A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I think the feeling in many quarters is even an improved DIP is really designed for public consumption - "highest spending since XXX" or whatever...

Without a radical change in the way the Treasury allocates cash to allow a big uplift in defence spending PDQ (and along with that a route and branch reform of defence procurement) it's all window dressing.

Good point.
What do you think of what’s being scrapped? The frigates and destroyers that is

TBH not sure..

I think the starter for ten is what is the future role of the Royal Navy's surface fleet?

I had no idea, this isn’t being widely reported. Very scary.

This is why X is ESSENTIAL reading - and thanks to Elon Musk for buying it so that things are reported that you would never know b off you only got news reported by the British Biased Corporation.

Currently the public reaction to horrific crimes is the issue rather than what to do about the actual crime.

I’m guessing it’s because politicians are at a loss on what to do and prefer the public not to realise that.

DancingFerret · 28/06/2026 11:55

This is a direct attack on our freedom. (Hugh Grant is clearly still smarting from media coverage of his indiscretions in the US.)

Labour considers new war on journalism and social media

@DancingFerret I must've missed something

I think the way they treat public figures is dreadful. As Sienna Miller said, normally if you see a 20 or 40 group of men chasing a woman down the street, it would be a cause for alarm. Put cameras in their hands and it's suddenly legal.

I wasn't aware that Leveson 2 was looking to curb the freedom of X or YouTube to have any content in particular? Though I have privacy concerns everywhere.

One of the main things that came out about the enquiry was that an awful lot of stuff was illegal, but the mechanism for pressing charges isn't good enough.

I don't think anybody should be hacking into voicemails. I also thought Hugh Grant was very clear that his own incident wasn't really an issue because arrests and so on are a matter of public record. But I don't think it's right for journalists to be camped outside your house reporting your every move.

David Miliband 'optimistic' about a potential Burnham government - BBC News https://share.google/tYDlD1m9sVxCrZTON

Of course he's optimistic. He wants to be foreign secretary via the Lords.
He's better than his brother I suppose.

I wonder how the two Milibands will be like as team, if they both get cabinet posts.

Nuthatch26 · 28/06/2026 19:58

Yes, will be interesting to see the dynamic.

Poor Ed. 😂
Bet he's looking forward to the return of his far superior brother who couldn't be arsed doing the hard yards in opposition. Back to steal the limelight again 😂

I read somewhere that they have made up.

I hope they have, but the cabinet is a very high pressure environment? And it can put a strain on any relationship.

Yes, and a sniff of power could change all that. We'll be needing more popcorn. 😁

Easy to make up when you're not working together and the better one has gone off elsewhere. Maybe not so easy to maintain that when back in close quarters.

I think we're more likely to see issues from Ed than David though. David seems more dignified!

True. Being separated by an ocean usually helps, but things could change quickly.
Kemi will have a field day.

Nooo, hope not.

I don’t want Ed to get upset because he might ban hairdryers and ice cream makers.

I might have more sympathy for celebrities if they didn’t massage their images, lie to the press and try to suppress unflattering revelations. If they want publicity, fans and paying customers they can take the rough with the smooth.

Politicians - of all parties - should suck it up. They chase office and power. It’s right that the media look into them closely and comment on them freely.

None of that is to condone law-breaking.
