Oh it’s VAT on school fees is it. I was waiting to find out what the nasty policy that has caused so much harm to parents and children was. That was in the manifesto.

And their opinion doesn’t count?

With all due respect, you are the one that brought up that the opinion doesn't count.

Raven, it might be an idea to edit. If you keep using that name for Badenoch you will keep being reported by our lurkers and MN might end up pulling the whole thread.

Raven08 · 24/06/2026 13:48

Ah.
I see.
Naughty space in there.
Apologies. 😃

placemats · 24/06/2026 13:48

You do need to edit the post. @Raven08

Otherwise this thread will be deleted.

Yeah report is the best. You have to be quick with the edits and not post after.

VAT was in Labour's manifesto, it that is what you are really angry about @derxa

I believe that no other European country charges VAT on education. The upshot is that private education will be even more exclusive. Schools will let in less able pupils with richer parents. Fewer scholarships etc

Righto

BIWI · 24/06/2026 13:55

Buying private education is a choice, not a necessity or a legal requirement. Therefore it's entirely legitimate to charge VAT on it.

Raven08 · 24/06/2026 13:56

@placemats
I blame proof reading dds university dissertation so many times...it was on EP and the Rivers of blood speech (she got a first 🙂)

BIossomtoes · 24/06/2026 13:56

Does anyone know who the woman in white on Badenoch’s right is? She looked absolutely disgusted and very uncomfortable throughout today’s performance.

This is a reductive view and counterintuitive.

Many European countries don't have private education which, of course, makes education a far more even playing field for all (e.g. Finland)

Private school was always meant to be exclusive.

Whatabout Europe doesn't really work as they have different cultures wrt private schools.

So you are angry on behalf of PS users, what about state schools, what damage has been caused?

She did. I wonder if KB is getting too vile for even the Tories 🤔
I've said it before...
You incite the mob, you may end up being targeted by that mob.

Thanks @mnhq👍

pointythings · 24/06/2026 14:08

Regardless of the rights and wrong of the VAT policy, it is not on to represent the views of a small subset of all teachers, a group with vested interests, as the view of all teachers in the UK. I don't understand how @derxa thought we wouldn't pick up on this. It's a low blow an a deeply silly tactic to use in a group with a better than average understanding of stats and data.

DuncinToffee · 24/06/2026 14:14

To me, it felt as just another attack on a female Labour politician.

And derxa has been around long enough to know what our reaction would be Confused

Exactly. She targeted Reeves and Phillipson. She had a bit of a go at Miliband but it seemed less vitriolic (oart from the - admittedly funny - joke about him not being a stranger to betraying people he was close to).
