A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

In her account of the incident, the wife stated the warship had sounded its horn five times. My take on that is whoever was on the bridge was concerned about a possible collision. (Five blasts from a ship's horn would make most sailors sit up and take notice.)

(Going back briefly to the number of degrees to alter course, two is ridiculous and meaningless. We work on 60 degrees to make sure the other vessel can see we've changed course.)

She then went on to state they were under sail and therefore had right of way under maritime law. This is a common misconception. There are situations when power must take precedence, especially in relation to large vessels. The wife seems to have a limited grasp of the COLREGS and doesn't seem to understand maritime law.

Unfortunately for this couple, they've become the subject of quite a few cartoons doing the rounds.

So the Russian ship was drifting, and the yacht was under sail, and the couple thought they had priority? Have I got that right? They were playing chicken with a Russian warship?
I think I read that there was a second round of blasting the horn 5 times before shots were fired. I can imagine that would be quite loud!

I despair at some of the sailors in our marina. Deep pockets and scant knowledge. We've towed in our share over the years.

Yes, we have quite a few of those down here; spend a hefty six figures on sail or power and think a basic Day Skipper's course is beneath their intellectual abilities. It's irresponsible at best and dangerous at worst.

Starmer is digging in! Ffs read the room.

Sir Keir Starmer has amassed a six-figure war chest to fund his campaign to see off a leadership challenge.
The Times has been told that the prime minister has secured the support of a group of private donors ahead of a potential contest — as his critics suggested he was unlikely to raise adequate sums to mount a serious defence.

And Lord Alli has been campaigning in Makerfield for Burnham.

The PM is said to have the support of a group of private donors before a potential leadership contest if the mayor of Greater Manchester wins in Makerfield

I'm not sure exactly what the warship was doing, and quite honestly if he'd sounded five blasts I would be taking avoiding action PDQ, not arguing the toss.

There have been tragic instances where a ship, for whatever reason, hasn't seen a small vessel and a collision has occurred, but in this case it's pretty obvious the warship was attempting to get the yacht to change course. This couple were being stubborn and pig-headed (much like motorists who stay in "their" lane and refuse to move over, regardless of the consequences, for someone who's inadvertently or carelessly drifted into their path).

If I recall correctly, the wife said yachts under sail can't turn round quickly; thousands of yachtsmen and women would tell her they absolutely can - unless they're stately galleons à la Joyce Grenfell.🙄

We'd have tacked damn fast. They were absolute plonkers or three sheets to the wind.

I think it was someone from the govt saying the Russian ship was drifting so couldn't move quickly. Anyway, thanks for explaining it.

That's it. Polls are closed. And now we wait while Andy plays Schroedinger's PM.

DancingFerret · 18/06/2026 22:08

I wonder what fresh hell we'll be waking up to tomorrow?

Nuthatch26 · 18/06/2026 22:35

Looks like turnout is high, 60-65% being suggested.
Can't find anything on Aberdeen yet.

Wales had a very high turnout. Feelings were running high in the principality.

What are the thoughts on a high turnout? Who's likely to benefit most do we think?

What turnout did the constituency get in the last GE?

NoWordForFluffy · 18/06/2026 22:41

Googled it: 52.5% turnout in 24.

Ooh, just heard this on newsnight, apparently at this 60-65 range it is good for Burnham and if it is higher or lower it is good for reform.

Right. I'm off. Till tomorrow.

It's not worrying in Makerfield, apparently. The Greens weren't expected to poll well.

Good morning 😁

A decisive win for Burnham in Makerfield.

Conservatives win Aberdeen South. 😁😁😁

Arbroath and Brought Ferry won by the SNP. Labour came fourth in both by elections.

Yes it wasn't a seat the Greens could win. They will probably do well in the mayoral election though.

Good result for Burnham there. And so it begins...Starmer will have to congratulate him in public today while already campaigning in in the background to put Andy in the corner. We might see even more robotic tones, so brace for that.

Interesting to see that the Restore/ Reform vote wouldn't have been enough on aggregate to have won the seat, so there won't be the fireworks that could have followed.

Meanwhile, in Aberdeen South, I see the Tories did remarkably well and the SNP were left for dust. A 26 point swing!
