We just had an email saying they're shutting at lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday because of the heat. Seems fairly sensible to me.

Yes, my school is closing early and so is my children's school

SE of england with no AC to speak of

Eachstepatatime · 22/06/2026 17:07

Stay safe & look out for the elderly.

LondonKara · 22/06/2026 17:08

Same here, nw London.

Nightmare for me as a lone parent working full time as there's no childcare option at all. I wish there was a central government response as at the moment I am expected to travel to work, which seems unfair if schools are closing.

DD’s primary in NW London is staying open as it has air con. She will be cooler there than at home to be honest.

MyTimeToo · 22/06/2026 17:14

The UK is going to have to plan ahead and spend on schools.

I am in a small city in Andalusia where it is 39 today. We walked to the bakery this morning and could hear the primary age pupils playing outside. Joyful.

The school has high walls around the perimeter and I’m assuming shade.

How ridiculous. Surely the kids are going to be hotter being collected at lunchtime , either sitting in a car or walking home in full sun then being bored at home than if they just stayed at school & were distracted by friends and lessons ?!

I’m not sure body temperature falls lower because the body owner is ‘distracted’ 🫢

This is the current predictions for 1200 and 1500 on Thursday.

We've got a red weather warning for Wednesday and Thursday in South Wales. I'm hoping my son's Primary School will give some info today on what their plan is.

We had a message last night that they were allowed to go without their ties. But he's still in a short sleeve collared shirt and uniform shorts. I was hoping they'd suggest PE kit at least for tomorrow.

In all fairness most secondary PE kits are warmer than just school skirt and blouse. Maybe better for boys so they don't have to wear trousers

LewishamTeacher · 22/06/2026 17:31

No early closing here so far. Where I teach there is no uniform - the expectation is for students to dress appropriately (which they do). Those who were in today were wearing their usual range of trousers, shorts, t-shirts, vest tops. We're in a Victorian building which has had its sash windows replaced with double-glazing that doesn't offer the same air circulation and ventilation the building was designed with. I opened all windows and doors early this morning to cool the building down but by 11am, shut everything up and covered all the windows. I brought in a fan from home for my classroom so hot students could park themselves in front of it. The fan will be coming home with me this evening though as we need it at home.

A number of our students didn't make it in today because of how the heat affects them as a result of the medications they are on. Sertraline is one such medication but there are others.

Is it a private school OP? have heard of local private school closing half day tomorrow.

MrsMitford3 · 22/06/2026 17:37

We are in Berkshire and the weather warning has moved to red.

Schools closing wednesday and Thursday.

Both state schools fwiw - one is a primary and the other is secondary. Neither one is private

Good god. This country is a joke sometimes

Deciding that un-air-conditioned glass walled rooms and concrete courtyards are bad places to put young children in extreme weather is a joke? Sorry, I don't get it. Could you explain why it's funny?

Hottiiieee · 22/06/2026 17:42

HNRTF but am not sure how that will work for parents who have to work!

If they are sensible they have support networks for such occasions.

MyIcyHeart · 22/06/2026 17:59

Same here. Just outside Bristol.

pragmatismuniversalsentimentalist · 22/06/2026 18:00

I love people's optimism that all parents, if told their children were staying off school in the heat, would then ensure their child kept sensibly cool.

There are loads, LOADS of shit parents out there who would send the kids out to play all day in the heat, not top up suncream. Let young children play in water poorly supervised.

Such assumptions that children will all be better off at home with parents in a heatwave.

There will be plenty of children who would be much safer in school

Ah mine is a boy in Primary so much cooler for him in PE kit!
But yes greatly depends on the school's uniform

Same - we're SE London - this is secondary. Primary is giving parents the choice to pick up at lunch, but will remain open. I get the impression is this co-ordinated from the councils.

Animatic · 22/06/2026 18:32

My son was very unwell today as classroom got extremelly hot, so had to bring him home lunchtime. We have now an option of lunchtime pickup Tue-Thu. I wish they could just shut the school as it is an old Victorian building and it is built to trap heat.

EasternStandard · 22/06/2026 18:36

We now have the option to leave at lunch but the school won’t close. Seems like the best way to do it.

MyEasterBonnet · 22/06/2026 18:50

I’m north west, so it’s much cooler here. It said it was 22 today, but it’s felt less and it rained this afternoon. I dressed thinking it was going to be boiling, and I actually had goosebumps at one point. It still didn’t stop the kids from complaining and saying that it was too hot/ against their human rights/ should be sent home etc, yet they all still had their blazers on so can’t have actually felt hot. Can’t wait for it to get hotter later in the week…
