Tesco cancelled my delivery due to severe weather

It's not much of chat topic but Tesco just cancelled my delivery due in 1 hour - 'because of the severe weather'.

I rather admire Tesco for this. Lugging heavy crates around in blazing sunshine and 39C is not a reasonable thing to expect their staff to do even if their refrigeratated trucks are able to preserve the food. We all need to start looking ahead and help out vulnerable neighbours who need supplies when supermarkets can't deliver.

The vans are not air conditioned and the heat generated by the refrigerators makes the vans pretty much unbearable even on normal hot days. Over the next few days it would be pretty much dangerous to health to drive them. I think protecting their drivers is a good thing.

Maybe some of them have taken the day off to look after their children since some schools aren't open all day?

That's ridiculous. I know it's hotter than normal (for June...) but this is taking the piss.

Ours is booked for Friday evening. If they cancel if, so be it. We’ll go to Aldi when DH gets home from work. It’s a good thing that companies are protecting their employees imo.

The OP's delivery was due 9am! If the delivery drivers 'cannot cope' at this time of day, they shouldn't be doing the job.

I use Tesco and the delivery drivers have told me they don't have aircon in their vehicles. I was surprised.

This is awful, I honestly assumed these days every vehicle would have air con and given how much profit tesco makes this is gross that they dont have air con. I genuinely didnt realise this and assumed all delivery vehicles would have air con.

Tesco delivered yesterday before we hit the really high temperatures. The driver was so hot, literally dripping wet. There was no air con on his van. I asked him rather than posting on here saying that he did. He said only on newer vans do - he carried heavy crates. People are of course ordering lots of drinks, large watermelons and other heavy objects. Be kind people and let people have the slots who don’t have aircon in cars they can use.

I think the fridge and freezers are inefficient. My foodshop came at 7am this morning with most of the stuff already defrosted. I have had to stop ordering ice lollies and ice cream from Tesco as it’s just melted before we get it.

my husband is delivering Amazon parcels atm, most drivers have no aircon in their vans and don’t get time to stop to have lunch or use the toilet as their delivery route doesn’t allow time for it (if you choose to stop you fail your route and get a financial penalty)

it’s borderline criminal. He’s got his aircon fixed (in a van he has to pay £280 a week for from Amazon aswell!) his only saving grace is some of the lovely customers give him cold drinks through out the day. He’s out of his van for long periods too dragging the delivery bags around. Show your Amazon drivers love this week if you have any deliveries!

This sort of thread demonstrates how singular minded some people can be. There's so much more to it than "their vans have AC". There's an entire chain of systems, technology, processes, people, locations, etc that all need to work efficiently in order to drop your box of milk and loo rolls to your house.

Does anyone honestly believe Tesco would happily cancel thousands of £££££ of orders on a whim?

I believe its weather related seeing as its happened in multiple shops here. It seems it doesnt even need to be extreme temperatures as its been mid twenties at best, so I imagine lots more will go this week.

Our Waitrose order has just arrived minus ice cream. Apparently they can't guarantee it would be ok. I hsve no problem with that.

That's what our driver told us too when we asked if he had aircon a couple of summers ago. We always offer them a cold drink and they pretty much always accept.

They also have to open and close the doors on the trucks numerous times letting cold air out. As another poster said her food arrived semi defrosted. That's just not safe.

Our postman was two hours earlier yesterday he was suffering at 10 am just carrying parcels. Imagine carrying those crates.

This will cost them a lot of money so won’t have been done lightly. Health and safety of employees and customers needs to be a priority.

The deliveries usually start at about 6am though. The fact that it was cancelled at such short notice makes me suspect that there was an issue with the van keeping the food cool enough once the delivery round had already started.

Well maybe theres no drivers as they’re all off looking after children who’s schools are closed. Maybe they aren’t able or don’t want to work part shifts. So if someone’s shift starts at 8 it’s hardly worth going in until 10. I can’t see anyone on here who works in an office saying well it’s not that hot until 11 so I’ll pop into the office for an hour first thing then head home again. 🤣
