director in a professional role who got promoted a year ago….

OP posts:
Anewappa · 24/06/2026 18:41

you and this manager have quite a…. Negative history don’t you @Loveaghost ?

Or you on performance monitoring? Although let’s be honest… you aren’t going to say “yes” even if you are!

Passingthrough123 · 24/06/2026 18:41

Someone on Twatter has just reported that Westminster Tube station is closed because smoke's coming from the station and there's a fire alert with the fire brigade present. So that'll be having a knock-on effect on loads of lines and trains will have be stopped underground.

Still think it's karma now OP? 🙄

It's not 39 degrees in central London, it's 34.

The trains are. It just said on the news. This is the issue.

Really? I’m gleeful reading about it! I love to see arse lickers get their just desserts. No body likes a creep.

Eddielizzard · 24/06/2026 18:42

I think this is schadenfreude rather than karma...
