A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yes, I believe Westminster did return to Conservative control. But many others are Labour, LibDem or even Green.

SapphireCasino · 25/06/2026 15:00

I've just got home and my boiling box small
flat is really hard work

Obviously, I haven't been here to open the windows which I presume hasn't helped

I spent most of the journey looking like DelicateDog - she probably feels the same way as I do about public transport and the bathrooms! DelicateDog is my spirit animal 🥰

On the way home, I was thinking a lot about where I've been and what the future is of so many parts of England. Everyone's battening down the hatches. And what is the end result of that? I mean Harrogate looks fine, but I had a lot of people telling me that things are not doing great there, and I could see a lot of empty premises there too.

I also think an awful a lot of the accommodation is Airbnb, which obviously doesn't put money into the local economy. I don't use it, which is ironic considering self catering would probably suit me better. But I just really hate the idea of using it.

as I say, I don't want to name where I've just been because it feels a bit unfair if any posters live there. But the sense of it being lost and run down... one shopkeeper was discussing it with her assistant and she said to me that things were much better even last year.

I went to an event there and people said to me that they're fine with Southerners coming in if they genuinely want to be part of the community, which I think happens a lot with retired folks.

Ironically, there was a family on the train talking about how some American cities are starting to rule against Airbnb.

@Pacificwave I found that really interesting, thank you

My previous building was built in the year 2000 I think. And that was boiling hot as well. I just do not understand why people are so against it.

I say this is somebody who really feels the cold! I find that people forget about the conditioning bit of air-conditioning

Making homes and workplace and everywhere less stuffy can only be a good thing. The vilification of it just baffles me

And of course over here, I find people often say that it's not practical to build for heat and for cold. But when I worked in the US, I found they managed it just fine.

Nuthatch26 · 25/06/2026 18:14

Good grief 🥵🥵
I've been working in a portakabin all day. I feel sorry for those of you in the red zone.
Glad you got home safe and well Sapphire.

How many ploppers will we get this evening I wonder? 🤔

Immigration minister Mike Tapp expected to be sacked.

The immigration minister is due to be sacked after he wrote an unauthorised article calling for foreign care workers to be exempt from her hardline immigration reforms.
In an article for The Times, Mike Tapp said it was his “strong belief” that migrant care workers should not have to wait longer to apply for permanent settlement.
The home secretary was unaware he had written the article and he is expected to be sacked from his job as minister for migration and citizenship for breaching the ministerial code.

@Nuthatch26 poor you
I can't imagine how hot it was in there
I worked in one one winter and it was absolutely freezing though but basically they're not protected from the elements in anyway so that would make sense

I just tried to eat an ice lolly and I've honestly never seen a lolly melt so fast!

About the care workers, to be honest I think certain workers should be prioritised and that seems like one of them whether there is a genuine shortage

however, we don't seem to do any checks on what people do after they've got their route into the country and it seems like a lot of them leave the sector

Honestly, I don't understand anything about how we run stuff here

I used to get annoyed when my ex complained about the state of the country - he's lived in a few others - but I'm starting to see his point.

It's 31c outdoors now. Spent the afternoon round friends swimming pool watching the kids, I sat in the in the shade then we all went to the local pub with a beer garden and a stream running through it. The children were very happy jumping over the stones. I'm going to have a shower now and one going to bed.

I'm too hot to comment on politics tonight.

CaveMum · 25/06/2026 21:04

It’s currently 30 degrees INSIDE my house according to the thermostat. We’ve opened every downstairs window/door we can to try and get cooler air flowing in now that the sun has dipped.

it will take days for the house to cool off completely. DH and I have agreed to get someone in to quote on air con installation, I suspect it will be hideously expensive but we can’t go on like this.

That sounds as good as it gets in a heatwave.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/06/2026 21:13

The dogs and I are sleeping in the garden tonight.

i have a hammock and they have their beds out.

Gosh, the aggrieved are dropping by in numbers these last few days, maybe we should start a tourist tax?

New polling by More in Common and Burnham definitely remains an unknown quantity for almost half of the voting population. Interesting figures to start with and it will be interesting to see how he's viewed as the months go by.

Meanwhile, Starmer remains as toxic as ever with the public.

Good luck. I was hit by a kamikaze mosquito noise last night and just moved rooms instead. It was so blinking loud.

Upstartled · 25/06/2026 21:26

I think we have been spared the worst of it. We topped out at 28c and had a decent breeze with it. I have my fingers crossed for a thunderstorm tomorrow though, I love a bit of exciting weather.

Sounds lovely. I'm too hot to care about Labour's shenanigans too.
Our dc had one of those above ground pools when they were younger. DC are older now so we haven't put it up for a few years. Luckily I decided to put it up last week in preparation for the next heat wave. I did a full cannonball into it when I got home from work. 😂

Oh no, poor you. Its 25 indoors here atm. Go for it with the aircon if you can afford it. We had a quote for £9K just for the bedrooms. 😬 I think I'll stick with my trusty old portable aircon for now.

That sounds refreshing! I'm more of a wimp slow submerging kinda toe-dipper.

Me too usually, but I was desperate today after sitting in a airfryer portakabin for 10 hours. Unfortunately the dogs thought it looked fun and jumped in after me. 😂
its just big and deep enough for a lilo so thats where I've been all evening.

I've got 29 with running the Aircon unit

So it's maybe 31 indoors

I sat out in the garden for a couple of hours. I would sleep there but sleeping in the communal garden doesn't seem like a great idea 😂 there isn't a space big enough to spread out and sleep there anyway!

so quite confused at the moment
I guess if no one's doing politics this evening, then no one will know

Lindsey Hoyle apparently got quite cross today because the government are planning to announce another 12 asylum seeker centres

I thought that announcement was coming tonight, but it clearly hasn't so it must be tomorrow?

One in Essex has been asked to take more

If they open up one in My area that would be my second experience. I'm actually quite worried that they'll house some of them in my block of flats. That's more likely as part of the dispersal thing.

😁 Dogs/ lilos/ cannonballs, you're just a decade too late and one mishap away from £250 on you've been framed!

God no, don't sleep in a communal garden. Dodgy 😂

I haven't heard anything about Hoyle and the new centres, but I haven't bothered with the news today so may have missed it. If I see anything, I'll post a link. As you say, maybe tomorrow. Hoyle is always bollocking the govt, nothing changes though.
