Anyone else's school shutting this week?

We just had an email saying they're shutting at lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday because of the heat. Seems fairly sensible to me.

I'm in the SW. DC primary school closing for 3 afternoons starting from today. I work for the civil service so thankfully can take paid special leave to look after them.

DC are properly confused about the whole 'extreme heat' thing as it was pissing it down with rain when I dropped them off this morning! Sun has just come out though...

ronaldgenz · 23/06/2026 10:48

I'm fuming that my DC's lower school play is still going ahead tomorrow. The hall gets unbearably hot, and temperatures are forecast to hit 35°C. With children in heavy costumes, there's a risk of overheating or becoming unwell. I'm also concerned about grandparents and others with health issues attending in those conditions. I can't understand why it hasn't been cancelled or postponed. Teachers say students need to be resilient, ridiculous. Is anyone else in this position? I want them to postpone.

um no, that’s insane. I’d contact the local council. We can pick up at lunchtime and when in school they’re doing low key calm activities. A number still felt unwell

My son’s school has closed now until Friday. It’s an SN school and many of the children have medical conditions and/or are on medications that mean the heat is beyond unbearable for them and possibly dangerous for them. Some will be on school transport for over an hour each way at the start and end of their day. I really don’t blame any of the staff and higher ups that have noped right out of that. I do recognise I am lucky that I can sort childcare for him, some parents will be scrambling around right now to deal with that.

Wildywondrous · 23/06/2026 16:08

I wish they would say it was optional and they'd authorise absence for those not going in which is what they do when it snows.

Dd's school is over 150 years old so the classrooms are small and the windows only have one small opener at the top.
She's come home today feeling drained from the heat and the next two days will be worse, we're in the red warning area so it's going to be baking.

I think it's insane too. Dd worries she'll be the most hated person if I get the play cancelled. Who at the council do I contact?

Neither do most homes.

25 to 30 kids in one room, means it's a lot different to home

saffy2 · 23/06/2026 17:57

I’m in Kent, south east. It’s a red warning here I believe. Schools still open as normal. They did postpone sports day from tomorrow though. I have no issue with them being in school tomorrow. My eldest 16 is camping with his friends this week also in the red zone. I’ve told him to be sensible with activity. Water, sun cream and shade. But i
dont think life should stop because of heat. And I genuinely do think we need to be able to carry on, the heat every year reaches upwards of 30 degrees now.

Tiddleypom1 · 23/06/2026 18:17

Interesting. We’re on the south coast and it’s predicting 29 degrees on Thursday. Mad to think London will be so much higher. Our school is just being sensible but no closures.

therealduchess · 23/06/2026 18:23

Yep! Almost every local school is shutting or closing early in our area of West Sussex.

C152 · 23/06/2026 18:25

Yes. Children with known health issues were offered the opportunity to leave at 12:30 each day. Just had an email to say the school is closing to all children at 1pm Wed and Thursday.

IcyShark · 23/06/2026 18:38

Im in Cardiff. My son's high school is closed tomorrow and Thursday. My 2 youngest are both in school. Even though one is in specialist provision they are still staying open. Ine teacher admitted there are no fans and its stifling in there today. Lots of glass windows so it like a green house. And I dont think there any air con. Trouble is keep them off you get a fine.

StMarie4me · 23/06/2026 18:38

GingerBeverage · 22/06/2026 12:40

The heatwaves will keep happening, so assume the govt needs to start calculating the impact of closures on attainment.

Air con is the only thing. Which damages the environment more. Or a complete change to our daily lives as they do abroad. Can you see the stuffed shirts doing that? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lovaduck74 · 23/06/2026 18:40

On the south coast. My daughter's secondary school closing early tomorrow and Thursday. Sons primary school not closing but they can wear pe kit. Both in Victorian buildings with no air con. I work in an old Victorian building with full floor to ceiling windows and no ventilation. Meant to be in the 30s both days. Pray for me 😂

DDivaStar · 23/06/2026 18:54

Up until today only change for dad's school this week was they didn't need to wear blazers.

Got an email this afternoon that they will shut at 12.30 tomorrow. No school busses til 3, children can stay til 3 in a classroom if you contact the school. So ultimately 600 teenagers will be kicked out at the hotest part of the day predicted to be 32 !

I can't collect her as my office has good air conditioning so am expected in.

ArthurChristmas22 · 23/06/2026 19:00

Meanwhile, the hospital today was 45 degrees, the restaurant is still fully operating, no air con. I am not clear why schools consider themselves to be needing a different outcome to everyone else. Fine if a full government instruction is given, otherwise, why is one sector having to respond differently.

PetuniaT · 23/06/2026 19:03

It was my 5 year old granddaughter's Sport Day today and that went ahead OK without any fuss and there's no shade at all om the school playing field

Bitchcraft · 23/06/2026 19:03

We're in the South West and most schools in my area are closed tomorrow and Thursday. DC are in primary and the school building is a fish tank with huge windows that don't open fully and no air con. We watched the kids come out yesterday and today and they were all dripping with sweat, red and irritable. I've been inside the school during hot weather and it's unbearable so I think they've made the right decision.

If you are in an area where it's over 30 degrees then I am willing to bet a million pounds that there was fuss.

GabriellaFaith · 23/06/2026 19:22

Not for heat... But morning off tomorrow so they can watch the football late!!!

SheilaWilde · 23/06/2026 19:24

I’m assuming people spouting the ‘it’s ridiculous/people are snowflakes/I walked 100 miles today in 70 degree heat’ line are not in the south/west.
I teach in a massive school in the south east made completely of glass, windows (if you’re lucky enough to have one) only crack open at the top. The clever architects didn’t think about airflow so each classroom leads onto a closed corridor with no windows. It was boiling today, no one could learn or teach. 300 staff were all suffering (so not just a handful), even staff who love the heat and regularly travel to hot countries. All of the kids were wilting, very hot and unable to learn. It was dangerously hot everywhere in the building. They have now issued a full closure for Weds and Thursday. So I guess we’re all snowflakes but I’m very glad to get two days at home.

AlphabetBird · 23/06/2026 19:29

Closed tomorrow and Thursday. Very sensible. It’s going to be 38-39 here, and the buildings are not designed for it.

My work, a new building, has lovely aircon. I could very easily sit and say how much braver and more resilient I am than my kids, being able to sit and work for hours at a steady 19 degrees while their classroom sits at 35 plus, but that would make me look a bit of a twat, wouldn’t it…

CandidRaven · 23/06/2026 19:46

My daughters school sent a message this morning saying that blazers will be optional this week so that's the extent they're dealing with it.

SW London

Not too far from there. Ours closing midday Wed, Thurs and Fri.

Samantha08 · 23/06/2026 20:10

Yes my DS school is shut tomorrow and possibly Thursday. They let us know 4.30 pm today. I work full time and I am single parent, DS dad and my mum and dad have all passed away. So minimal family support. Asked my boss if DS can come to work with me tomorrow and he said yes, work nice and air conditioned, DS is 12, so hoping it will go ok 🤔🤣. My boss said I can possibly go home about 3pm, after I've finished showing a tenant's surveyor around a property. My sister is able to have him at hers on Thursday. Yeah it's annoying, but what can you do? DS was gutted he's got to come to work with me, think he thought he was going to have a nice lie in tomorrow 🤣
