Anyone else's school shutting this week?

We just had an email saying they're shutting at lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday because of the heat. Seems fairly sensible to me.

I work in schools; I've been made aware today of several schools who have received notice of Ofsted inspections this week, in the red weather warning zone...

Appalling.

If nothing else, we need to be suspending inspections in any areas affected by a red weather warning.

Beer3000 · 22/06/2026 15:51

The weather is peaking at 24 here, so this definitely doesn't impact us. However, every year in winter, our school closes for 3 to 5 days due to snow days/storms/etc. Once it was shut for a full week due to a power cut. I won't say that I don't moan, but people cope, the NHS doesn't collapse due to lack of staff, and no one seems bothered about the loss of learning.

It's just a fact of life - sometimes weather gets in the way of plans. We are used to that happening in winter, and increasingly, it will happen in summer also.

How ridiculous. Surely the kids are going to be hotter being collected at lunchtime , either sitting in a car or walking home in full sun then being bored at home than if they just stayed at school & were distracted by friends and lessons ?!

Temperature peaks later in the afternoon.

ThatGreenFawn · 22/06/2026 15:54

Nope, the school I work in has air conditioning. We had a few children ask to put jumpers on today !

They won't be as hot as walking home when it is even hotter at 3pm though.

GameOfJones · 22/06/2026 16:00

We just got the email that our school is doing the same and will be closing at lunchtime tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.

It's a pain for childcare but totally understandable. We'll likely be trying to do some childcare swaps with friends so I can have theirs one afternoon if they'll have my DDs another.

Theforbiddenforest · 22/06/2026 16:02

DD1’s secondary are shutting at lunchtime although that is 1:25 so they only miss one lesson.

DD2’s primary are saying they are currently planning to stay open all day.

We are in the SE with temperatures forecast to be 38.

Another reason to feel like shit as a working mum! My youngest child’s primary has given the option to pick up early, but we can’t!

There will be others there and they will probably play and enjoy themselves, I recall similar happening, not heat but something like that when DS was at school and loads stopped because their parents were working

Nix99 · 22/06/2026 16:04

We're West Midlands and DDs primary school are closing after lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will reassess for Friday.

Yep dd needs to take a jumper. She was a bit chilly with the air con. Obviously nice to have though

Yes, shutting at lunch times.

Schools get sweltering on normal days, it's not practical to have a classroom stuffed full of kids at 39-40c.

And before anyone starts on about how it's woke to change behaviour in a heat wave, no summer did not get to 35-40c in the 90s.
When I was at school a 30c day was ridiculously hot.

Yes, I was thinking about this yesterday.

I remember when it got to 30/32 degrees and there would be headlines in the tabloid papers such as 'what a scorcher!!!'

I've been on a couple of thread on mn since the red alert has been declared and I'm beginning to think that a lot of people have no idea what an extremely humid 40 degree heat feels like.

Drivingmissrangey · 22/06/2026 11:47

Neither do most homes.

Yes, but parents can manage their children feeling poorly in the heat with waaaaay more options that teachers/schools have as they try to deal with hundreds of children feeling not great in the heat.

Zanatdy · 22/06/2026 16:19

Ours is too, South London. Same as OP, half day Tues, Wed & Thurs. Handy for the football!

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 22/06/2026 16:22

The timetable for my eldest's school is only 1 lesson after lunch. If she can go home at 1 and hunker down in the cool that makes much more sense. Alas not to be. She's SEN and refuses to take her school hoodie off and doesn't notice if she's hot or thirsty.

We've had similar, closing at 12.15 Weds & Thurs. We're in the south west of England.
It's really unusual for the school to close or close early due to weather but there are kids who travel quite a distance to & from so i'm guessing they want them to have a reasonable journey home before the real humidity mid/late afternoon.

janeandmarysmum · 22/06/2026 16:35

Some primary schools in Hampshire are closing completely on Wednesday and Thursday.

MySaintedAunt · 22/06/2026 16:36

JassyRadlett · 22/06/2026 15:07

When you look at observations, and particularly in cities where heat is absorbed by concrete and similar, heat often peaks later in the day, around 4pm.

PP is correct, temperatures continue to increase after the middle of the day because there's a delay between when the sun provides the most light vs when the heat peaks.

According to the Met Office, where I am temps will peak between 4pm and 5pm on Wednesday and around 2pm on Thursday, with that peak continuing until after 5pm.

So a lunchtime pickup rather than 3pm, or even 5pm, looks sensible.

Yep. My garden's north facing & the area directly behind the house gets no sun. At lunch time it was fine out here, hot but breezy, now it's like a bloody sauna, the humidity's increased significantly. That's the usual pattern during hot spells.

StrictlyCoffee · 22/06/2026 16:41

Ugh we are on holiday in the UK and now our kids have left school chose this week so most of the kids would still be in school. I bet the beaches will be swarming with them now.

newrubylane · 22/06/2026 16:41

Our school has air conditioning. I'm quite tempted to go in with them to be honest!

Crunchymum · 22/06/2026 16:42

Central London, primary is closed on Wednesday and Thursday (covering the period of the red warning)

Although only one child is there as there other went on a residential today and is going to be stuck with the 38c expected there!

No word at all from DC1's school (secondary) beyond moving to "summer uniform" late last week IE they can leave their blazers at home.

LettuceAndCarrots · 22/06/2026 16:49

No. I'd expect the school to deal with it somehow tbh.

Our school is allowing PE kit all week if pupils find it more comfortable. They've also rescheduled sports day. But still open. Temperatures are here are expected to be around 33 degrees.

Good god. This country is a joke sometimes

Are you aware that (a) heat can be dangerous or make people ill (b) schools are packed with people (c) schools can’t afford air con?

DancingInTheMoonlights · 22/06/2026 17:04

Yes, here in Somerset.
