Anyone else's school shutting this week?

We just had an email saying they're shutting at lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday because of the heat. Seems fairly sensible to me.

My son’s secondary (Yorkshire) have just sent the generic “send them with suncream and water bottles” text. Usual uniform and toileting (not in lesson) policies in place including wearing full uniform including blazer travelling to and from school. Not only that but they’re having Y7 end of year exams starting on Wednesday in the scorching main hall and have been warned and absences will result in total fail and discipline. But it’s alright coz they have outside shade and they can take their blazers off in class 🙄
I’m usually very impressed and supportive of the school as they’re fab but I feel there’s a bit of a disconnect between what the reality of what it’s going to be like this week and what they HOPE is going to happen. My lad was sick due to the heat today so I’m very tempted to keep him off tomorrow to Friday, he’s autistic too is really struggling but is terrified of getting in “trouble”

We have ofsted. And no, they wouldn't defer. So. We will be having to carry on as normal. Currently flrecast to be 39 with a red heat warning.

Fucking hell you win the thread. Ofsted should be ashamed - a government body ignoring a red heat warning. Their travel definitely cannot be classed as essential.

Hope they all pass out in the heat and leave you alone.

I encourage any poster whose DCs schools are being inspected this week to feed back whatn a shit idea it is.

WolfinSheepsDress · 22/06/2026 22:08

Yes DC school close all day wed /Thurs at work we have been offered half day work from home

Same here, nw London.

Nightmare for me as a lone parent working full time as there's no childcare option at all. I wish there was a central government response as at the moment I am expected to travel to work, which seems unfair if schools are closing.

Same here. It's like early COVID all over again when the kids were off school but workers were still expected to go in. It's a nightmare when you're a single parent.

Schools closed at the same time as everything else in the original lockdown.

Yeah, nice re-writing of history there. And whose decision was it to close schools at that point?
Not teachers' ... although according to MN it appeared to be so

Brownbananaspot · 22/06/2026 23:20

Not everybody's workplace closed @noblegiraffe . Mine didn't. I wasn't a key worker but we were 'told' we were and made to come in. Not all employers were managing the situation as they should.

I didn't mention or blame teachers at all @BillyBites

So schools weren't 'off while workers were expected to go in', you just had a shit employer who flouted the rules.

They sound like winners to me.

My employer genuinely did make us come in. Whether they were following the rules or not doesn’t change the fact that workplaces were open for some people who weren’t key workers. That was my point.

Rainbowlou0001 · 22/06/2026 23:27

I’ve seen many posters on here and on other platforms stating that teachers ‘just want an extra day at the beach.’
We don’t make the decision.
We are closing at 12.30 on Wednesday and Thursday for the children, just like when the village flooded, or it snowed really hard making roads dangerous, or when we had Covid…We shut for the children not the staff!
We will always stay on for children of key workers or those that have no childcare and we always have work to do.
It makes me laugh that some people honestly think we sit in the staff room concocting some reason or excuse to get some time off work!

noblegiraffe · 22/06/2026 23:28

Schools with intolerable classrooms should close and if they don't, parents who can should be pulling their kids out this week. There is no point in them being in school except for the government to pretend that schools can run fine during extreme heat by merely putting the kids in PE kit and pretending that an open window will fix everything. Nothing will change until change is forced.

Do you understand that a red weather warning means there's a danger to life?

Do you understand that there is only a danger to life for vulnerable people, or idiots who don't take sensible precautions? Do you really think that other (not hot) countries don't have temps like this now and again? We do, and we just get on with it, without all the hysteria on MN.

Honestly, what a lot of drama. If the country is getting hotter then you need to learn how to deal with it, not grind to a halt every time.

FatterthanBarbie · 23/06/2026 05:44

Why is it always healthcare workers that get into a tizz.

You're not the only frontline staff in the entire country.

pouletvous · 23/06/2026 05:54

Oh god, really? What a pain

i hope ours doesn’t

Quentino · 23/06/2026 06:27

My kids will have to go in as no closure announced - and I can't afford the fines for keeping them off unauthorised

Im not a key worker but it was essential for the running of the company I go to work even as a single parent. Thankfully this meant I could bring the offspring with me and to be honest it gave us a sense of purpose while the world felt like it was closing in on us!

JustAnotherWhinger · 23/06/2026 07:24

The high school here is now closed as the heating is jammed on.

Thankfully the HT has saw sense on that one this morning. The engineer is coming tomorrow afternoon so they’ll update for Thursday after that.

No more ‘wrong trainer colour’ drama for the HT to stoke 😂

I’m in two minds. It’s not the being at school but being on the tube coming home that is worrying me. DD has been known to faint in the heat

The Central Line was an oven last Friday and Saturday, and temperatures hadn’t even reached 30c on those days. I can’t imagine how hot it will be over the next few days. Absolutely unbearable.

WolfinSheepsDress · 23/06/2026 08:06

I woudnt touch the underground in these temps what if one broke down

I remember getting on the northern line i think near Hampstead and there was a murky haze you could barely see though I dread to wonder at air quality let alone anything else.
The Liz line stations are large and airy and the trains are ok but some of the tubes are teeny tiny carriages ,being able to get off is one thing it's being broken down in the heat that concerns me

HiZev · 23/06/2026 08:18

I'm on the tube right now! Normal level of unpleasant. I would like to work from home tomorrow and Thursday but can't really. Could splash out on an air conditioned cab maybe but for both days both ways will be £200 ish.

We are in mid wales, so not as hot as some places. 31/34 for tomorrow and Thursday. My dd year 7 has a load of school tests. I really hope they cancel them. The kids are going to struggle to concentrate in the heat.

Exactly. I keep seeing videos on facebook of children with their feet in trays of water watching movies and fanning themselves - they don't need to be in school for that, I can do that at home.

I worked in an infant class the last time we saw these temperatures and all we did was try to keep the children still and quiet and drinking water. Absolutely no education.
